YouTube will remove cancer treatment misinformation
  + stars: | 2023-08-15 | by ( Ashley Capoot | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
YouTube on Tuesday announced a new policy for combatting medical misinformation on the video-sharing platform, according to a blog post. In doing so, YouTube will remove content that contradicts well-established guidance from health officials about topics such as Covid-19, reproductive health, cancer and harmful substances, among others. YouTube said it will determine whether a condition fits within its new medical policy by assessing whether it's a high public health risk that's often prone to misinformation. This means content that discourages effective treatment or promotes unproven treatment will be removed, according to the blog post. For instance, if a political candidate disputes official health guidance or a public hearing takes place that includes inaccurate information, YouTube may not remove it.

Under Mr. Modi’s government, the state monopoly on violence is being surrendered to extremists and vigilantes. The targeting of minorities — particularly Muslims — by right-wing Hindu extremists is now a way of life in many states. A similar drive in neighboring Assam state targeting Muslims has already reportedly disenfranchised nearly two million people. Those were Meitei men in the horrific 26-second video, sexually assaulting two Kuki women. Many similar attacks on Kuki women have been reported.

I visited the Macy's flagship store in New York City and tried on its new "On 34th" private label. The store appeared to be severely understaffed — no one helped me get a dressing room or at the register. Get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in business, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley — delivered daily. "Macy's has a real problem with merchandising, both in terms of buying product, allocating product, and displaying product in a compelling way in its stores," retail analyst Neil Saunders told Insider. Saunders told Insider he's visited more than 50 Macy's stores across the country this year.

A commotion sounded at the entrance of the building, and a shout went up. Soldiers carried in two men on stretchers, one his lined face taut in a grimace, a third, with bloodstained pants, following behind. Within seconds the men were lifted onto operating tables and medics swarmed in, cutting off bloody clothes, hooking up drips, talking to the men in low voices. “Brother, you will make it,” the third soldier, Batya, called out to his friend with a chest wound. “Hold on, we have more to do.”Wounded just 40 minutes earlier on Ukraine’s southern front in the Zaporizhzhia region, the soldiers from the 110th Brigade had arrived at a stabilization point, one of a dozen medical stations set up by the Ukrainian Army within a few miles of the front line to ensure critical, lifesaving care.

Dollar General cuts prices on some items to $0.01 in preparation for removing them from inventory. And shoppers dedicated to the art of sifting through the merchandise have developed a playbook for finding the best penny items. Another tip: "Don't ask employees about penny items," lest they pull them from the shelves, one TikTok video tells penny shoppers. But for Dollar General employees, penny items can be a liability. In a scathing 2021 report, the inspector general for the Justice Department found that the F.B.I. initially botched the investigation, allowing Mr. Nassar to assault more young women. Mr. Nassar was convicted on federal charges in 2017. A federal judge ordered that sentence to run concurrently and remanded him to federal custody. Last year, 13 female athletes who were sexually assaulted by Mr. Nassar each sought $10 million from the F.B.I., claiming agents mishandled the investigation, allowing him to continue abusing more victims.

Women’s labor force participation has rebounded from the pandemic “she-cession” and returned to its pre-pandemic form of making progressively historic labor market gains. By February of 2020, the labor force participation rate for prime working-age women was 77% — just shy of the record 77.3% set during the dot-com era, BLS data shows. The pandemic walloped the leisure and hospitality and education and health services sectors, where women make up the majority of the workforce. The economic evolution and recovery from the pandemic helped accelerate favorable drivers for women to enter the workforce. Separately, new research shows that although women were outnumbered by men in the US workforce, women could be disproportionately affected by businesses’ adoption of generative AI: One recent analysis estimates that 79% of working women (nearly 59 million) are in occupations susceptible to disruption and automation.

Ms. Sewell, 51, is walking away from a department of 36,000 uniformed officers that saw the rate of major crimes like murders and shootings fall during her tenure. She added about 30 detectives to a sex-crimes unit that for years had been understaffed and overworked. Now, officers, department watchdogs and community leaders are trying to figure out what comes next. Perhaps the most daunting task will be serving a mayor — himself a former police captain — whose administration is believed to have meddled so much that Ms. Sewell felt she had to quit. While previous commissioners said they had to deal with some level of micromanagement, they said they were typically allowed to pick their own teams and rarely had to get approval for discretionary promotions.

