Goldman Sachs' list of top-performing longs in hedge funds has seen outsized gains in 2024, a sign that moves made by these firms have paid off this year. The bank's so-called very important positions, or "VIP," list has climbed about 30% year to date. Goldman strategist Ben Snider noted that hedge funds shifted somewhat to cyclical industrials from defensives in the third quarter, allowing them to benefit from the postelection rally. Goldman has a running list of its very important stock picks within hedge fund long holdings. However, most analysts surveyed by LSEG rate the stock a buy or strong buy, consensus price targets suggests shares may drop more than 23%.

Tucked away in the frigid northern corner of Siberia are giant craters, some deep enough to fit a 15-story building. It's been fairly clear from the beginning that the craters are caused by some type of explosion deep underground. Researchers widely agreed that when these hydrates are damaged, they release methane gas, which is what's triggering the explosions in Siberia. AdvertisementMore exploding craters to comeSiberia will likely have more explosive craters in the coming years as global temperatures continue to warm. It's unclear exactly how much methane these explosions release, but in the grand scheme of climate change, they're a small matter.

AdvertisementJoe Biden is taking last-minute measures to support Ukraine before leaving things to Donald Trump. He finally let Ukraine use US missiles to strike inside Russia and approved anti-personnel mines. These moves appear aimed at changing the war before Trump — who seems to want most to end the conflict as soon as possible — takes office. Biden, whose administration has sent billions of dollars in weaponry to Ukraine, recently lifted long-held restrictions on Kyiv's use of American-made longer-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia. And during a press briefing that same day, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the Biden administration moved to forgive about $4.7 billion in US loans to Ukraine.

Citi's Atif Malik lifted the firm's price target to $175 and opened a positive catalyst ahead of the consumer electronics show in January. Wells Fargo's Aaron Rakers moved to a $185 price target, reflecting 27% upside from Wednesday's close. Meanwhile, JPMorgan's Harlan Sur lifted his price target to $170 a share, saying that margins should improve toward the mid-70s range in the second half of 2025 as Nvidia streamlines costs. AdvertisementThe DOJ has asked the judge in its antitrust case against Google to force the tech giant to sell Chrome, its massively popular browser. In August, a judge ruled Google violated antitrust laws and acted as a monopoly when it came to its search engine. Google will have a chance to respond next month with its own plan before the judge makes a ruling next year. That makes it a powerful distribution arm for Google since Chrome's default search engine is … Google. And Apple was making at least $20 billion a year by defaulting to Google Search .

Former billionaire investor Sung Kook "Bill" Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant's lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. Hwang had asked for no prison, forfeiture or restitution, and to remain free on bail while he appealed his conviction. James said his low risk of committing more crimes meant a lengthy prison term served no purpose.

A key opportunity lies in everyday scenarios that often go wrong, eroding your mental strength versus building it up. Don't underestimate the negative impact that landing in the "poorly" column here can have on your life and career. "Bad" events, emotions, information, and feedback are more influential than "good" ones, research shows. Events involving negative emotions, for example, are four times more likely to be remembered than those involving positive emotions. If the person offering feedback truly wants you to get better, and you do too, you can work toward that goal together.
