It was a few weeks after protests erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, where a white police officer killed Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old.
Thomas started writing about it in her blog, Green Girl Leah.
She created another platform bearing the phrase to educate people about environmental justice.
The Intersectional Environmentalism account has amassed some 430,000 followers; there is also a nonprofit and a book.