It was Christmas in May in the back room of a Michigan Dollar General last year. The clutter is one of the reasons that the Department of Labor labeled Dollar General a "severe violator" in March. In January, a Dollar General clerk was charged with manslaughter after police said he shot and killed an armed robber. Despite the problems on the ground, Dollar General continues to earn positive feedback from analysts on Wall Street. Do you work or shop at a Dollar General store or have a story to share?

Kaczynski Died by Suicide in Prison, Sources Say
  + stars: | 2023-06-10 | by ( Glenn Thrush | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Theodore J. Kaczynski, the “Unabomber,” who killed three people and injured 23 in a bombing spree stretching from 1978 to 1995, died by suicide at a federal prison medical center in North Carolina early Saturday, according to three people familiar with the situation. Emergency workers were called to Mr. Kaczynski’s cell at 12:23 a.m. at the Federal Medical Center, Butner, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Attempts to revive him in the prison and in an ambulance were unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, officials said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in North Carolina confirmed in an email that it conducts autopsies of deaths at the federal medical center in Butner, but offered no timetable for when one might be completed for Mr. Kaczynski. The circumstances of his suicide are unclear, and it is uncertain whether prison officials could have done more to ensure his safety.

Chili's has hired staff to bus tables and streamlined preparation, according to the New York Times. Some have found it at Chili's, according to the New York Times. In the early years of the pandemic, Chili's experimented with technology, such as a robot server, to handle the labor shortage and increase efficiency. "When you go out to eat you want to be waited on, and that hasn't changed," Hochman told the Times. Jasmine Owens, a longtime bartender at a Chili's outside of Atlanta, told the Times that customers would scream and toss their food during the pandemic.

Dollar General stores have been cited by OSHA and local authorities for safety hazards for years. OSHA has called Dollar General a "severe violator"David Williams, an employee at a Dollar General store, said he and his colleagues at other locations go to work scared of the dangers that they will encounter there. Safety hazards at Dollar General stores have also gotten the attention of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, which has proposed fines on Dollar General of $21 million since 2017. The company's violations are severe and frequent enough that Dollar General earned a "severe violator" designation from OSHA in March. The proposal's passage marks a win for Dollar General workers, Mary Beth Gallagher, director of engagement at Domini Impact Investments, said in a statement.

Since 2014, there have been 49 people killed and 172 people injured at Dollar General stores, according to data from non-profit group Gun Violence Archive. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited unsafe conditions at dozens of Dollar General stores in recent years. As New York City’s 14 miles of public beaches open for Memorial Day weekend, the city is confronting its worst lifeguard shortage on record — something officials say is partly the result of a bitter fight between the city and the little-known but extraordinarily powerful unions that represent lifeguards. Millions of New Yorkers are facing the prospect of partial beach closures and limited access to pools when they open next month. Parks Department officials say they currently have fewer than 500 lifeguards ready to work, roughly a third of the number they say is needed to fully staff beaches and pools. The lifeguard shortage, which also stems from perennial issues like low salaries, a difficult qualifying test and a pandemic-induced slowdown of the lifeguard pipeline, follows months of off-season maneuvering between city officials and an obscure pair of lifeguard locals. It is an intractable and bizarre union beef that stands out even in a city rife with them and one that has left the city — locked in collective bargaining negotiations with union officials to reach a new contract — blaming the unions for leaving key swimming spots understaffed.
Walmart started using Workplace, a Meta-designed social-media app, in 2017. "Most of the posts I see on Workplace are just memes making fun of management and corporate," a Walmart employee from Minnesota said. On Walmart's Workplace site, the first photo was captioned "using workplace for work-related posts," and the second photo said "using workplace for memes." Just as on Facebook, users have Workplace feeds where they see what other Walmart workers post, with their names attached. The Walmart employee from Michigan said he was "surprised at first" that workers would share memes on Workplace without being anonymous.
"It's just a really precarious time of year for airline employees," Anthony Cataldo, a flight attendant for American Airlines with 33 years' experience, told Insider. Such predictions have left some airline workers anxious about carrying the industry through what could be a record-breaking travel season, four mainline pilots and flight attendants told Insider. Compared to last summer, airline staffing levels have largely improved, with Delta and United hiring thousands of new employees this year. The Southwest and American Airlines pilot unions both voted to authorize a strike this month. Air traffic control remains understaffedAs of April, the crowded airspace around New York City had 129 certified air traffic controllers — just over half of the staffing target of 226 — with 67 air traffic controllers in training, according to aviation firm Rinaldi Consultants.
Current and former employees who spoke to Insider say clutter at Dollar General stores has gotten worse over the last few years.
