DENVER, CO - MAY 19: "u201cFun guy"u201d with harvested Mazatec psilocybin mushrooms from their growing tubs May 19, 2019 in Denver, Colorado. Bills that would decriminalize possession have been introduced in 19 states — including Missouri, Iowa and Kansas — though none have been enacted. And more than a dozen states — including Florida, Oklahoma and Texas — have introduced legislation to further study the health benefits of psilocybin. Some opponents of the Colorado measure say it would promote using these substances before the FDA says they are safe. "I'm hoping the rest of the country can learn the hard lessons from my state's foray," said Luke Niforatos, who leads two national organizations that opposed the drug legalization measure.
Jim had been calling on Meta and other tech companies for months to recognize the severity of the global macro headwinds and to reduce their costs. As a knock-on effect, this capex reduction from Meta may be causing some of the pressure we're seeing in semiconductor stocks, an area that caught a bid following Meta's initial expense guide. Reduction of annual capex by at least $5 billion; instead management guided for a $2 billion 2023 capex reduction at the high-end of its previous range, as mentioned this in more detail earlier. Qualcomm’s Longer Life With Apple Comes at a Cost
  + stars: | 2022-11-03 | by ( Dan Gallagher | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The company Wednesday became the latest chip maker to see its numbers hit by a rapidly weakening smartphone market. Qualcomm will be keeping Apple ’s lucrative iPhone business a while longer—for better and for worse. Qualcomm told investors during its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call late Wednesday that it expects its modem chip to have the “vast majority” of Apple’s iPhone business for the next crop of devices expected to launch in the fall of 2023. That is a shift from the company’s previously stated assumption of 20% share, but the news wasn’t a big surprise. An influential Apple supply-chain analyst reported back in June that Apple’s efforts to develop its own modem had hit a snag and were unlikely to be ready for the 2023 iPhones.
Qualcomm (QCOM) CEO Cristiano Amon said Thursday the chipmaker is prioritizing cutting down costs, one day after announcing a hiring freeze. On the cost side, Amon said the company is proactively "reducing expenses in mature businesses, adding that the company is "prepared to do more if the situation [deteriorates]." Shares of chipmaker Qualcomm fell more than 8% Thursday, a day after the company reported weak first-quarter guidance and said it started a hiring freeze in the current quarter. But the company called for fiscal first-quarter adjusted earnings of $2.25 to $2.45 per share on $9.2 billion to $10 billion in revenue. Analysts polled by Refinitiv had expected earnings per share of $3.42 and revenue of $12.02 billion. CEO Cristiano Amon stressed on the company's earnings call that the company is looking at a "temporary cyclical inventory drawdown." Piper Sandler analysts maintained an overweight rating but cut their price target from $185 to $145, saying they "see the drawdowns as limited to the December and March quarters."
Short-term inventory "reset," meaning there's a chip glut that must be dealt with before the price-to-earnings multiple can be determined. Wall Street was looking for fiscal first-quarter (current quarter) revenue of $12 billion, but company guide was $9.2 billion to $10 billion. ‘Black Adam’ Review: Rock Bottom
  + stars: | 2022-10-21 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
There are superhero movies about the War on Terror, the implacability of evil and the unintended consequences that might ensue if gods were among us. Then there are superhero movies about how cool it might look to shoot lightning out your fingertips. Like “Aquaman” and “Shazam!,” “Black Adam” feels like its script was dreamed up during seventh-grade recess. Adrianna is being pursued by the thugs ruling Kahndaq, so Teth Adam helpfully smites her enemies via such digitally colorful actions as roasting attackers with fingertip-fired electricity and smashing helicopters together while flying. Teth Adam, or Black Adam, as he will come to be known in a nod to both his dyspeptic personality and his skin-tight superhero garb, has much the same powers as Superman, but tied to attitude instead of innocence.

The protests that have erupted across Iran in the past two weeks are rooted in anger at the country’s morality police, an unpopular vestige of the 1979 revolution that represents a weak point for the government, according to protesters and human-rights advocates. The death of Mahsa Amini , 22, on Sept. 16, while in the custody of the morality police has touched a nerve among many Iranian families, who have had their own humiliating experiences with officers tasked with enforcing the country’s strict Islamic codes for clothing and behavior. Among those protesting are conservative women and men, joining throngs of young secular people who say the enforcement of rules around hijab, or headscarves, for women is often capricious.
The company estimated $1.3 billion in auto revenue for the fiscal year ended Sunday, up 33% from the prior year. Ninety percent of Qualcomm’s auto-related revenue forecast through 2026 is based on existing design wins from across the business line, Mr. Palkhiwala said. “It’s a business that’s important to us,” Mr. Palkhiwala said about the auto-chips division. Like Qualcomm, chip companies such as Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp. are wading deeper into the auto market. Nvidia reported $566 million in revenue for its auto business in the year ended in January, up 5.6% from the prior-year period.
The estimated figure stems from Qualcomm's deals with auto companies that it expects to translate into sales in future years. Its booming auto pipeline and additional tie-ups with vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) offer more evidence that the industry is embracing its automotive platform. More Club thoughts Thursday's auto event has been circled on our calendars because it goes to the heart of our investment thesis in the company: revenue diversification. Nonetheless, the market has not been kind to Qualcomm's stock price this year, sending it down by more than 30%, as investors jumped ship over fears of a smartphone slowdown and higher interest rates. Qualcomm's stock closed down 0.75% on Thursday, at $123.68 a share.
Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, has been weighing up various options for chipmaker Arm after Nvidia walked away from buying the company. There were no further details provided by SoftBank on what a strategic alliance would entail, but it could mark a big shift in strategy for Son and his vision for Arm. I'd like to talk with Samsung about a strategic alliance with Arm," Son said in a statement. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said he is seeking a "strategic alliance" between chipmaker Arm, which is owned by the Japanese giant, and South Korean tech conglomerate Samsung . Since then, SoftBank tried to sell arm to chipmaker Nvidia but the deal fell through in February.
