US stocks rose to fresh records Wednesday as traders took in cool inflation and Fed comments. AdvertisementUS stocks rose on Wednesday as investors took in cool inflation data and the Federal Reserve's latest guidance on rate cuts, helping the S&P 500 to another record close. The 10-year Treasury fell seven basis points to 6.33%, rising from steeper losses earlier in the day after the central bank updated its outlook to include fewer rate cuts than previously expected. FOMC members said they didn't believe it was "appropriate" to cut rates until they had gained more confidence inflation is trending back to 2%. Fed fund futures show that investors see a 62% chance the Fed will cut rates three times or more by year-end, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

The reason for that is mostly the American consumer, with spending accounting for about 70% of gross domestic product. Dollar steadies before inflation test; yen brushes off Tokyo CPI
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar was licking wounds against peer currencies on Friday after a downward revision to U.S. GDP for the first quarter suggested room for rate cuts this year, while investors braced for inflation data. The dollar index , which measures the currency against six major peers, consolidated around 104.82 after dipping as low as 104.63 overnight. Softer U.S. consumer price inflation data earlier in May rekindled rate cut expectations for this year, weakening the dollar across the board and setting it on track to post its first monthly losses in 2024. "All told, the Tokyo CPI leaves us confident that nationwide underlying inflation will fall below 2% as soon as July." Price data for the euro zone is due on Friday, following a stronger-than-expected April inflation reading for Germany on Wednesday.

Inflation Ticks Up in the Eurozone
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( Melissa Eddy | More About Melissa Eddy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The annual rate of inflation in the countries that use the euro accelerated slightly in May, driven by a jump in the cost of services and food. The headline inflation rate was a bit higher than economists expected. The same was true for core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, which came in at 2.9 percent in May, versus 2.7 percent in April. The numbers for May showed the first uptick in overall and core inflation this year, highlighting the difficulties policymakers at the European Central Bank face in the final stretch of reaching their aim to bring inflation down to 2 percent. Three of the area’s largest economies, Germany, France and Spain, all saw annual inflation speed up in May.

Medline Industries, a medical supply company, is recalling about 1.5 million portable adult bed rails in the United States and Canada after two reported deaths involving the product, federal safety regulators said. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday that users of the Medline Bed Assist Bar can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the product and the side of a mattress. “This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation,” the agency said in a statement. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Medline for a refund.”The commission said that Medline received two reports of deaths associated with the Bed Assist Bars. The deaths took place in July 2019 and November 2023 and involved the entrapment of a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina, according to the agency.

But I think that’s nearing an end, and so I would expect a slowdown in consumer spending. I’m not so sure that’s going to happen this time because their balance sheets and cash flows aren’t as strong.

That doesn’t mean the battle against inflation is won. Walmart saw first-quarter sales at stores open at least a year climb 3.8% from the prior year, in part thanks to its ability to keep prices low even as inflation remains sticky. “Our combination of everyday low prices plus a large number of rollbacks is resonating” with consumers, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on a call with analysts. Investors will get more inflation data next week from the Personal Consumption Expenditures index for April. Without that discount, the combined fine would have topped £88 million ($112 million).

Nestle is launching a new frozen-food brand, Vital Pursuit, aimed at the growing market of consumers who are using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. In October, Walmart's U.S. CEO John Furner told Bloomberg that people who pick up GLP-1 drugs from its pharmacies are buying less food, typically with fewer calories. But Nestle sees an opportunity to cater to those consumers through Vital Pursuit. Vital Pursuit's packaging won't include mentions of GLP-1 medications, but Nestle said the company will more directly connect the brand to the drugs on social media. The food company expects that its global growth will slow this year as inflation-weary consumers buy less of its products.
