A possible meteor caught on video that “looks like a flaming basketball” falling from the sky may have been responsible for destroying a Northern California man’s home last week. Authorities are now investigating whether it was possibly a meteor that fell from the sky onto Porcita's home. "I can say that during the incident many people approached the fire department to say they saw a potential meteor fall in that area. The debris "hits the Earth’s atmosphere at 65,000 mph and burns up" creating what the agency calls the Taurid meteor shower. When shown a video of the possible meteorite that had fallen in the area, Porcita said it looked like a "flaming basketball."
Florida's east coast was placed under hurricane watch Monday as Subtropical Storm Nicole moved in its direction with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm, currently 520 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas, is expected to approach Florida's east coast by Wednesday night. A hurricane watch has been issued for Florida's east coast along Volusia and Brevard counties all the way south to Hallandale Beach near Miami, according to the National Hurricane Center. There's a storm surge watch for the east coast of Georgia and Florida from the Altamaha Sound to Hallandale Beach. A tropical storm watch for the northwestern Bahamas was upgraded to a hurricane watch Monday.

At least nine people are injured in Philadelphia, four critically, after multiple shooters started firing at a crowd Saturday night, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood when multiple people got out of a vehicle and opened fire at a group of people. The shooting happened outside a bar in the northern Philadelphia neighborhood, NBC Philadelphia reports. There are at least 40 pieces of ballistic evidence on the scene, NBC Philadelphia reports. A motive is not known as of Sunday, but police say it seems like the shooters saw someone they were after and started firing, according to NBC Philadelphia.
At least 38 people have been injured in a fire at a New York City high-rise apartment building in Midtown, according to the FDNY. Of the 38 injured, two people are in critical condition and five, who are EMS members, have serious injuries. The cause of the fire was determined to be a lithium ion battery connected to a micromobility device. "The lithium ion battery adds a different degree, when we talk about the fire dynamics of it," FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb said at the briefing. Chief Fire Marshall Daniel Flynn says this is almost the 200th fire caused by a lithium ion battery from a micromobility device just this year in the city.

A New York City fugitive who had been on the run for almost a year was vacationing at Disney World's Animal Kingdom Theme Park when he was spotted by an officer who recognized him, according to court documents. Jeff Andre, a federal officer with the United States Postal Inspection Service, was on vacation Oct. 20 at the Florida theme park when he happened to spot Quashon Burton. Officers approached Burton after he left the Orlando area theme park, where he gave them a false name and resisted arrest. "Perhaps the most concerning factor here is the defendant’s persistent use of false identities and his demonstrated ability to evade law enforcement," wrote United States Attorney Damian Williams. Burton will remain in custody pending trial in the Southern District of New York, according to an order from United States District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.

Powell's "Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously," released in 2005 and based on a series of her blog posts, was a bestselling hit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday issued a health advisory about waterborne bacteria in dental plumbing systems after children who visited pediatric dental clinics were infected with nontuberculous Mycobacteria. The cluster of suspected NTM infections identified in March arose among patients of the same pediatric dental facility. The year before, 24 children got NTM infections after receiving dental care from a clinic in Georgia. "Dental providers should consult with the dental equipment manufacturer for appropriate methods and equipment to both maintain and monitor the quality of dental water," the CDC said. If left untreated, dental water can also breed other bacteria, including Legionella.

A Tennessee grandfather fell to his death during a skydiving accident at a high school football game Friday evening as startled onlookers watched, according to officials. The victim was airlifted from the David Crockett High School football stadium to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. A New York City man was arrested on Friday after allegedly fatally stabbing a man who confronted him for his bad manners, according to police. On Sept. 20 at around 11:30p.m., Joan Nunez, 37, opened the door of a smoke shop in Gowanus, Brooklyn for Edwin Pedroza, 42. When Pedroza walked in without saying thank you, Nunez confronted him, which led to a verbal dispute, according to policeVideo shared by the NYPD appears to show Nunez, in white, and Pedroza engaging in a physical dispute inside the smoke shop. The pair left the shop as the fighting escalated, where Pedroza allegedly displayed a knife and stabbed Nunez in the abdomen and neck. Pedroza was arrested Friday morning in Brooklyn and charged with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
Passengers onboard United Airlines flight 2038 were in for a slithering surprise when they found a snake on their plane Monday. Unlike in the 2006 cult film "Snakes on a Plane" starring Samuel L. Jackson, however, this lone garter snake was not venomous. The airline did not clarify at what point the snake was discovered or how it got on the plane. No injuries were reported, and there was no impact to airport operations, the authority said. In 2016, passengers on Aeromexico flight 23 were joined by a snake hanging right above their seats.
Police in New York City are looking for three suspects who were caught on video swiping over $500,000 worth of high-end jewelry from a store in Manhattan Saturday morning. Video posted by the New York City Police Department shows the suspects break into Cellini Jewelers using a sledgehammer at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Shattered glass can be seen in the entryway of the jewelry store as they make their way in. Once inside, the suspects broke jewelry displays and stuffed the high-end goods into bags before running off. Police continue to look for the suspects and are offering a $3,500 reward to anyone who has information about the incident.
A cold blast could bring record freezing temperatures to more than 60 million people across the country this week. Freeze watches and warnings are in effect as far west as Colorado, into the Northeast and south to Florida, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures of 35 degrees and colder are expected to affect all but a handful of states throughout the week. "This may be the first freeze of the season for many places across the Central Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley and Ohio/Tennessee Valleys which will impact sensitive crops/livestock," according to the National Weather Service. This cold front could break more than 50 record lows by the end of the week, with temperatures as low as 24 degrees in Minneapolis, 27 in St. Louis and 57 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Starlink will continue to fund the satellite network providing battlefield communications for the Ukrainian military during the war with Russia, according to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. "The hell with it … even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we’ll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free," Musk tweeted on Saturday. This comes after Musk asked the U.S. Defense Department to take over funding the Starlink satellite network on Friday, a U.S. official told NBC News. Musk’s Starlink is a low-orbit satellite constellation operated by SpaceX that provides internet service and has been crucial in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February. An Indiana Catholic school teacher was arrested on Thursday after officials said they found she kept a "kill list" and threatened her students, according to NBC Chicago. Carrasquillo-Torres also told the students about the "kill list," adding that they were at the bottom of the list. Carrasquillo-Torres was escorted to the principal’s office following the student’s report, in which the teacher admitted to making the statements to the student and having a kill list. She did not provide the list to the principal, but did name a specific student on the list, NBC Chicago reported. East Chicago police arrested Carrasquillo-Torres Thursday morning at her home after an emergency detention order was approved, according to NBC Chicago.
A South Carolina man is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting three of his family members, including an Atlantic Beach councilman, according to the Horry County Police Department. The victim was identified by the Horry County Coroner's Office as 52-year-old Natasha Stevens, police said. Town of Atlantic BeachJames Dewitt II is listed as a councilman for the town of Atlantic Beach on their website. Also known as the "Black Pearl," Atlantic Beach is a historically Black community located just north of Myrtle Beach.
