Analysts said the probe could slow capacity expansion and the capital spending cycle of China's battery suppliers, although the move should not pose a big downside risk for Chinese EVs. Hong Kong shares of market leader BYD fell more than 3%. Nio and Geely declined to comment on the EU probe, while BYD, Xpeng and SAIC did not respond to requests for comment. GROWING MARKET SHAREEU officials believe Chinese EVs are undercutting the prices of local models by about 20% in the European market, piling pressure on European automakers to produce lower-cost electric vehicles. It accounted for 40.25% of EV exports from China between January and April 2023, up from 36.5% in 2022.

President Biden challenged his Republican opponents on Thursday in their area of political strength, arguing that he has done a better job of managing the economy than former President Donald J. Trump did and accusing his predecessor’s congressional allies of undercutting working-class Americans. While Mr. Trump has long made his stewardship of the economy his most salient bragging point, Mr. Biden declared that his “Bidenomics” program had done more to help everyday Americans make a living than what he termed “MAGAnomics” ever did. He framed the argument in terms of the fall’s coming budget battles, but it also represented a preview of next year’s campaign. “They have a very different vision for America,” Mr. Biden said in a speech at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Md., just outside the nation’s capital, where he held up a copy of budget plans by House Republicans. “Their plan, MAGAnomics, is more extreme than anything America has ever seen before.”Mr. Biden trained his criticism on Republicans who are threatening to shut down the federal government if their plans are not enacted.

Indian artist Jagjot Singh Rubal gives final touches to an oil painting of U.S. President Joe Biden, at his workshop in Amritsar on September 5, 2023, ahead of the two-day G20 summit in New Delhi. The pair's absence has sparked fears that a communique binding member states may not be issued at the end of a G20 leaders' summit — undercutting India's clout and diminishing his domestic messaging. At a pre-summit press conference Friday, India's G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant said the final declaration "is almost ready." In their joint statement after their Friday bilateral meeting, Biden and Modi "reaffirmed their commitment to the G20." Despite recently traveling to South Africa for a BRICS meeting, Xi has rarely traveled abroad.

Ambivalent during early internal debate, Kavanaugh eventually gave Roberts enough confidence that he could write an opinion for a majority. The state’s approach would have wholly undercut the history and purpose of the landmark Voting Rights Act, passed at the height of the Civil Rights movement to try to end race discrimination. Senior conservative Thomas, who has been unyielding in his rejection of race-based practices, was ready to write a far-reaching opinion against the court’s Voting Rights Act precedent for redistricting. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh and Roberts came together, ensuring the chief a five-justice majority for the robust endorsement of Voting Rights Act remedies when states discriminate in redistricting. The Alabama redistricting case shook out differently as Kavanaugh signed a significant portion of Roberts’ opinion.

Biden's Labor Day prediction that the union would not strike against Detroit's automakers ahead of a Sept. 14 contract deadline was soundly rejected by UAW President Shawn Fain. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden's comments about the UAW over Labor Day was him being "an optimistic person." The White House has tried to play a role in several recent large-scale union contract negotiations involving rail workers and West Coast port workers. Trump won Michigan in 2016, helping propel him to the White House; Biden beat him by 154,000 votes in Michigan in 2020. Around half a million more threatened strikes in the first half of 2023, estimates from national labor unions show.

The Chinese auto industry has been booming in recent years. Chinese EV companies are expected to outsell foreign brands there, including Ford, GM, and others, for the first time this year. This is worrying executives at some major legacy auto companies, according to several reports out of the Munich auto show. Consulting firm KPMG estimates Chinese companies could account for 15% of market share in Europe within just two years. Chinese EV companies also have an edge against rivals in producing EVs at bigger scale and lower costs, a crucial measure of any electric car companies' future success.

AdvertisementAdvertisementPublisher-focused adtech firms that traditionally work with The Trade Desk, which helps advertisers buy digital ads, are now in competition with it. The Trade Desk has been aggressively building products that will undercut the business of publisher-focused adtech companies, or "supply-side platforms," according to industry insiders. The Trade Desk has not traditionally competed with SSPs, which help publishers of online content price their ad inventory and make it available to buy. "By saying this publicly, The Trade Desk is throwing down the gauntlet." He added that other ad-buying platforms besides The Trade Desk have direct deals with publishers, similar to OpenPath.

Navarro, Trump’s one-time trade adviser, testified Monday in his defense during a key pre-trial hearing in his case. But during the nearly three-hour hearing before US District Judge Amit P. Mehta in Washington, DC, the judge appeared highly skeptical of Navarro’s testimony, noting it’s from one side of the conversation. “I don’t think anyone would disagree that we wish there was more here from President Trump,” Woodward told Mehta. The judge said he would make a decision later this week on whether Navarro’s testimony could be used in his trial next month. “We would like, at the very least, to leave the record open” so Harrington can submit her testimony, Woodward told Mehta.

The Trade Desk will start undercutting the fees publisher adtech firms tack on to digital ads. The adtech used by publishers often inaccurately prices their inventory, said a Trade Desk exec. Adtech firm The Trade Desk is about to execute a plan to lower the price advertisers pay for digital ads. The Trade Desk operates software called a "demand-side platform" that advertisers use to buy ads across the internet. While other DSPs occasionally send low-ball bids, publishers might be more willing to look at The Trade Desk's bids due to the large amount of advertisers using its platform.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump addresses The Faith and Freedom Coalition's 2023 "Road to Majority" conference in Washington, U.S., June 24, 2023. Here is a look at the federal charges and how Trump might defend himself. Prosecutors will need to prove Trump specifically intended to deprive voters of the right to a fair election. Here, Trump’s assertion that he truly believed the election was stolen could be useful to his defense. But he would once again need to risk taking the stand to convince jurors he was acting in good faith, experts said.

