NEW YORK, June 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) is catapulting itself into the future - but paying yesterday’s high prices to get there. She pursued this one with gusto, though: Adenza wasn’t for sale when Nasdaq started wooing Thoma Bravo, say people familiar with the situation. Little wonder Nasdaq shares plunged over 10% on Monday. The U.S.-based exchange operator would pay just under $5.8 billion in cash and the rest in new Nasdaq shares, leaving Thoma Bravo with a 14.9% stake. Nasdaq shares had fallen 9.4% by 10.00am EST on June 12.

The American branch of Binance, the giant cryptocurrency exchange, said late on Thursday that it would no longer allow customers to trade on its platform using U.S. dollars, after its banking partners cut the firm off in response to a crackdown by federal regulators. The move is a major blow to Binance.US, the American arm of the world’s largest crypto exchange. Binance will no longer be able to offer that service in the United States. The announcement comes after the Securities and Exchange Commission sued Binance on Monday, accusing the firm and its chief executive, Changpeng Zhao, of mishandling customer funds and lying to regulators. asked a federal judge in Washington to freeze assets related to U.S.-based customers of Binance, citing “the defendants’ years of violative conduct.”

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - Other U.S. crypto exchanges are likely to be in the firing line after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week sued Coinbase and Binance, two of the world's largest crypto exchanges, for allegedly breaching its rules. Both Coinbase and Binance deny the SEC's allegations and have pledged to vigorously defend themselves in court. The Coinbase and Binance suits this week expand that list to include some commonly traded tokens, such as Solana, Cardano and Polygon. While big crypto companies can afford to fight the SEC, smaller companies have filed for bankruptcy following SEC enforcement actions, including crypto exchange Beaxy. "I think if there's a real value in these crypto tokens, then compliance will build trust and the business model might change," he said.

The Securities And Exchange Commission has filed lawsuits against cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Binance for allegedly violating multiple securities laws. Binance announced the change late Thursday night on Twitter, and blamed the Securities and Exchange Commission's "unjustified civil claims against our business." Binance's banking transactions are the center of immense scrutiny by the SEC, which filed a civil complaint against the exchange and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, alleging both violated U.S. securities laws. But it suggests that Binance's banking partners have decided the exchange is too risky a client to keep on, and that the revelations from the SEC case have grown too significant to ignore. Multiple banking partners had already stopped serving Binance, and it wasn't immediately clear which banking partners Binance retained.

Also, after falling earlier, Bitcoin , the world's biggest cryptocurrency, was up 1.4%. Coinbase had disclosed in March that it received a "Wells notice" from the SEC threatening a potential lawsuit over certain products.

It raised interest rates by a quarter-point on Tuesday to an 11-year high and warned further tightening may be required to ensure that inflation returns to target, boosting the Aussie dollar as markets had been leaning towards a pause. Eyes will now be trained on the Bank of Canada's latest policy decision on Wednesday, with many forecasting it will resume tightening interest rates after a four-month pause. The crypto world was far from calm, with Bitcoin trying to find its feet after a 5% recoil to three-month lows on Monday. NEW YORK, June 2 (Reuters) - Exchange operator Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) said on Friday it will let companies list across its U.S. and international exchanges, expanding in a fiercely competitive field dominated in the United States by the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc (NDAQ.O). Cboe, which has stock exchanges in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, currently lists only its own stock, along with exchange-traded funds, on its U.S. exchange. But financial software firm Abaxx Technologies Inc (ABXX.NLB), which is listed on Cboe Canada, has received conditional approval to be intralisted on Cboe U.S., the exchange operator said. "Cboe has built an expansive, global equities footprint unrivalled in the industry that uniquely positions us to deliver the first-ever truly global listing experience for issuers seeking to tap new markets beyond their home region," Dave Howson, global president of Cboe Global Markets, said in a statement. Exchanges earn recurring revenue from listings and charge various listing fees based on factors such as the amount of shares a company lists.

Since then, Japanese equities have rallied. Even so, Strategas Securities' Chris Verrone has remained optimistic on Japanese equities, saying this week that the rally is not yet overbought. Meanwhile, JPMorgan chief market strategist Marko Kolanovic said in a note, also on Tuesday, that the rally in Japan still has "staying power." For international investors, those remarks signaled that Japanese companies may be more transparent with shareholders in the future. Investors can also take a company-specific approach, according to Diamond Hill's Mohanraj, who favors Japanese companies that boast differentiated products.

