Chesnot | Getty ImagesLONDON — E-commerce giant Amazon's multibillion-dollar investment in the U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is formally being investigated by a U.K. competition regulator. As part of the deal Amazon will make Anthropic's powerful large language models available on its Bedrock platform for building generative AI applications. "By investing in Anthropic, Amazon, along with other companies, is helping Anthropic expand choice and competition in this important technology. Amazon's spokesperson added that the company will continue to make Anthropic's models available to customers via Bedrock. "We welcome the opportunity to cooperate with the CMA and provide them with a comprehensive understanding of Amazon's investment and our commercial collaboration."

Anything above 4% indicates the market is overbought, anything below a minus 5% means the market is oversold.) I am just prematurely predicting other investors fleeing the stock because they think Warren knows more than them. Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. We are right smack in a most perilous moment because the Fed doesn't want to move too fast but the stock market does and the Fed does not care about that. I don't think a presidential election is all that conducive to the market.

However, after EzDubs went through the Y Combinator startup program last year, the company made a quick pivot, adding Microsoft's cloud into the mix. That's because EzDubs' founders learned of a partnership that enabled Y Combinator companies to receive $350,000 worth of credits on Microsoft Azure. The current offer includes $350,000 in AWS credits, plus $300,000 reserved for tapping the custom silicon, the spokesperson said. A spokesperson later said 58% of Y Combinator startups had taken up Microsoft's credit offer, a figure that doesn't reflect actual Azure usage. "The most powerful part of the AI story thus far is the chief technology officer, chief information officer," Griffin said at the Milken Global Institute. At the most profitable hedge fund of all time, that person is Umesh Subramanian, Citadel's chief technology officer. Read previewAmazon's recent decision to stop accepting new users for several cloud services caught some customers, partners and even a few employees by surprise. No new customers, no new featuresFor a business as important as AWS, deprioritizing services is a tricky balancing act. However, at the scale of AWS, this still means that thousands of developers and other customers likely still rely on these cloud tools. "We will continue to support our customers, whether they continue to use these services, or they migrate to other AWS offerings or alternative third-party solutions." Consider Amazon Q, Amazon Connect, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Marketplace, Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon SageMaker, Amazon QuickSight, and many other offerings that have had significant success with customers," he wrote in an email.

Dominion Energy is exploring the possibility of connecting a data center directly to a nuclear plant in Connecticut, as the tech sector hunts for carbon-free electricity to power artificial intelligence applications. "We're certainly open to the idea of a co-located data center," Dominion CEO Robert Blue told analysts on the company's second-quarter earnings call Thursday when asked about Millstone. The utility, headquartered in Richmond, serves northern Virginia, the world's largest data center market. Dominion has connected nine new data centers so far this year with plans for a total of 15 by the end 2024. Amazon Web Services bought a data center powered by a Talen Energy nuclear plant in Pennsylvania for $650 million in March.

Amazon said Thursday that revenue in its cloud division increased 19% in the second quarter, beating analysts' estimates. The company reported revenue for Amazon Web Services of $26.28 billion. While AWS continues to lead the cloud infrastructure market, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud have been gaining momentum, due in part to early deployments of AI models. On Tuesday, Microsoft said revenue from Azure and other cloud services jumped 29% in the quarter, and last week Google said its cloud revenue, including cloud infrastructure and Workspace productivity subscriptions, also rose 29%. Companies have started consuming cloud services to deploy generative AI models that power technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.

Critically, sales of Amazon’s cloud computing services continued to gain steam, growing 19 percent to $26.3 billion. Amazon Web Services has also become more profitable, with an operating margin of 35.5 percent, up from 24.2 percent a year earlier. It spent $16 billion on capital expenditures, including new data centers, expensive computer chips and warehouses to fulfill orders. While Amazon has become more profitable, it is having a harder time spending that cash. As a result, the company’s cash has grown to record levels, with $71.7 billion on its balance sheet at the end of the quarter.

With AWS humming and management identifying more ways to lower its cost to serve, Amazon's profitability story is still intact. Olsavsky said the profitability of North America stores improved quarter over quarter, driven by further improvements in its cost to serve. The company expects net sales of $154 billion to $158.5 billion, an increase of 8% to 11% year over year. The high end of guidance captures the consensus of $158.2 billion, but it's a miss on the analysts' consensus of $156.25 billion. Microsoft shares dipped on Wednesday as investors looked past better-than-expected earnings and revenue and focused instead on disappointing cloud results. But executives provided a dose of optimism when they predicted a cloud growth speed-up in the first half of 2025. Of the 29% growth for Azure and other cloud services, 8 percentage points came from AI services, Microsoft said. But demand for Azure AI services remained higher than available capacity, said Amy Hood, Microsoft's finance chief. She said Azure growth in June was slightly lower than expected across some parts of Europe.

That will be the case in this jam-packed week , with the earnings from Microsoft on Tuesday, Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon on Thursday. If Alphabet said it cut back on data-center spending, then it would be alleged the company is falling behind Amazon and Microsoft in the AI race. The company also is now dogged by another competitor in search engines after ChatGPT creator OpenAI announced a prototype of SearchGPT . Apple reports on Thursday, and if you think the cloud-computing heavyweights are spending on too much AI, then you should be buying Apple. President Joe Biden always chose to have his agencies wear down tech companies.

While working there, I never felt indifferent toward the company; I either loved or hated it. Amazon felt like an engineer-driven company because technical engineers had control over entire projects versus being assigned small tasks by non-technical managers. As a senior engineer, I ran a training on "customer obsession," one of the main "leadership principles" that define Amazon employees. Because there are so many principles, managers could use them in contradictory ways. Amazon on-call shifts were frustrating and exhaustingAt Amazon, most of our product decisions were based on customers.
