Nvidia could one day dominate the U.S. stock market benchmark S & P 500 by a magnitude that has never been seen before, more than doubling the influence of past leaders like Apple and Nokia, along with current leader Microsoft. "History suggests NVDA could become 10-15% of S & P 500," wrote chip analyst Mark Lipacis in a note Friday. "We have observed that at each successive computing era, the ecosystem players represent a larger weighting of the S & P 500." Nvidia is already doing most of the heavy lifting for the S & P 500. The chipmaker is responsible for about 37% of the S & P 500's year-to-date 12% return.

When is the next stock market crash taking place? It's a question I get asked often since I wrote "A History of the United States in Five Crashes – Stock Market Meldowns That Defined a Nation." Until now, I've always been able to counsel that stock market crashes are comfortingly rare events that only occur when elements align, and that a crash is unlikely in the near future. The first is a frothy stock market. It is no accident that the first modern stock market crash, the Panic of 1907, occurred after the biggest two-year rally in the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average .

Like Tesla and Palantir, GameStop was a popular stock to short among hedge funds, though GameStop took it to a whole new level. "That's how I feel about these GME posts that are using the 'P' and get in so we can cause an 'S' words that are no-nos." That was enough to make WallStreetBets the seventh-largest holder of GameStop stock, ahead of some of the big Wall Street investment firms that had shown interest in the stock. The New York Fed’s May Survey of Consumer Expectations showed improvement of people’s perceptions of their current financial situation as well as their outlook for a year from now. Households’ expectations for highest US stock prices improved to a three-year high. In May, home price expectations were still high, unchanged from the month before; however, inflation expectations dipped — and that’s a good sign for the Federal Reserve. Monday’s survey showed that the three- and five-year inflation expectations were unchanged. When the April CPI showed inflation on a cooler trajectory than it had started the year, the major US stock indexes all surged to record highs.

The European Central Bank began easing interest rates on Thursday, cutting its benchmark rate by 0.25%. Investors and economists expect the Federal Reserve to follow suit and cut interest rates in September. This combination means there's a good chance that the September cut Wall Street is praying for may never materialize. The US already has somewhat higher interest rates than other countries — the Fed's benchmark rate is 5.25%- 5.50%. And in Asian economies, where interest rates are already significantly lower than in the US, things could get even messier.

The S & P 500 made a new record high, its 25 th of the year. And on the surface, there is a stolid calm that suggests a system in comfortable equilibrium, the market achieving a kind of homeostasis. Four of the past five days last week, the S & P 500 moved less than 0.2%. The S & P 500 is up almost 2% since its closing peak at the end of the first quarter, perhaps the moment of maximum belief in a seamless soft economic landing. Three stocks together now account for fully 20% of the S & P 500 market value, mocking the notion of diversification and dashing most active investors' hopes of beating the bogey.

"It was f---ed up," Cuban told Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take" podcast in 2020. The business bounced back, and Cuban sold MicroSolutions five years later, making him a millionaire. Russia's President Vladimir Putin gestures as he delivers a speech during the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Saint Petersburg on June 7, 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that nearly 40% of the country's trade turnover is now in rubles as the share conducted in dollars, euros and other "non-friendly" Western currencies has fallen away. Putin said payments for Russian exports in "so-called 'toxic' currencies of non-friendly states" had halved over the last year. "With that, the share of the ruble in import and export operations is increasing, now standing at almost 40%," Putin said, according to a translation. The West has sought to cut off Russia's $2 trillion economy in response to Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gestures, at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in New Delhi, India, June 4, 2024. Adnan Abidi | ReutersThis report is from this week's CNBC's "Inside India" newsletter which brings you timely, insightful news and market commentary on the emerging powerhouse and the big businesses behind its meteoric rise. Far from rewarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party with a supermajority — as polls had predicted — Indians elected 240 BJP lawmakers to India's 543-seat Parliament, which falls short of a simple majority for Modi's party. However, as the largest party, the BJP will form a coalition government thanks to its alliance with smaller parties ahead of the elections. This "radical transformation" is expected to lead to a significantly more efficient economy and help India's currency, according to Sullivan.
