"People were dying like flies," Yan Gorjaltsan told Insider. Gorjaltsan described the hospital as a scene out of a World War II movie — nurses and doctors frantically taking care of patients while others scream for help. "Even though we always have our differences, when something like this starts, everybody just stops talking and starts working," Gorjaltsan told Insider.

Butler, a Democratic insider and former labor leader, had never held public office before joining the Senate. Under California election rules, the two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the November general election, regardless of party. But to Democratic consultant Garry South, who has run six statewide campaigns in California, including for former Gov. Then, on the campaign side, Butler could talk about Democratic legislative wins and building on Feinstein’s legacy. National Democratic fundraising could pose a challenge in 2024, since the California Senate seat is expected to stay in Democratic hands when control of the chamber will be decided elsewhere.

Gavin Newsom on Saturday gave the greenlight for the state's transportation and energy officials to figure out how to install solar panels, battery storage and other renewable energy sites along highways. According to the state's Department of Transportation, California has 250 state highways containing more than 15,000 miles of road. The empty land alongside those roads could be used to generate one gigawatt of potential solar energy, which could power over 270,000 California homes, according to a joint report from Environment California, a nonprofit backer of SB 49, and highway solar advocate The Ray. In 2008, Oregon became the first state to develop a solar highway project, which now has nearly 600 solar panels. Using empty space along highways to install clean energy sites would help alleviate pressure on the state's deserts where many solar panels are currently housed.

Next EU chief will need cash more than trade wars

What she sidestepped was how to find more cash and convince member states to pay up. Von der Leyen, or her successor, will have to figure out how to pay for enlargement. Von der Leyen tapped into trade frustrations with her pledge to investigate and possibly punish Chinese subsidies for car and battery makers. During her first term, von der Leyen succeeded in connecting the EU with bond investors via the 800 billion euro NextGenerationEU borrowing programme. A second term will require even more finesse to convince EU member states to raise money not just from markets, but from themselves.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 9 (Reuters) - Union workers at Volvo Group (VOLVb.ST)-owned Mack Trucks went on strike on Monday after overwhelmingly rejecting a proposed five-year contract, the United Auto Workers said, the latest tentative labor agreement to be voted down. In online forums, some Mack workers complained the raise was too small to keep up with inflation. Canadian workers at GM also face a contract talk deadline at midnight on Monday that could lead to another strike. Mack President Roy said the company "clearly demonstrated our commitment to good-faith bargaining by arriving at a tentative agreement that was endorsed by both the International UAW and the UAW Mack Truck Council." "The most serious outcome for crude is that the conflict escalates into a more devastating proxy war which could affect crude supply," said Rebecca Babin, senior energy trader at CIBC Private Wealth US. Israel's port of Ashkelon and its oil terminal have been shut in the wake of the conflict, sources said. Goldman Sachs said the conflict reduced the likelihood of normalization of Israel's relations with Saudi Arabia, and the associated boost to Saudi production over time. The conflict is likely to lead to higher volatility and speculation in oil markets, the CEO of Brazil's Petrobras (PETR4.SA) said. High oil price due to the conflict could bolster inflation, analysts said, forcing rate hikes that could dampen demand.
