Their incidences of cardiovascular disease –– including strokes, heart attacks and heart failures–– were collected from the national health registers through 2019, according to the study. Researchers looked at sugar consumption in three categories: sugary beverages, sweets like pastries, and toppings like honey or sugar added to tea or coffee, according to the study. “Different sources of added sugars also vary in their consumption patterns, which could further explain why they associate differently with cardiovascular disease risk,” Janzi added. Less sugar via less sodaThe study suggests that you don’t need to cut out all sugar to prevent cardiovascular disease, Janzi said. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day for women and 9 for men.

London CNN —The global airline industry will likely rake in more than $1 trillion in revenue next year, as passenger numbers look set to hit an all-time high of 5 billion, the International Air Transport Association said Tuesday. IATA also predicted that airlines’ average profit per passenger would increase to around $7 next year, up sharply from just $2.25 18 months ago. IATA expects airlines in Africa, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region to be less profitable than the industry average. Global conflicts are also driving costs higher because of the big stretches of airspace closed to commercial flights, Walsh said. The group, which acquired Hawaiian’s parent company in September, is targeting $1 billion in additional profit from the combined entity in 2027.

Here are 5 cities where the highest number of Gen Z renters are rent-burdened:While financial experts recommend limiting housing expenses to no more than 30% of income , this can be challenging in a number of cities where younger renters shoulder the heaviest load. Housing expenses in the analysis were not not limited to rent, Zillow Economist Kenny Lee tells CNBC Make It. In fact, nearly 6 out of 10 Gen Z renters (18- to 25-year-olds) are "rent-burdened," according to a recent Zillow analysis of U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data. This is common in this economy, says Lee, since many of the best-paying jobs for Gen Z are located in cities where the rent is most burdensome. Find a roommate"A lot of renters have been relying on finding roommates to split the cost of housing," says Lee.

Hong Kong CNN —Chinese leader Xi Jinping has warned the United States against restarting a trade war, saying there would be “no winners” even as he vowed to defend the country’s economic interests. “Tariff wars, trade wars, and technology wars go against the historical trend and economic laws, and there will be no winners,” Xi said according to state broadcaster CCTV. China has always believed that only when China is good can the world be good. “We doubt this marks an end to China’s recent export boom,” Zichun Huang of Capital Economics wrote in a research note. “It is likely that China would continue to improve trade relations through lower export tax rebate and clearer rules including government procurement,” Citi economists wrote on Monday.

AdvertisementSalesforce's CEO says the company isn't spending as lavishly on AI as some of its tech peers — and he isn't worried about falling behind. Instead, Marc Benioff says the company will capitalize on the vast AI spending gap between it and some of its competitors and avoid a "race to the bottom." Benioff said some of Salesforce's competitors were "excessive" with their AI spending and "it's becoming a race to the bottom for some of these companies." He also highlighted that some have invested in nuclear energy and nuclear power plants.

Authorities are questioning a man in central Pennsylvania in connection to the slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, law enforcement sources said Monday. The man in Altoona drew the attention of investigators, in part, because he was found with a gun similar to the one used in last Wednesday's deadly shooting, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. The person being questioned was at a McDonald’s, where customers thought he looked suspicious and called police, three law enforcement sources said. He was found to have a fake New Jersey ID, a gun similar to the one used to kill Thompson and a silencer, two senior law enforcement sources said. Optimism about household finances hit a multiyear high following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory in November, according to a New York Federal Reserve survey released Monday. The results follow Trump’s Nov. 5 victory that will send him back to the White House for a second nonconsecutive term. Even with the increase in sentiment, consumers’ inflation outlook is still cautious, according to the New York Fed Survey. Though Trump has made little mention of attacking the government’s debt and deficit load, the outlook there improved as well. The median expectation for growth in government debt was at 6.2%, down 2.3 percentage points from October and the lowest level since February 2020.

He did so as the rebels entered and seized Damascus, seemingly with little fightback from Assad’s government forces. Syria dominated international consciousness for almost a decade, its civil war erupting after Assad crushed peaceful protests during the region-wide 2011 Arab Spring. But until last month the conflict had been largely at a stalemate, after Assad’s forces regained control of much of the country. The conflict in Syria partly contributed to a wave of mass migration into Europe, met by a right-wing backlash across the continent that is still reverberating today. Much of this diaspora has also responded to Assad’s downfall with astonished glee, some rushing to return home.

WASHINGTON — Conservative justices objected as the Supreme Court on Monday sidestepped a new dispute over race in education by declining to consider whether an admissions program for public high schools in Boston unlawfully considered race. The court's refusal to hear the case marks the second time the court has declined to review a policy aimed at increasing diversity in public high schools since the high court ended the consideration of race in college admissions last year. The policy, implemented by the Boston School Committee in 2021, applied to three selective high schools in Boston: Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and John D. O’Bryant School. The Supreme Court in February turned away a similar challenge to an admissions policy at a Virginia high school that was also aimed at increasing diversity. In a statement, Gorsuch said that the fact the Boston schools' policy was no longer in effect was one reason not to hear the case.
