Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, has said that he believes women should not serve in combat and that he wants to see the military purged of “woke” officials who support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Neither Fox News nor Trump’s transition team immediately responded to requests for comment about Hegseth’s on-air remarks about the military. Hegseth was an Army National Guard infantry officer, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. “I’m straight up just saying that we should not have women in combat roles,” Hegseth said on the podcast. “Who?” Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said on Capitol Hill when he was asked Tuesday evening about Trump’s picking Hegseth.

When I moved to London with my husband just almost two years ago it was a major culture shock. Job hunting and finding friends was a challenge, but the free healthcare has been invaluable. The job hunt was a culture shock for meAs a New York-qualified attorney, I was used to a competitive job hunt involving dozens of applications, multiple interviews, and aggressive salary negotiations. But London's work-life balance has been a huge reliefI'm not burned out from work in London like I was in NYC. House Republicans’ razor-thin victory was propelled by Trump’s decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris in both the Electoral College and the popular vote. So far, Republicans have captured the 218 seats needed to secure the majority to Democrats’ 208 seats. Last week, Republicans flipped three Democratic Senate seats to win control of the upper chamber. They were among the 18 GOP House districts that President Joe Biden carried in 2020. Democratic challenger George Whitesides also ousted vulnerable GOP Rep. Mike Garcia in Southern California.

In this courtroom sketch, former U.S. president Donald Trump appears by video conferencing before Judge Juan Merchan during a hearing before his trial over charges that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, in Manhattan state court in New York City, May 23, 2023. A New York judge on Tuesday delayed by one week ruling on whether to toss guilty verdicts against President-elect Donald Trump in his criminal hush money case, or to move toward sentencing in late November. The postponement was announced two days after the Manhattan District Attorney's Office asked the judge for time to consider how Trump's electoral win affects the case. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who was set to issue his ruling Tuesday, is now scheduled to determine if the case should be dismissed on Nov. 19. Trump is currently set to be sentenced Nov. 26 on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

However, experts warn that what they call prolonged sitting on the toilet can harm your health. “When patients present to me with complaints, one of the main areas we have to delve deeply into is spending a lot of time on the toilet,” Xue said. The pelvic floor muscles are another type of muscle weakened from prolonged toilet sitting. “Make sitting on the toilet bowl as uninteresting as possible.”If you’re having trouble relieving yourself, Xue advised quitting after 10 minutes. Worsening constipation or a need to sit on the toilet for a long time may also be a sign of cancer.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a judge on Monday to set an earlier trial date in his federal corruption case next year, arguing the current date would impede Adams’ participation in his mayoral reelection campaign, according to court documents. In a letter to the court, Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, requested the trial to begin weeks earlier on April 1, rather than later that month. He added that the prosecution will “cast a cloud” over Adams’ campaign until it’s resolved by a New York jury at trial. Adams pledged to fight the charges and stay on as mayor. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a news conference in September.

It reignites a debate about the feasibility of developing increasingly advanced models and AI scaling laws — the theoretical rules about how the models improve. It remains to be seen how smart an AI model can get when it has that much capital thrown at it. There could also be strategies to make AI models smarter by enhancing the inference portion of development. The model OpenAI released in September — called OpenAI o1 — focused more on inference improvements. Still, it's clear that, like Altman, much of the industry remains firm in its conviction that scaling laws are the driver of AI performance.

For some who’ve run afoul of Trump, the election results have sparked fresh worries that he may enter office looking for retribution. During the campaign, Trump has made different statements about whether he might target people who’ve upset him. Rep. Jim Jordan, a staunch Trump ally in Congress, said he doesn’t expect any of the prosecutors to face reprisals over Trump investigations. One former Trump White House official who has publicly spoken against Trump described feeling “scared” and declined to let their name be used. Ties have been at their lowest point in decades amid disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan and Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. “We respect the choice of the American people,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement earlier. A second Trump presidency “could mark a new beginning in China-U.S. relations if the chance that has been offered is not wasted,” state-run newspaper China Daily said in an editorial on Wednesday. But Chinese officials laser-focused on stabilizing their faltering economy are also mindful of the tariffs of 60% or more that Trump has vowed to impose on all Chinese imports. "All the property must be turned over to the receiver and if not, I will hold him in contempt," the judge told Caruso, whose client was by turns angry, animated and frustrated during the proceeding. "The vast majority of physical property, we have no idea where it is," Nathan said at Thursday's hearing. Nathan alleged that Giuliani has opened secret bank accounts and created limited liability companies on the heels of the defamation verdict last year. Vice President Harris is expected to call President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the 2024 presidential race and is also expected to speak publicly, according to two Harris aides. NBC News called the presidential race Wednesday morning, projecting that Trump won just after 5:30 a.m. Harris, 60, launched her presidential campaign after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed her as the Democratic Party's nominee. While Harris had about three months to campaign, Trump launched his re-election campaign, his third for president, shortly after the 2022 midterm elections that November. Polls had shown in recent weeks that the race was dead even and Harris faced a gender gap in which more men, specifically white men, were backing Trump.

Hoax bomb threats targeting polling places and election offices briefly disrupted voting in five battleground states, with the FBI saying the threats in four of those states came from Russian email domains. “The FBI is aware of bomb threats to polling locations in several states, many of which appear to originate from Russian email domains,” the FBI said in a statement Tuesday night. German officials accused Russia of orchestrating bomb threats against several polling places in Moldova’s presidential elections last week. Threats to polling sites and election offices were reported across about a dozen Pennsylvania counties, where targeted polling sites were ordered to stay open late, officials said. “But I think the number of these bomb threats is, if not surprising, very concerning,” he added.

Why social media shouldn’t be your therapist

Her book “Over the Influence: Why Social Media Is Toxic for Women and Girls — And How We Can Take It Back” was recently published by Alcove Press. It’s easy to see why: There’s a shortage of mental health providers, and it’s often expensive and difficult to get an appointment, whereas social media is at everyone’s fingertips. But it’s generally not a good idea to try to diagnose your problems on social media. Misleading posts and misdiagnosesSelf-help posts on social media often serve up simple solutions to complex problems. That’s why experts said answers are likelier to be found on an old-fashioned therapist’s sofa than social media.
