Players who receive two yellow cards before the quarter-finals will be suspended for the team's next match in the tournament. "I have five players who have yellow cards, so we need to be really smart," said Abadia, who was suspended for Colombia's first two games. When we need them, they will do what they need to do and we've seen it in different matches. Colombia need only a draw to advance as group toppers but Abadia said they would step on to the pitch seeking all three points. "We're always very careful in terms of players' health.

It's very positive for us and for women's football in our country," Colombia's Leicy Santos told reporters. "People come to me and say that it's a party in our matches that you can't see anywhere else. Morocco may be their easiest opponents on paper but Colombia coach Nelson Abadia warned his squad to exercise caution with five players at risk of suspension and missing their next game if they are booked. Colombia also received criticism for their physicality against Germany but Santos said that has only encouraged them to reinforce their playing style. "They don't press very often but... Colin is a fantastic coach and he might surprise us," Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said.

CNN —World Cup tournaments tend to be defined by an emerging star and, this year, it’s Colombia’s 18-year-old sensation Linda Caicedo who is shining brightest. It was in that game, early in the second half, that she produced one of the moments of the World Cup so far. “I wanted to shoot and thank God the ball went in,” Caicedo told FIFA after the game. “I’m still developing,” Caicedo told FIFA+ before the World Cup began. Now, sparing an unlikely swing of goal difference, Colombia will qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.

The only plus for Vietnam is that not many people are inside the Dunedin Stadium to watch it get thrashed by the Netherlands. There are a lot of empty seats around, but small pockets of Vietnamese fans are still trying to enjoy the experience. The clash was always going to be less glamorous than the other match between the USWNT and Portugal today, but it's no less important in terms of the tournament. The Dutch needed a big win to put pressure on the US and the Oranje is currently heading into the last 16 as group winner.

Alessia Russo gave the European champions the perfect start with a goal in the fourth minute and Lauren Hemp and James added two more to give England a comfortable lead at the break at Hindmarsh Stadium. Without the injured Keira Walsh as the holding midfielder, England shifted to a 3-5-2 formation and caused havoc for China with balls into the box from the flanks. "The team showed that they're really adaptable ... that we can change shape very easily, that's what we showed tonight." It was a record World Cup defeat for Asian champions and 1995 semi-finalists China, who exit in the group stage for the first time in eight appearances at the global showpiece. "It's very unfortunate that we had this terrible loss," said China coach Shui Qingxia.

China has been a key ally and crucial trade partner to Russia during the war in Ukraine. Cold War historian Sergey Radchenko argued in a New York Times op-ed that it's unwise for Putin to rely on China. Radchenko said history shows China will flip on allies as needed if it's to their benefit. Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have boasted about their "no limits" friendship, driven in part by a desire to curb US power. Some have argued that, at least for now, China may need Russia too.

Aspartame is one of the world's most popular sweeteners, used in products from Coca-Cola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum. In its first declaration on the additive, announced early on Friday, the Lyon-based International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said aspartame was a "possible carcinogen". Several scientists not associated with the reviews said the evidence linking aspartame to cancer is weak. There was also some limited evidence that aspartame has some chemical properties that are linked to cancer, the IARC said. Scientists with no links to the WHO reviews said the evidence that aspartame caused cancer was weak.

But they are worlds apart on proposals to lace the foothills they love with up to 71 miles of mountain bike and hiking trails. That put the neighbors on the frontline of a culture war raging across the West as multi-generational families, conservationists and sometimes conservatives fight trail systems sought by incomers and recreationist locals. Two bike trail projects have been nixed in as many months on public land in Oregon and Colorado. Across the United States, Americans are moving to places with trees and trails, many working remotely.

China's Xi Jinping has formed close ties with Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia. But the Wagner rebellion exposed that Putin's authority is shakier than Xi realised, an analyst told Insider. If Russia loses against Ukraine, Xi would face global humiliation. If there are further signs Putin's grip on power is weakening, and chaos could engulf Russia, Xi faces a tough choice. "It's unlikely that Xi will go out of his way to support Putin's regime if that entails significant risks to China itself.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Louisiana congressional map to be redrawn to add another majority-Black district. The appeals court expedited a fuller review of the case, but those proceedings were frozen last summer once the Louisiana officials successfully sought intervention from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court in late June of last year, took up the case but put it on pause while it decided the challenge to the Alabama map. The state’s opponents countered that the district court in the Louisiana case had decided that the 5-1 map likely violated the Voting Rights Act under the same exact legal test the Supreme Court sanctioned in its Alabama ruling. “Black voters in Louisiana have suffered one election under a congressional map that unlawfully dilutes their political influence.

Scientists Debut Lab Models of Human Embryos
  + stars: | 2023-06-24 | by ( Carl Zimmer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In its first week, a fertilized human egg develops into a hollow ball of 200 cells and then implants itself on the wall of the uterus. Over the next three weeks, it divides into the distinct tissues of a human body. And those crucial few weeks remain, for the most part, a black box. Dr. Hanna and a number of other biologists are trying to uncover those details by creating models of human embryos in the lab. They are coaxing stem cells to organize themselves into clumps that take on some of the crucial hallmarks of real embryos.

Palestinian gunmen kill four Israelis in West Bank

REUTERS/Ammar AwadNEAR ELI SETTLEMENT, West Bank, June 20 (Reuters) - Palestinian gunmen shot dead four Israelis near a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday in an attack the militant Hamas group said was a response to a raid by Israeli forces in the flashpoint city of Jenin. The Israeli military said it was boosting forces in the West Bank after the attack. Police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for a full-scale military operation in the West Bank and urged Jewish settlers in the area to carry a weapon. U.S.-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, aimed at establishing a state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, collapsed in 2014 and show no sign of revival. Israel's government is set on expanding settlements in the West Bank and includes members who rule out a Palestinian state.

BUCHAREST, June 13 (Reuters) - Romanian oil and gas group OMV Petrom (ROSNP.BX), majority-controlled by Austria's OMV (OMVV.VI), said on Tuesday it discovered new crude oil and natural gas deposits equal to about three quarters of its overall 2022 production. The deposits are the largest crude oil discovery OMV Petrom has made in decades, it said, and were found in southern Romania holding over 30 million barrerls of oil equivalent (boe) of recoverable resources. OMV Petrom has said it expected a decision around the middle of this year for the Neptun Deep gas project, estimated to cost around 4 billion euros ($4.32 billion). In May, Romanian lawmakers changed the law to enforce an additional tax on refined crude oil which applies to OMV Petrom. OMV Petrom shares were up 0.65% on the day on the Bucharest Stock Exchange by 1135 GMT.
