A decline in stocks accelerated after Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that it was too early to declare victory against price pressures. Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesThe S&P 500’s shot at its longest winning streak since 2004 appeared within grasp for much of Thursday’s trading session. Then Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and the Treasury market crashed the party. Major indexes fluttered between small gains and losses in quiet trading through the early afternoon. They turned firmly into the red after an auction of government debt showed lower-than-expected demand and propelled Treasury yields higher.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Quinn Ewers finished what he started last season, passing for 349 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 11 Texas to a 34-24 victory over third-ranked Alabama on Saturday night in a huge win for a program trying to climb back into national championship contention. This amounted to a welcome-to-the-Southeastern Conference moment for a program set to join Alabama & Co. next season. Alabama had its 21-game home winning streak snapped along with a 57-game regular-season binge against nonconference teams dating to Nick Saban's debut season, 2007. Alabama's Jalen Milroe delivered big plays passing and running, but also was picked off twice on bad decisions.

Since the start of July, McDonald's has been among the worst-performing members of the 30-stock blue-chip Dow, down more than 7% entering Thursday's session. The advance comes after Wells Fargo upgraded McDonald's to a buy-equivalent rating, saying the company's "innovation engine is firing on all cylinders." McDonald's (MCD) returning to its winning ways would be a much-needed development for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Thursday, particularly in September, a historically weak month on Wall Street. "I think that this could matter," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street," referring to Wells Fargo's bullish call. At the same time, Spiegel was forced to reckon with charges against the lack of diversity in Snap's workforce. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel Michael Kovac/Getty ImagesAt an internal meeting in July 2020, Spiegel said that the company keeps its diversity reports private because releasing data would reinforce the idea that minority groups are underrepresented in the tech industry. Later that month, though, the company released its first diversity report. The report broke down employee demographics going back all the way back to when Snap was first founded in 2011. It showed that Black and Latinx employees comprised less than 11% of the company's staff and less than a third of the company's staff identified as women.

New York CNN —Snapchat says it’s working to make its app even safer for teen users. The company also launched a series of YouTube videos for parents about the features and an updated website laying out its teen safety and parental control policies. And since then, Snapchat — like other platforms — has rolled out a variety of new teen safety and parental supervision tools. The app’s other existing teen safety measures include prohibiting young users from having public profiles and having teens’ Snap Map location-sharing tool turned off by default. Snapchat will also impose a new strike system for accounts promoting content inappropriate for teens in its Stories and Spotlight sections, where users can share content publicly on the app.

This is because blast furnaces operate around the clock and need more workers. Goncalves is also betting that producing iron ore in-house for blast furnaces, rather than sourcing scrap steel for electric arc furnaces, will give Cliffs a competitive edge. While a few carmakers use aluminum for automotive bodies, most prefer high-grade steel from blast furnaces. Cliffs' devotion to blast furnaces, which are unionized unlike some electric arc furnaces, won it the support of United Steelworkers. The union's international president Thomas Conway said it's backing Cliffs' bid for U.S. Steel because of Goncalves' commitment to blast furnaces.

A Huge Threat to the U.S. Budget Has Receded. For decades, runaway Medicare spending was the story of the federal budget. Budget news often sounds apocalyptic, but the Medicare trend has been unexpectedly good for federal spending, saving taxpayers a huge amount relative to projections. In a recent letter to the Senate Budget Committee, economists at the Congressional Budget Office described the huge reductions in its Medicare forecasts between 2010 and 2020. Medicare is growing more slowly than ever, but still more quickly than the rest of the federal budget.

Oil set to snap two-week losing streak on tightening supplies
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices were set to snap a two-week losing streak as they rose for a fourth consecutive session on Friday due to tightening supplies and expectations of the OPEC+ group of oil producers extending output cuts to the end of the year. U.S. crude inventories fell by a more-than-expected 10.6 million barrels last week, government data on Wednesday showed. Commercial crude oil inventories have plunged by 34 million barrels since the middle of July. A weaker U.S. dollar, which looks set to end a six week winning streak, also helped prices. A stronger dollar pressures oil demand by making the commodity more expensive for buyers holding other currencies.
