YUNG-YU MA, CHIEF INVESTMENT STRATEGIST, BMO WEALTH MANAGEMENT, CHICAGO“The better-than-expected CPI numbers are welcome but show a lot of underlying volatility. What Powell said is that we are going to need a few more reads on good CPI data before he can say we’re done." Shelter is the main contributor to inflation and everyone should know by now that it’s a garbage indicator of where inflation is headed. ART HOGAN, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, B. RILEY WEALTH, NEW YORK"A softer than expected inflation report is acting as a tailwind for markets. “The good news is that we saw a significant sequential improvement, inflation is clearly moving in the right direction.

OSLO, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Norway's Equinor (EQNR.OL) and partners are delaying the development of what could have been the world's northernmost Arctic oilfield in production, citing rising costs and supply industry capacity constraints, the oil major said on Thursday. Equinor was now aiming for an investment decision on the Wisting oilfield in the offshore Arctic by the end of 2026 instead of December this year, it said. Wisting would have been the fourth hydrocarbon field in production in the Norwegian Arctic. The Norwegian Environment Agency said this year Equinor had failed to show it was safe to produce oil from Wisting, all year-around in harsh Arctic conditions. Equinor and partners say they could have developed Wisting in an environmentally safe way.

"Despite macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, the shopping patterns of our consumers are so far largely unchanged," Chief Executive Alexander Lacik said in a statement. Pandora still expects full-year organic growth between 4% and 6% and reaffirmed an outlook for an operating profit margin at 25-25.5%. The company reported third-quarter sales of 5.26 billion Danish crowns ($712.64 million), slightly above an average of 5.16 billion crowns expected by analysts in a poll by the company. Pandora also announced it would pay a total of 5.3 billion crowns to its shareholders this year, equating to about 13% of its market capitalisation.
Danish train standstill on Saturday caused by cyber attack

COPENHAGEN, Nov 3 (Reuters) - A major breakdown of Denmark's train network during the weekend was the result of a hacker attack on an IT subcontractor's software testing environment, Danish train operator DSB said on on Thursday. "We were contacted by our subcontractor who told us that their testing environment had been compromised by criminal hackers," DSB's chief of security, Carsten Dam Sonderbo-Jacobsen, told public broadcaster DR."It hasn't targeted infrastructure or DSB, it was economic crime," Sonderbo-Jacobsen told Reuters, adding that it was not clear who was behind the attack, but that investigations were ongoing. While not a direct attack on DSB, the attack prompted subcontractor Supeo to shut down its servers, which in turn affected locomotive drivers' ability to operate the trains for several hours on Saturday, according to DR. Its other major shareholder, PSD Investment, will provide the same amount through "direct and indirect financial and liquidity support," Polestar said. "We welcome the continued support from our major shareholders at a time when the capital markets are volatile and unpredictable," Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement. Volvo, like other major carmakers, has in recent years invested heavily in making its own electric vehicles and has also said it was committed to supporting Polestar. Volvo aims to sell only fully electric cars by 2030, while Polestar has a goal to launch three more cars by 2026. In February, Volvo formed a joint venture with battery manufacturer Northvolt to build a battery plant in Gothenburg which would produce battery cells specifically for electric Volvo and Polestar cars.
Fed delivers fourth 75 bp hike, signals scale-back coming