Like many, they home in on the outsized drop in used-car prices - one of the key aggravators of 'core' inflation that at 4.8% is still well above the now sub-3% headline CPI rate. And it's the latter that homes in on the prospect of an inflation undershoot. Lawmakers tussle over GOP efforts to thwart ESG investing

WASHINGTON — House lawmakers clashed Wednesday over federally mandated environmental, social and governance disclosure requirements for companies rolled out amid concerns over growing climate disasters. The GOP majority committee members decried the disclosure rules as part of a broader push to discourage ESG investing nationwide. Democrats defended them as necessary to promote responsible investing to reduce inequities and curb climate change. "These politically motivated regulations not only discouraged private companies from going public but also hinder the competitiveness of American public companies." Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, meanwhile, criticized Republicans' attempts to undermine what she called the federal government's responsibility to hold public companies accountable for ESG.

World's biggest gallium buyer says clients stockpiling

FRANKFURT, July 11 (Reuters) - China's planned export controls on gallium have caused frantic stockpiling of speciality semiconductor wafers made from the metal, according to the world's largest gallium buyer. Freiberger Compound Materials relies almost entirely on Chinese suppliers for its gallium needs to make wafers that go into mobile phone radio signal amplifiers and optical electronics. Chinese gallium companies have driven most rivals elsewhere out of the market by undercutting them on price over the last decade. Harz said his Chinese suppliers were providing authorities with data needed to obtain export licences. Harz does not believe that China will disrupt gallium trade flows over the next few years because that would quickly damage its own electronics industry.

Brazilian corn exports are expected to flood the global marketplace beginning in July and into the U.S. autumn harvest. China's overall corn imports are down about 10% this year, according to customs data, as buyers there await ample supplies of cheap Brazilian corn in the coming months. Total U.S. corn export sales in April and May were the lowest in at least 22 years, according to weekly USDA export sales data. The period included three weeks in which more purchases were canceled than booked, and the two worst weeks of U.S. corn exports on record. Rapid growth in Brazilian corn production offset loss of much of the corn exports from Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.

July 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's administration on Friday is expected to propose a new regulation cracking down on short-term health insurance plans, Politico reported, citing five Democrats with knowledge of the matter. A White House official told Politico on Thursday that Biden plans to announce major actions to lower costs and crack down on junk fees. The Department of Health and Human Services in 2018 extended the availability of short-term health insurance plans to millions of Americans in another Trump administration move aimed at undercutting the requirements of Obamacare. Such plans, previously available only for periods of three months or less, were extended for up to 12 months and could be renewed. The short duration plans did not include benefits provided under Obamacare, including maternity coverage and guarantee of insurance regardless of health.

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - A lack of data on electric vehicle (EV) batteries continues to challenge insurers who are forced to scrap EVs after mild accidents, potentially undermining EV adoption, Thatcham Research said on Wednesday. Adrian Watson, Thatcham's head of engineering research, said in an ideal world insurers could make informed decisions about whether to repair EVs or write it off based on access to data on its state of health after an accident. "The diagnostics we have do not enable you to really know what the status of the battery is." Due to their potential fire risk, damaged EVs awaiting repair must be stored outside at least 15 metres (49 ft) from other objects. An outside facility for 100 fossil-fuel cars today would have space to safely quarantine just two EVs, Thatcham said.

While quiet quitting is often regarded as a personal rejection of the hustle culture, some workers are no longer keeping discontentment on the down-low — instead, they are engaging in "loud quitting." Almost 1 in 5, or 18%, of global employees are loudly quitting or actively disengaged, according to a new report from Gallup of more than 120,000 global employees. What loud quitting means for companiesLoud quitting can signal "major risks" in an organization that should not be ignored, Gallup said. Quiet or loud quitting employees would also switch jobs for less pay, compared to engaged employees who require a 31% pay increase to consider a job switch, according to Gallup's analysis. "Quiet quitting employees are your organization's low-hanging fruit for productivity gains.

Why not assume that the chances of conviction and a serious sentence are small and turn your attention to other matters of national significance?

His parents soon started exploring a lawsuit against Merck, the developer of the blockbuster asthma and allergy drug, Singulair, along with the manufacturer of the generic version their son took. That meant Merck had written the warning label, with federal approval, on the generic version of Singulair that Nicholas England took. But his parents couldn’t sue Merck, either, because their son had never taken its name-brand version of Singulair. The generic drug manufacturer that made the pills England took, Teva Pharmaceuticals, did not respond to inquiries. Since Merck’s patent on Singulair expired in 2012, major generic drug manufacturers have sold millions of prescriptions under the drug’s scientific name, montelukast.

Nearly 1 in 5 employees worldwide are "loud quitting" at their jobs, a new Gallup report says. Here's what loud quitting looks like in the workplace. Between the 18% of employees loud quitting and the 59% quiet quitting, Gallup estimates low employee engagement costs the global economy $8.8 trillion and accounts for 9% of global GDP. Quiet quitting refers to doing your job just as advertised, not going above and beyond. "The cause of this loud quitting, or even quiet quitting, is really primarily in how people are managed," he said.

Republicans have argued that Twitter had a liberal bias and was quick to censor conservatives. Records obtained by WaPo show how Twitter's management hesitated to ban Trump after Jan. 6, 2021. Twitter ultimately decided to ban Trump on January 8, 2021, following in the footsteps of other social media platforms. However, the safety policy team reassessed their conclusion after internal lawyers, who advised the safety policy team, argued the tweet could have violated Twitter's rules around "glorification of violence," the document said, according to the Post. The lawyers argued that the phrase "American Patriots" could be referring to the rioters who stormed the Capitol, which could then violate Twitter's policy.
