The UAW released more details of its tentative 4-1/2 year deal with GM <on Saturday. Temporary workers will have a faster path to full-time status and could see wages rise by about 50% immediately. The GM agreement will move more than 7,000 UAW workers in GM component plants, service parts warehouses and what GM calls "subsystems" operations up to the higher wage levels paid to assembly plant workers. "This contract has wage increases and economic gains like nothing we've ever seen before," UAW Vice President Mike Booth said.

But Samuel and her friend didn’t want to take any chances, so they started running. Panicking, the pair sprinted across the open farmland surrounding the festival site and dived into a ditch behind a line of large trees. Noah Kahan’s Rootsy Rock Revival
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Noah Kahan’s song “Stick Season” currently sits at No. But it’s more remarkable because “Stick Season” is the title track of an album released just over a year ago. That success arrives a few years into Kahan’s career, which began with more straight-ahead pop and shifted into rootsier territory during the pandemic. He inflects his songs with bits of Vermont attitude and lore, and has collaborated with Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves. On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about how Kahan’s niche stardom has given way to pop acclaim, how Vermont figures into his songwriting and sound, and how he revisits the rustic mainstream rock of the early 2010s.

We are actually going to be looking at this in the very early days of generative AI. casey newtonYeah, this feels like one of the big questions in AI right now. rebecca tushnetSo I see why you say that’s strange, but in fact, it’s exactly how you would make a general-purpose tool. But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

How the UAW's drive to 'end tiers' will change GM

The tentative 4-1/2 year deal will pull more than 7,000 UAW workers in GM component plants, service parts warehouses and what GM calls "subsystems" operations up to the higher wage levels paid to assembly plant workers. As at Ford and Stellantis, GM will raise pay for temporary workers and give them a faster path to full-time status and wages. Eliminating tiers of lower-paid UAW workers at the Detroit Three was a top priority for Fain and UAW bargainers. Fain and UAW members would often wear red t-shirts printed with the slogan "End Tiers" at rallies and on picket lines. GM "has been the worst actor" in creating tiers of lower-wage UAW employees within its operations, Booth said in an Oct. 20 video address.

Facing the threat of bankruptcy, weight-loss startup Calibrate was forced to make a tough deal with private equity firm Madryn Asset Management, according to company documents reviewed by Insider. Under the terms of the deal, Madryn took a 70% stake in Calibrate in exchange for just $20 million, the documents show. Calibrate, Madryn, Kenyon, and the company's VC backers didn't immediately return messages seeking comment for this story. Some longtime patients have regained much of the weight they lost after Calibrate failed to get them medications, Insider reported on Thursday. Under the deal, Madryn exchanged $20 million of its loans for senior equity in Calibrate.

Christina started taking Wegovy in September 2021 after getting a prescription through Calibrate, a startup that promises science-backed help with weight loss. She never received medication through Calibrate again, and she's since gained back all the weight she lost. Calibrate says its goal for Masters patients is to get them off weight-loss medications and help them maintain the weight loss they achieved. A former employee on Calibrate's clinical team said the startup allocated fewer doctors to second-year patients because those patients historically required less help from Calibrate. At least four second-year patients Insider spoke with said they sought refunds from Calibrate after they didn't receive the services they paid for.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

A jury in Illinois ordered Chicago-based Conagra Brands to pay $7.1 million to a Pennsylvania woman who was badly burned when a can of cooking spray caught fire at her workplace kitchen. The woman, Tammy Reese, was working in a kitchen at Hub City Club in Shippensburg, Penn., in May 2017 and using Pam cooking spray when it suddenly “exploded into a fireball, causing burns,” according to the complaint filed in 2019. Ms. Reese suffered second-degree burns on her head, face, hands and arms and spent weeks getting burn care, Ms. Reese’s lawyer, J. Craig Smith, said. The jury ruled in favor of Ms. Reese on counts that included liability, design defect, failure to warn, and negligence and willful and wanton conduct, according to documents filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday.

Shares of SolarEdge tumbled over 20% in extending trading Wednesday after the solar product manufacturer reported soft guidance for its fourth quarter amid demand struggles in the renewable energy sector. For the overall solar sector, SolarEdge said it expects revenue in the $275 million to $320 million range. At the time, Lando said installation rates for solar panels had declined though those rates typically increase during the third quarter. SolarEdge is based in Israel, but Lando said in October the Israel-Hamas war has not had an impact on manufacturing. The solar sector has faced headwinds over the past year as rising interest rates weigh on the demand for solar energy.

Opinion | Why Is Swearing So Much Fun?
  + stars: | 2023-11-01 | by ( Rebecca Roache | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Swearing can be so satisfying that it can help us withstand pain. As the linguists Keith Allan and Kate Burridge put it, the harmfulness of taboos “contaminates” certain words that refer to them, making those related words taboo, too. In prudish Victorian Britain, extremely lewd street names that had existed unproblematically throughout the country in the Middle Ages were bowdlerized. And in increasingly secular cultures the taboo around religious-themed words has waned. Consider, as Professors Allan and Burridge do, spilling salt, which was once both expensive and spiritually significant.
