This month's market rotation into small caps is being led by a rebound in cheap stocks. According to FactSet, three of the top five small-cap exchange-traded funds in July are explicitly focused on value, including the iShares US Small Cap Value Factor ETF (SVAL) . That fund was up 11.4% for the month through Wednesday, compared to 7.4% for the broader iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) . Investors can account for profitability by looking for stocks with lower price-to-earnings ratios, one of the metrics captured by many value funds. Screening for value stocks can sometimes miss areas of trouble in the market.

For the first half of this year, technology stocks — especially those linked to the expected boom in artificial intelligence — propelled major indexes around the world higher. The tech sector has risen faster than any other sector and twice as quickly as all of them this year, except for communications companies, which include the likes of Amazon. Just a handful of stocks accounted for nearly two-thirds of the gains in the S&P 500 this year. Shares of businesses that could benefit from this growth — smaller companies, banks and real estate businesses — have all rallied in the past two weeks, while Big Tech has stumbled. It might not be a smooth transition — as trading on Wednesday, when stocks had their worst day since late 2022, showed.

New York CNN —A toxic mix of surging rental rates and vanishing support for renters has catapulted evictions above pre-pandemic levels in some major cities. Evictions have increased most significantly in Sun Belt cities where housing affordability has worsened and where renters often have fewer protections. Other cities, including Minneapolis (+44%) and Columbus, Ohio (+37%), are also experiencing higher levels of evictions than before the pandemic. Three-quarters of the 34 cities tracked by the Eviction Lab had evictions increase between 2022 and 2023. The vast majority of evictions are for issues related to nonpayment of rent, according to the Eviction Lab.

Small banks are feeling misunderstood. Investors worry that those banks could be a crisis waiting to happen. But executives at these firms — which number about 4,100 in total — say there is an important distinction, and some industry analysts concur. They caution that small banks are being lumped in with lenders to the owners of half-empty towers in Manhattan, San Francisco and Chicago, which are in the most trouble. Instead, a majority of commercial building loans by community banks are for smaller buildings — like those housing doctors and local businesses — that tend to be fully leased.

"We're seeing a slow shift from a seller's market to a buyer's market," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the Realtors. These inventory levels are the highest supply since May 2020, boosted by homes sitting on the market longer. Supply of homes for sale is weakest on the lower end, but is seeing a new surge now. While the sales price nationally is high, new listing prices are lower. Either home sales rise, or, if the prices do not rise, the prices would buckle down," Yun added.