This statement clearly suggests input from Vice Chair Brainard and opens the door for the Fed to slow down the pace of future rate hikes. Monetary policy today is not sufficiently tight enough. We’ll know when the Fed is done tightening; they’ll tell us by simply saying that monetary policy is sufficiently restrictive. “The last thing we need to see regarding what the Fed will do in the short run is the election. If there’s a sense that fiscal policy will be more cooperative with monetary policy, it will make the Fed’s job easier.”Compiled by the Global Finance & Markets Breaking News teamOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
COPENHAGEN, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Denmark's Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who narrowly won Tuesday's general election, handed in her resignation on Wednesday and said she would begin exploring a coalition across the political middle. The prime minister had campaigned on the need for a broad coalition across the traditional left-right divide, arguing that unity is needed at a time of international uncertainty. The talks are expected to be lengthy as both friends and foes of Frederiksen have expressed scepticism about such a coalition, making the outcome uncertain. The left-leaning bloc, which includes the Social Democratic party, won 90 seats, the slimmest possible majority in the 179-seat parliament, while the right-wing bloc won 73 seats and a newly formed centrist party secured 16. Frederiksen could begin negotiations with former prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his new non-aligned centrist party, the Moderates, which have also campaigned for a coalition of mainstream parties.
HELSINKI, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Finland's Nokian Tyres (TYRES.HE) on Tuesday said it will invest 650 million euros ($645.19 million) to build a new passenger car tyre factory in Romania. Built to make 6 million tyres per year, the Romanian plant is set to replace some of the lost output from Nokian's now divested Russian operation which had the annual capacity to produce 17 million passenger car tyres. The new plant will allow the company to "start building the new Nokian Tyres without Russia", Chief Executive Jukka Moisio said. The new factory, which Nokian aims to make the industry's first zero CO2 emissions plant, will employ 500 people. Nokian said it chose Oradea in northwest Romania because it was conveniently located to sell tyres in central Europe and green energy was available near the site.
An inverted yield curve occurs when yields on shorter-dated Treasuries rise above those for longer-term ones. Here is a quick primer on what an inverted yield curve means, how it has predicted recession, and what it might be signaling now. The yield curve, which plots the return on all Treasury securities, typically slopes upward as the payout increases with the duration. "It's not unusual to get a yield curve inversion but it is unusual to get one of this magnitude. When the yield curve steepens, banks can borrow at lower rates and lend at higher rates.
COPENHAGEN, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Former prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen looked set to become the king-maker after Denmark's election on Tuesday in which neither the ruling left nor right-wing opposition looked set to win a majority in parliament, according to an exit poll. It indicated that Rasmussen's new Moderates party, founded only four months ago, stood to become the fourth biggest in parliament with 17 seats. The right-wing opposition appeared on course for 73 seats, and could thus also form a government with Rasmussen's mandate. The Liberals, Rasmussen's ex-party and the main opposition, looked set to win only 24 seats, down from 43 previously. Frederiksen campaigned for a broad coalition across the political middle, arguing that political unity is needed at a time of international uncertainty.
STOCKHOLM, Oct 31 (Reuters) - The Swedish economy is heading into a recession next year, driven by rampant inflation and the war in Ukraine, the country's new finance minister said on Monday. "Sweden's economic outlook is gloomy and we're heading for a tough winter," Svantesson told a news conference, adding that there was a high risk developments will be even weaker than the main scenario. Svantesson pledged to stick to Sweden's fiscal policy framework under which public finances are run at a 0.3% of GDP surplus over an economic cycle. "For us and me, it is important that fiscal policy in this situation is well balanced, that fiscal policy does not fuel inflation. And we will stick to the fiscal policy framework, and thereby ensure that we have room for manoeuvre if next year becomes even more difficult," she said.
Denmark to lower preparedness level for power and gas sector

COPENHAGEN, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Denmark's Energy Agency on Monday recommended to the country's transmission system operator that the level of preparedness for the power and gas sector be lowered to "yellow" from "orange", though it would still remain elevated. The preparedness level was raised to orange, the next-highest level shortly after leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines occurred last month. Cracks found in Finnish OL3 nuclear reactor's feedwater pumps
  + stars: | 2022-10-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
COPENHAGEN, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Cracks of a few centimetres have been found in all four feedwater pumps of Finland's Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear reactor, operator TVO said on Friday, adding it was still unclear how the damage would impact the scheduled commissioning of the plant. The damage to Europe's largest nuclear reactor is a setback for Finland, where the national grid operator has warned of potential power blackouts in the coming winter if OL3 could not reliably supply electricity. "The root cause of the cracks found in the pump impellers is still unknown. The possible schedule impact will be communicated as soon as the results are available," TVO said on Twitter. Under construction since 2005, OL3 was originally meant to start operation in 2009, but has faced several technical mishaps, which sparked costly delays and a lengthy legal battle.
Sweden to further investigate Nord Stream pipeline damage
  + stars: | 2022-10-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
OSLO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Sweden has ordered additional investigations to be carried out of the damage done last month to the two Nord Stream pipelines, the prosecutor in charge of the case said in a statement on Friday. Sweden and Denmark have both concluded that four leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 were caused by explosions, but have not said who might be responsible. "The Armed Forces have upon request decided to assist in the investigation," he added. The prosecutor said the armed forces had the resources and expertise to investigate the crime scene "in the way we wish" but declined further comment. Sweden's armed forces said this week that they were carrying out an independent investigation of the seabed around the leaks with minesweepers.
"Market demand in both Europe and North America for the full-year of 2023 is expected to further deteriorate, i.e. Electrolux (ELUXb.ST) in September warned profit would drop as high inflation and low consumer confidence squeezed demand and large investments in North America had yet to pay off. Samuelson told analysts and media in a call that the group had massive inefficiencies in supply chain and production in North America in the quarter. Samuelson said most of the charge related to trimming staff at Electrolux, which had 52,000 employees at the end of 2021. The North America division reported a loss of 1.2 billion crowns.

