The vote will be the culmination of months of examination by House Republicans as they've aimed to make immigration and border security a key election issue. The House vote on the charges, which Democrats say are untrue and hardly grounds for impeachment, is set for Tuesday. “Very clearly Secretary Mayorkas has picked and chosen which laws he's going to enforce,” said Rep. But I’d argue that as House Republicans move forward with a floor vote to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, they are poised to drag the chamber down an even more tortured — and potentially damaging — path. Yes, the Biden impeachment folly is built on a steaming pile of unsubstantiated charges and fever dreams sprung from the House’s conspiracy caucus. Steve Daines, who leads the Senate GOP's campaign arm, is lined up against the bipartisan deal. "This bill unites Senate Democrats and sharply divides Senate Republicans," Lee said in another post. Since then, a group of Senate Republicans has continued to be vocal about the difficulties of having a GOP leader who has an at best icy relationship with Trump. As of this writing, there's a chance a majority of Senate Republicans will stand against their leader.

The crush of asylum seekers crossing the southern border has overwhelmed the government’s capacity to deal justly with their claims. But Donald Trump, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, insists that Republicans reject the legislation taking shape in the Senate. Several Senate Republicans have said Mr. Trump is blocking it to keep immigration alive as a campaign issue. Senator Todd Young of Indiana called this move to derail the negotiations “tragic.” Mr. Young and the other Senate Republicans nevertheless continue to work with their Democratic colleagues to hammer out a compromise. House Republicans, however, don’t seem interested in writing laws; they have instead submitted to Mr. Trump’s demands.