Wall St slips on debt ceiling uncertainty

Stocks had rallied over the past two sessions on growing confidence a deal to raise the $31.4 trillion debt limit could be reached in coming days, with the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) climbing more than 2%. For the week, the Dow gained 0.38%, the S&P 500 climbed 1.65% and the Nasdaq advanced 3.04%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq notched their biggest weekly percentage gains since the final week of March. [1/2] Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., April 14, 2023. A super-charged two-year rally, which saw Chinese spot lithium carbonate prices rise by tenfold, went into brutal reverse over the first part of this year. The slump in China's spot price dragged down the whole lithium pricing chain from spodumene concentrate to hydroxide, albeit to highly varying degrees. But lithium's roller-coaster ride highlights the important role China's spot market and the Wuxi futures exchange play in the fast-growing industry's price discovery process. Many lithium buyers, in other words, will be paying higher prices this year whatever happens in the Chinese spot market. The collapse in China's spot price has far exceeded the decline in the price of Australian spodumene, another closely tracked market indicator.

The benchmark S&P 500 index (.SPX) rebounded from early declines on news that top U.S. congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy said a deal to raise or suspend the debt ceiling could potentially be reached in time to hold a House vote next week. On Wednesday, President Joe Biden and McCarthy reiterated their aim to strike a deal soon to raise the $31.4 trillion federal debt ceiling and agreed to talk as soon as Sunday. The debt ceiling has drawn attention away from uncertainty about the Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a 1.31-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.14-to-1 ratio favored advancers. The S&P 500 posted 27 new 52-week highs and seven new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 88 new highs and 83 new lows.
The Commerce Department reported retail sales rose 0.4% in April, short of the estimate for an increase of 0.8%. That slowing along with recent negotiations over the U.S. debt ceiling has focused attention on when the central bank will pause hiking, or cut interest rates. While the market is currently pricing in a rate cut by the end of the year, recent comments from Fed officials suggested they are not ready to cut rates soon. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said she does not think the central bank can hold interest rates steady yet. LONDON, May 17 (Reuters) - U.S. crypto firm Ripple has bought Switzerland-based crypto custody firm Metaco for $250 million, in its first major acquisition, Ripple said on Wednesday. Investor interest in crypto assets has cooled following a drop in cryptocurrency prices in 2022 and series of collapses at major crypto firms, including U.S. exchange FTX. Investors have become increasingly cautious about where and how crypto assets are stored, after crypto platforms freezing withdrawals left them facing large losses. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said he expected increased demand from institutional investors for crypto custody services. More than half of the $250 million acquisition was paid for in cash, and the rest in equity, Ripple said.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has been waging a campaign to regulate cryptocurrencies since 2017, arguing it has the authority to oversee many digital coins and the platforms that trade them. The SEC can only regulate digital coins that are classified as securities, a category that includes assets such as stocks and bonds. SEC Chair Gary Gensler has said most crypto tokens fall within that category. That means many were distributed illegally, because securities can only be sold to the public if they are registered with the SEC and the issuers provide financial and risk disclosures.
It increased interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, as expected, and signaled it could pause further hikes. The unanimous decision lifted the U.S. central bank's benchmark overnight interest rate to the 5.00%-5.25% range, the 10th consecutive increase since March 2022. Powell said the Fed still views inflation as too high, and said it was too soon to say the rate hike cycle is over. All of the major S&P 500 sectors ended lower, with energy (.SPNY) and financials (.SPSY) down the most. The S&P 500 posted 24 new 52-week highs and 12 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 64 new highs and 266 new lows.
As recession fears keep flaring up again on Wall Street, investors can find safety in cheap, dependable, defensive stocks, according to UBS. The UBS playbook advises investors to stick to defensive stocks rather than the types of cyclical companies stocks that have benefited from high inflation. To be sure, investors have worried that defensive stocks have grown too expensive. But UBS pointed to several defensive groups that remain cheap, including telecom and insurance. Given this backdrop, here are some of UBS' cheap defensive stocks.
