AP —A Philadelphia teenager who authorities say wanted to travel overseas and make bombs for terrorist organizations will be tried as an adult. Prosecutors say Abdul-Rahman conducted at least 12 tests on homemade bombs near his family’s home before he was arrested and was close to being able to detonate devices with a blast radius of several hundred yards. Law enforcement began investigating Abdul-Rahman after they received electronic communications between him and terrorist groups in Syria, prosecutors said. The communications indicated that Abdul-Rahman wanted to become a bombmaker for these groups, identified as Katibat al Tawhid wal Jihad (KTJ) and Hay’at Tahrir al Sham (HTS). As the investigation into Abdul-Rahman continued, authorities learned he was buying military and tactical gear as well as materials that could be used in homemade bombs, prosecutors said.

Now, a new analysis by physicists based in China and France suggests the artist had a deep, intuitive understanding of the mathematical structure of turbulent flow. In one sense, you could say that Wednesday’s decision by the Federal Reserve to cut rates was of minimal importance. The interest rate the Fed more or less directly controls — the federal funds rate — is the rate at which banks lend one another money overnight. For one thing, Fed rate changes tend to percolate into longer-term interest rates that really do matter for the economy. For example, the series of rate hikes the Fed undertook in 2022 and 2023 drove 30-year fixed mortgage interest rates up to almost 8 percent from about 3 percent. Most of their decisions are based on the same data about unemployment, inflation and so on available to anyone with an internet connection.

On Wednesday, Boeing announced it will be temporarily furloughing a "large number" of white-collar employees. The news comes after around 30,000 Boeing workers began a strike on Friday after rejecting a new pay contract. "We are initiating temporary furloughs over the coming days that will impact a large number of US-based executives, managers, and employees," Kelly Ortberg, the CEO of Boeing, wrote in an email to employees. In a union vote on September 12, workers voted against an agreement that Boeing and the labor union for machinists and aerospace workers had proposed. Chief investment strategist Brian Belski lifted his year-end target for the broad index by 500 points to 6,100. That new forecast implies the S & P 500 can climb 8.6% from Wednesday's close. .SPX YTD mountain S & P 500 YTD Belski said his update came after yet another rebound in equities pushed the index to trade around his prior target. Even if the S & P 500 tests lows seen during September's choppy trading, the investing strategist said he remains confident that it can rise into year-end. The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters also released survey data showing more rank-and-file members preferred to endorse Trump than Harris. Still, Harris has won the endorsement of just about every other major labor union in the country (the International Association of Fire Fighters remains a notable holdout).
