One more thing Southern California is known for: earthquakes. While the San Andreas is the most famous, scientists know it’s not the only fault that can produce a powerful earthquake in Southern California. Residents clean up in the Van Nuys neighborhood following the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles on January 17, 1994. Many newcomers have no idea the havoc a big earthquake can wreak, including young Angelinos who grew up in Southern California‘s quiet times. “We need to be prepared, because we could have an earthquake that’s pretty big at any time,” Husker said.

CNN —The question for prosecutors reexamining the murder convictions of Lyle and Erik Menendez is not whether they killed their parents, but how culpable they really are. Here’s a look at the timeline of the case over the decades, from the initial shooting to the recent efforts to alter their sentence. July 1993: The Menendez brothers go on trial in a Los Angeles courtroom, each with a separate jury, in a trial televised on Court TV. September 2024: Netflix releases the crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a nine-episode series co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan about the killings. “We may be talking later, but that certainly has increased the attention by the public, and that’s why we’re being public about where we are.”A hearing on the Menendez brothers’ petition is set for November 29.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said his office is also reviewing possible evidence included in petitions filed by the brothers last year alleging molestation by their father. Joseph “Lyle” Menendez, now 56, and Erik Menendez, now 53, were convicted in 1996 in the shotgun murders of their parents at their Beverly Hills homes seven years before. In their initial trials, the brothers said they had been sexually abused for years by their father. The district attorney's announcement came amid controversy over a new Netflix series about the case, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story." In a statement released by his wife, Erik Menendez said the series contained "blatant lies" and said it was "ruinous" for his brother.

Actor Cooper Koch, who plays Erik Menendez in the Netflix series, joined her. Erik Menendez, now 53, had earlier slammed the Netflix series’ dramatized portrayal of his and his brothers’ lives as “blatant lies” and accused the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, of purposefully creating a caricature of Lyle Menendez, now 56. Los Angeles (AP) — Prosecutors in Los Angeles are reviewing new evidence in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez to determine whether they should be serving life sentences for killing their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion more than 35 years ago, the city’s district attorney said Thursday. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said during a news conference that attorneys for Erik Menendez, 53, and his 56-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez, have asked a court to vacate their conviction. Gascón said there is no question the brothers committed the murders, but that his office will be reviewing new evidence and will make a decision on whether it warrants a resentencing. The new evidence presented in a petition includes a letter written by Erik Menendez that his attorneys say corroborates the allegations that he was sexually abused by his father. Cliff Gardner, an attorney for the brothers, said they are pleased by the district attorney’s decision.

Washington CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in a closely watched defamation trial pitting voting technology company Smartmatic against the right-wing cable network Newsmax, in a high-stakes case over the airing of false 2020 election claims. The Newsmax case revolves around the same false claims, championed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, that the 2020 election was rigged by Smartmatic software and others. The Florida-based company sued Newsmax and other right-wing outlets and figures in 2021, alleging that its reputation was destroyed by the lies.
