Commuters cycles past the Bank of England (BOE), left, in the City of London, UK, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate decision is scheduled for release on Sept. 19. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday said it would hold interest rates steady following its initial cut in August, even after the U.S. Federal Reserve opted for a jumbo rate cut the day before. The Monetary Policy Committee voted by 8 to 1 to hold, with the dissenting member voting for a 0.25 percentage point cut. Many strategists had expected a smaller 25 basis point cut at the September meeting, despite market pricing through this week pointing to more than 50% probability of the more aggressive option.

Bank of England in the City of London as economists and mortgage holders await this week's interest rate announcement on 28th July 2024 in London, United Kingdom. LONDON — European markets were poised to open higher as investors digested the U.S. Federal Reserve's first interest rate cut in four years and looked ahead to the Bank of England's rate decision later in the session. Back in Europe, investor attention is now turning to the Bank of England, with the central bank largely expected to hold rates steady at 5%. The Fed's jumbo rate cut is unlikely to impact the Bank of England, according to economists, as the central bank ratified its decision around lunchtime Wednesday, hours before the U.S. announcement. Also on Thursday, Norway's central bank will deliver its latest interest rate decision.

They were lucky enough to lock in a 2.79% mortgage rate when they bought it — the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is over 5% today. However, one non-financial factor began to lure the couple away from Colorado: family. Due to Massachussets' "higher cost of living," Nicole said the move has had a significant impact on their finances. For these people, buying a new home could mean taking on a significantly higher mortgage rate and monthly mortgage payment than they previously had. Lastly, while they live closer to family, Nicole said this hasn't saved them money on childcare.

USPS will work “around the clock” and implement “extraordinary measures” to ensure the timely delivery of mail-in voting, DeJoy said. A record 43% of voters cast mail ballots in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The level isn’t expected to be as high this year, but many states across the country have expanded the availability of mail-in voting. The USPS says during the 2020 election, which was conducted amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it delivered nearly 99% of ballots from voters to election officials within seven days. Specifically, the election officials said they’ve experienced “exceptionally long delivery times” for election mail, including ballots, which could lead to those ballots getting rejected because they didn’t arrive before the deadline.

Talen's surge comes on the back of its deal to sell a data center campus to Amazon Web Services and supply the facility with nuclear power from the Susquehanna station northwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The deal is viewed as a trailblazing agreement for the power industry, and Wall Street has taken notice. A year ago, Talen was not covered by any Wall Street analysts, according to FactSet data. And Talen's assets are located almost entirely in the PJM grid, a predominantly mid-Atlantic region where power prices are expected to explode as demand outstrips supply due in part to growing data center load. Data center developers are expected to spend $250 billion annually on data centers, Barclays analyst Nicholas Campanella said in a note this week.

Washington CNN —Sales of previously owned homes in the United States fell sharply in August, despite mortgage rates plummeting that month. Lower borrowing costs will likely entice buyersMortgage rates could very well come down even more, but that would depend on economic data making it clear that the Fed would cut rates further. The Fed doesn’t control mortgage rates, but its action do influence them through movements in bond yields. Mortgage rates track the 10-year US Treasury yield, which moves in anticipation of the Fed’s decision on rates. Yun told reporters it could take three or four months for lower mortgage rates to boost demand for housing.

The best way to approach health care, in addition to traditional medicine, in Hotz's opinion, is social prescribing. This is the future Julia Hotz, author of " The Connection Cure ," hopes will become a reality in every country. Or you can create your own art to channel some of the heavy emotions you're feeling into something beautiful. Search for belonging when you're feeling lonelyOne of the most fundamental human needs is to have a sense of belonging, Hotz says. At its much-anticipated meeting Wednesday, the Fed approved a half percentage point, or 50 basis point, cut to its benchmark funds rate that ran counter to the 25 basis point move that many Wall Street economists and strategists had been expecting. The benchmark fed funds rate now stands at 4.75% to 5.00% after Wednesday's move. Futures market pricing Thursday suggested a 25 basis point move in November followed by a 50 basis point cut in December, according to the CME Group's FedWatch. A basis point equals 0.01%. “Given that sleep is highly visible as a risk factor, non-stigmatizing, and highly treatable … we suggest study of sleep as a risk factor and critical intervention target for youth suicide,” said senior study author Dr. Rebecca Bernert, a suicidologist and founder of the Stanford Suicide Prevention Research Laboratory in California, via email. Suicide is a leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14, a group that also has high rates of sleep disturbance, according to the study. And sleep disturbances “have emerged as an evidence-based risk factor for suicidal behaviors” among adults, regardless of whether a person has depressive symptoms, the authors said. At that time, guardians answered questionnaires about their child’s sleep health, which included factors such as problems with falling or staying asleep, waking up, excessive sleepiness, sleep-disorder breathing, excessive sweating during sleep, and behaviors that occur when someone partially awakes from deep sleep. Supporting your child’s healthAt all ages, your kids need good nighttime habits that support healthy sleep, Willard said.