Danske Bank books $1.9 billion provision in Estonia case
  + stars: | 2022-10-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
COPENHAGEN, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Danske Bank (DANSKE.CO) on Thursday said it would book a 14 billion Danish crowns ($1.89 billion) provision in the third quarter related to the lender's involvement in a money laundering scandal in Estonia. "The discussions with U.S. and Danish authorities related to the Estonia matter are now at a stage where Danske Bank can reliably estimate the total financial impact of a potential coordinated resolution," CEO Carsten Egeriis said. As a consequence, Danske Bank now expects a net loss "better than" 5.5 billion crowns this year, down from a previous forecast for a 10 billion-12 billion crowns net profit. Danske Bank in 2018 booked a separate provision of 1.5 billion crowns. Oct 27 (Reuters) - Swedish automaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) expects lower wholesale volumes this year, it said on Thursday as it reported a drop in third-quarter operating profit, hit by higher costs and lower volumes. The Gothenburg-based company now expects 2022 wholesale volumes to be "slightly lower" compared with the year before, down from a previous forecast for better wholesales volumes than in 2021. In addition, Volvo said it had been forced to conduct spot buying of semiconductors to fill production shortfall and logistics costs, in addition to mounting raw material costs that all hurt its operating profit. Only this week, the shortage saw Volvo having to shut one of its Swedish factories for a week. Stockholm-listed Volvo, majority owned by Chinese automotive company Geely Holding [RIC:RIC:GEELY.UL], said its quarterly operating profit fell to 2.1 billion Swedish crowns ($193.41 million) from 3.3 billion a year ago.
COPENHAGEN, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Denmark's central bank raised its key interest rate by 0.60 percentage points to 1.25% on Thursday to its highest level in thirteen years, following a rate hike earlier in the day by the European Central Bank. "The interest rate increase is a consequence of the increase by the European Central Bank of its main monetary policy rate," the central bank said in a statement. Denmark's move puts its main interest rate at its highest level since August 2009. Normally, the central bank follows the ECB's rate moves, but this time it raised rates less, Danske Bank chief economist Las Olsen said in a note. "This time they have chosen a slightly smaller interest rate increase because they actually want a slightly weaker crown," Olsen added.
Nord Stream operator surveys pipeline leak site

COPENHAGEN/BERLIN, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Nord Stream AG, the operator of the leaking Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, has sent a chartered ship to waters off the coast of Sweden to survey the damage for the first time, the company said on Thursday. Sweden and Denmark have concluded that four Nord Stream leaks identified last month were caused by explosions, but have not said who might be responsible. Nord Stream AG, which is majority-owned by Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM), said a specially equipped vessel had arrived in the exclusive economic zone off Sweden, confirming earlier comments by the Swedish Navy. Nord Stream AG said it was still awaiting a permit to assess damage to the pipeline section in the Danish economic zone. Norway, now Europe's biggest supplier of natural gas, has increased its pipeline inspections in the wake of the suspected blasts on the Nord Stream system last month, the head of the country's gas supply infrastructure told Reuters.

COPENHAGEN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Danish brewer Carlsberg (CARLb.CO) on Wednesday reported third-quarter sales broadly in line with expectations and lifted its profit forecast for the year despite weakening consumer sentiment. Sales in Asia grew 19% in the period, with volumes up 10%, but the firm cautioned that the outlook remained uncertain. Carlsberg's shares were down 2.5% at 1222 GMT, recouping much of its losses in early trading on the weak Heineken outlook. It also increased its share buy-back programme for the fourth quarter to 1.5 billion crowns from 1 billion crowns in the third quarter. The firm, which released the numbers one day earlier than planned, does not provide earnings in its third-quarter trading statements.
Truck maker Volvo to build battery modules plant in Belgium

STOCKHOLM, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Swedish truck maker Volvo Group (VOLVb.ST) said on Wednesday its plant in Ghent in Belgium would start to produce battery modules in 2025. "The investment decision to install battery module manufacturing capacity in Ghent is another important step for the Volvo Group to shape its future value chain for battery systems," it said in a statement. The new manufacturing line would be able to use battery cells both from partners and from a planned battery cell plant in Sweden, Volvo Group said. Volvo Group has an ambition that at least 35% of vehicles sold will be electric by 2030. Its plant in Gothenburg in Sweden builds heavy-duty electric trucks, and the Ghent truck factory will start doing so too next year.
Companies Nord Stream AG FollowCOPENHAGEN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sweden's Armed Forces said on Wednesday they were back at the site of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline leaks in the southern part of the Baltic Sea to further investigate the suspected blasts. World leaders have called the damage to the pipes, discovered last month in Danish and Swedish economic zones, an act of sabotage, without saying who could be responsible. Swedish prosecutors and police earlier this month wrapped up a crime scene investigation with the help of the Navy and Coast Guard. "The Swedish Armed Forces are this week carrying out complementary seabed surveys at the gas leaks with minesweepers," the armed forces said on Twitter on Wednesday. "The investigation is done at our own initiative and is not part of the police investigation."
Telenor Q3 gets surprise boost from one-off gain in Pakistan
  + stars: | 2022-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Dented by soaring inflation and intense competition, the company's shares have lost 35% year-to-date, closing at a 10-year low on Tuesday. "However, the negative effects are, this quarter, countered by a reversal of SIM tax provision in Pakistan." The one-off gain could help Telenor meet its annual goal of unchanged profit versus last year, it said. The group maintained its investment forecast for the year, predicting capital expenditure would amount to 16-17% of sales, and reiterated that service revenue would see "low single-digit growth". "We see positive trends for mobile service revenue in the Nordic region, with a growth of 4% in the third quarter," Brekke said.
