WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in Wisconsin are threatening to impeach a recently elected state Supreme Court justice and raised the possibility of doing the same to the state’s election director. A Georgia Republican called for impeaching the Fulton County prosecutor who brought racketeering charges against former President Donald Trump. None of the targets met the bar traditionally set for impeachment — credible allegations of committing a crime while in office. Over the past two years, Republicans also have sought to pry Democrats and nonpartisan executives from office through recalls, legislative maneuvers and forced removals, even when no allegations of wrongdoing have surfaced. They’re upset with her over a legal settlement as voting began in 2020 that eased some rules for mailed ballots during the COVID-19 pandemic beyond what state law permitted.

Baron’s book comes at a perilous moment for American democracy and the news media tasked with covering its erosion. I think the coverage of the latest chaos has been very good, based on what I’ve read. The party is proving to be ungovernable, and that is wreaking havoc on the country as a whole. I’d like to see substantially more coverage of what a second Trump administration would do upon taking office. If news organizations believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy and the country’s framework of government, should they remain totally neutral in covering his candidacy?

Long US shutdown is avoidable but seems inevitable

Their requests are so extreme that the measures stand no chance of passing in the Democratic-controlled Senate, which is required to avoid a shutdown. While it could be either avoidable or short-lived, a longer shuttering of the U.S. government seems inevitable. Both chambers of the U.S. legislative branch are making last-ditch efforts to dodge a shutdown before the Sunday deadline. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Sunday she opposes the budget’s $300 million charge for training Ukrainian troops – that amounts to 0.02% of the total $1.5 trillion budget. The last stoppage, which lasted a record seven weeks between 2018 and 2019, was only solved through compromise between House Democrats and Senate Republicans.

When David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, asked for special counsel status, the Justice Department says Mr. Garland approved his request quickly. A widely respected federal judge before becoming attorney general, Mr. Garland has become a favorite target of House Republicans after the Justice Department launched investigations that resulted in felony charges against former President Donald J. Trump. At the heart of the issue are assurances Mr. Weiss and Mr. Garland have given to lawmakers that Mr. Weiss had ultimate authority over the Hunter Biden case and when and where to bring charges. But they have vouched generally for the statements about Mr. Weiss’ limited authority, describing a more nuanced scenario in which Mr. Weiss had sought to partner with prosecutors in Washington, D.C., and California, only to be rebuffed, causing him to try a different approach. When Mr. Weiss eventually asked for special counsel status, the Justice Department says Mr. Garland approved his request quickly.

In a warning to other nations over “shady” cooperation with Russia, the Ukrainian president also invoked the death of Russian Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin last month. A protester holds a portrait of Mahsa Amini during a demonstration in support of Amini, a young Iranian woman who died after being arrested in Tehran by the Islamic Republic's morality police, on Istiklal avenue in Istanbul on Sept. 20, 2022. Roughly one year ago, the death of a young Kurdish Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini in police custody lit the fuse that would set off months of protests that rocked Iran and its hardline government, creating the greatest challenge to its rule in decades. Amini, just 22 years old, was arrested for allegedly improperly wearing her hijab, the headscarf women are required to wear under Iran's highly conservative Islamic Republic. Iranian authorities claimed no wrongdoing and said Amini died of a heart attack; but her family, and masses of Iranians, accused the government of a cover-up. The protests spread across the country and evolved from being focused on women's rights to demanding the downfall of the entire Iranian regime.

The House returns this week from a lengthy August recess to a jam-packed September, with an end-of-month deadline to avert a government shutdown quickly approaching, foisting intense pressure upon House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. With just one of 12 spending bills passed through the House, little time remains to take action to keep the government fully functional by the Sept. 30 deadline. And should McCarthy look to Democrats to sidestep conservative demands, some have warned that they’ll bring up a vote for his ouster. Instead, some suggest that launching a Biden impeachment inquiry is McCarthy’s only true bargaining chip with those on the right. And to complicate matters further, the two chambers have marked up the spending bills at different levels, making reconciling the legislation all the more difficult.

To start, Congress faces a deadline to fund the government by the end of the month, or risk a potentially devastating federal shutdown. But starting a formal impeachment inquiry into Biden could help to appease Republican allies of Trump, who has emerged as the GOP frontrunner to confront Biden in the 2024 election for the White House. Woodhouse is now a senior adviser to the Congressional Integrity Project, which is preparing to criticize Republicans over the Biden impeachment. While the shutdown is the more pressing problem for McCarthy, the Biden impeachment inquiry is his bigger political gamble. McCarthy has signaled an impeachment inquiry is coming.

As central banks pile up gold reserves, investors are also accumulating the precious metal, JPMorgan reports. But its uncertain the central bank momentum will last, with buy ups normalizing last quarter. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, foreign central banks have added to their gold reserves in an effort to be less dependent on the US dollar. However, this could have been due to turmoil in Turkey's local gold market, causing its central bank to increase sales. Central bank demand has driven the commodity's price beyond what would be suggested by real 10-year Treasury yields.

The Senate returns Tuesday from a month-long recess as Congress gears up for a rocky September with a whole host of to-dos – including averting a government shutdown – before the fiscal year’s end. Accordingly, congressional leaders have made clear that a stop-gap measure to keep the government funded will be necessary. But even without the demands on the CR, reconciling the House and Senate's spending bills more broadly is expected to be a heavy lift this month, and perhaps beyond. Even so, some Senate Republicans were quick to come to McConnell’s defense. But questions about the leader’s health are expected to run in the background this week as the Senate gets to work on a number of priorities.

Export control laws restrict companies from sharing sensitive information and technology with certain individuals from other countries. Rebecca Bernhard, a Minneapolis-based labor lawyer who represents companies, said employers subject to export control laws often ignore the ban on citizenship-based bias in the federal Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), exposing them to legal action. Out of more than 10,000 hires, SpaceX only hired one asylee during that period, according to the lawsuit. The DOJ did not directly cite its guidance in the SpaceX lawsuit, but used nearly identical language to describe the company's alleged violations. "Export control laws and regulations do not prohibit or restrict employers from hiring asylees and refugees; those laws treat asylees and refugees just like U.S. citizens," the department said.
