A sharply lower number might be seen by markets as giving confidence to the Federal Reserve that its work is done. Consumer inflation data on Wednesday - the most important scheduled release of the week - did little to change expectations the Fed will not rates interest rates at next week's meeting. Thursday's main event globally is the ECB rate decision. Ahead of the decision the euro was up a touch against the dollar, but near a three month low at $1.0739. Chinese auto makers' shares fell on the news of the European probe, as did European car makers after the Chinese response.

Aid was trickling into eastern Libya on Wednesday, where more than 5,000 people have died in recent days from catastrophic flooding. But with roads and bridges damaged and cut off, access to the hardest-hit city of Derna on the Mediterranean coast remained a major hurdle to bringing in help, according to international aid groups. Thousands of people are believed to still be missing, meaning the death toll was likely to rise further in the hours and days ahead. The flooding hit after heavy rains burst through two dams near Derna, a city of nearly 100,000 people. The Derna City Council has called for the opening of a maritime passageway to the city and for urgent international intervention.

Economists and investors were closely watching the report, which is the last major data release the Fed will receive before its Sept. 19-20 policy meeting. Fed officials have already raised interest rates to a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent, up sharply from near-zero as recently as March 2022. Policymakers at the Fed want to avoid raising rates by so much that the delayed effects add up to tank economic growth. But they also want to avoid doing too little and allowing inflation to become a lasting feature of the American economy. Central bankers will release a fresh set of economic projections following their meeting next week.

Data is trickling in on a new COVID-19 strain nicknamed “pirola,” giving researchers a wider picture of what the variant could mean for the U.S. and the world. Van Kerkhove said that the global COVID-19 variant picture is complex, and that while BA.2.86 is spreading, it is not currently outcompeting other strains. “It is quite a complex picture globally in terms of how these variants behave because different variants circulate in different countries at different times.”Will Vaccines Work on Pirola? Moderna and Pfizer have announced that early data indicates that their updated vaccines do produce an immune response against BA.2.86. "These results demonstrate that our updated COVID-19 vaccine generates a strong human immune response against the highly mutated BA.2.86 variant.

“Inflation is going the right way,” said Gennadiy Goldberg, a rates strategist at TD Securities. Slower rent increases should help to weigh down overall inflation for at least the next year, several economists said. The world’s second-largest economy is growing much more slowly than expected after reopening from pandemic lockdowns. And more generally, Fed policy should help to pull down inflation in the months to come. The central bank has raised interest rates to a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent over the past year and a half.

In 2021, along a two-lane highway in Mandan, N.D., a giant billboard showing masked figures in clothing that was inspired by both Indigenous tradition and science fiction declared: “WE SURVIVE YOU.” Its artist, Cannupa Hanska Luger, is one of 17,000 members enrolled in the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nations today. In 2007, the Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore photographed an Indigenous woman with a “fringe” of blood (represented by red string) trickling from a diagonal scar across her back. “To me it is a wound that is on the mend,” Belmore has said. “She will get up and go on, but she will carry that mark with her.”Over the years, the Kalaaleq artist Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory has performed Greenlandic mask dances, or uaajeerneq, for audiences around the world: “It is a fearsome, sexy clown act,” she’s written, “that was handed down to me from my mother and other Inuit activist artists from Greenland’s movement to self-government in the 1970s.”

Inflation has begun to cool meaningfully, but unemployment remains historically low at 3.6 percent and hiring has been robust. Consumers continue to spend at a solid pace and are helping to boost overall growth, based on strong gross domestic product data released on Thursday. Mr. Powell said that while he was not yet ready to use the term “optimism,” he saw a possible pathway to a relatively painless slowdown. Those rate moves are trickling through the economy, making it more expensive to buy cars and houses on borrowed money and making it pricier for businesses to take out loans. “The prevailing consensus right before things went downhill in 2007, 2000 and 1990 was for a soft landing,” said Gennadiy Goldberg, a rates strategist at TD Securities.

‘Boys Love’ genre finds new audiences in South Korea

Not only was the TV series part of a genre — Boys’ Love, or BL for short — that was lesser-known in South Korea, it depicted something rarely seen on the country’s screens: same-sex romance. “Semantic Error,” which was based on a popular web novel of the same name, tells the story of two male college students who fall in love. And the risk paid off: “Semantic Error” became a hit upon its release in 2022. There are currently more than 20 BL shows being produced in South Korea. The on-screen adaptation of "Semantic Error" stars Park Seo-ham as Jang Jae-young and Jaechan as Chu Sang-woo.

Washington, DC CNN —Silicon Valley Bank failed because regulators were far too slow to take action, San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Mary Daly said Monday in her first extended remarks about the collapse. SVB operated in Daly’s district before the regional bank’s stunningly rapid failure in March, but she noted she doesn’t have a supervising role. Fed officials try to keep inflation climbing at a pace of 2 percent a year, but its rise has been much more rapid than that since early 2021. But 15 months into their fight to wrestle inflation lower, Fed officials want to give themselves more time to assess how their policy is playing out in the economy. Central bankers voted unanimously on the decision to leave interest rates unchanged. Just because Fed officials are moving into a new and more patient stage of their war against rapid price increases does not mean that they are giving up on their push to cool inflation. Central bankers have already moved rates up notably, to about 5.1 percent, and those changes are still trickling through and weighing on the economy.

She spoke following a keynote presentation in San Francisco during which Su showed an AI system on the MI300X chip writing a poem about the city. "The more memory that you have, the larger the set of models" the chip can handle, Su said. But unlike past presentations where AMD has talked up a major customer for a new chip, AMD did not say who will adopt the MI300X or a smaller version called the MI300A. Nvidia, whose shares have surged 170% so far this year, dominates the AI computing market with a market share of 80% to 95%, according to analysts. Aside from the AI market, AMD said it has started shipping high volumes of a general purpose central processor chip called "Bergamo" to companies such as Meta Platforms (META.O).
