There, I Said It,” by Pamela Paul (column, Jan. 26):Ms. Paul has no sense of humor. It is a slight that Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie did not get Oscar nominations for best director and best actress. “Barbie” is not a “bad” movie, but you need a sense of humor to appreciate it. CNN —A historic ruling by the United Nations’ top court in a genocide case against Israel on Friday was welcomed by the three main parties it involved: Israel, South Africa and the Palestinians. The International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands, ordered Israel to “take all measures” to prevent genocide in Gaza after South Africa accused Israel of violating international laws on genocide in its war in the territory. It rejected Israel’s request for the case to be thrown out, but it also stopped short of ordering Israel to halt the war as South Africa has asked. “I would have wanted a ceasefire,” said South African foreign minister Naledi Pandor after the ruling in The Hague. Mohammed el-Kurd, a Palestinian activist from Jerusalem, said the ICJ failed on South Africa’s “most important request” to suspend the military operations.

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Officers in a Detroit suburb found a furry surprise as they patted down a theft suspect: A tiny blue-eyed puppy, zipped inside the man’s jacket pocket. Roseville police discovered the blue pit bull on Jan. 16 while arresting a man accused of stealing money from a bank customer. The palm-sized female, about 5 weeks old, was taken to an animal shelter, where staff nicknamed her Bandit until they learned her name is Frappy, according to Jeff Randazzo, Macomb County’s chief animal control officer. Frappy's owner is charged with larceny from a person, accused of stealing the customer's bag containing about $5,200. He was arrested hours later, and his attorney, Robbie Lang, doesn't believe the dog was in his pocket at the time of the alleged theft.

CNN —It’s Oscars season and “Barbie” is dominating the discourse. But here’s the thing; “Barbie” is neither smart enough nor interesting enough to be inspiring this level of uproar. It’s also important to remember that “Barbie” has most certainly not been ignored by the Academy Awards’ members. It has eight nominations – which is far more than many of 2023’s other women-directed films got. While “Barbie” achieved cultural phenomenon status last year, other films that took a more complicated approach to womanhood were shut out of the Oscars and the mainstream awards circuit completely.

Hillary Clinton reacted to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie getting snubbed at the 2024 Oscar nominations. Gerwig and Robbie weren't nominated for best director and best actress for "Barbie." "Greta & Margot," Clinton wrote in a text post on both X and Instagram, set against a bright-pink background. AdvertisementAnd to refresh on what went down eight long years ago in the 2016 American presidential election, Clinton won the popular vote by a a few million over Republican candidate Donald Trump. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Ryan Gosling said. Her first three films as a solo director — “Lady Bird,”“Little Women” and “Barbie” — have all been nominated for best picture. One likely factor: the increasingly international composition of the film academy. After Ben Affleck went unnominated for directing 2012's “Argo,” voters rallied around his movie, ultimately handing Affleck the Oscar for best picture. Whether the same effect could follow “Barbie" will be one of the biggest questions leading up the Academy Awards.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A look at notable facts, figures and curiosities from Tuesday's nominations for the 96th Academy Awards, which saw “Oppenheimer” lead with 13 Oscar nominations, with “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” also running up big numbers. Like her “Nyad” co-star Annette Bening, she got her fifth Oscar nomination for the based-on-a-true-story swimming drama from Netflix, and it's Foster's first in 29 years. Williams has been nominated a staggering 54 times — 49 for original score and five for original song, making him the most nominated living person. MORE 2024 OSCAR FACTS AND FIGURESThe best actor category includes three first-time Oscar nominees: Domingo, Jeffrey Wright and Cillian Murphy. And speaking of best original song, no running of the recent Oscar numbers would be complete without a nod to Diane Warren.

Read previewMargot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were two of the most-discussed snubs of Tuesday's Oscar nominations. But another huge upset of the 96th Academy Award nods was the lack of recognition for "The Color Purple" remake. The Color Purple was going to be snubbed whether Taraji spoke out or not because a lot of the noms were voted on prior. Instead of negative press, "The Color Purple," among other contenders, was likely affected by different factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and its Christmas release. "By waiting until December to release 'The Color Purple,' they were late to the conversation," he added.

For example, Ryan Gosling received a best supporting actor nomination, but Margot Robbie was snubbed. These include a few pleasant surprises, like best picture and best supporting actress for America Ferrera, who delivers a moving feminist monologue at the movie's climax. But Ryan Gosling nabbed a nomination for best supporting actor as Ken, the heroine's sidekick who becomes obsessed with the power of patriarchy. Related storiesThis might feel like déjà vu for Gerwig, who was similarly snubbed for her direction of best picture nominee "Little Women" in 2020, despite the film being nominated for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best actress, best supporting actress, best original score, and best costume design. But Greta Gerwig not being among the five best director nominees for this year’s Oscars is one of the biggest shocks in recent memory. Here are some other major “snubs” and “surprises” from Oscar nomination morning. Gerwig was previously nominated for best director for “Lady Bird,” and missing out for “Little Woman” was even a snub. “The Super Mario Bros.” movie, the second highest grossing film of the year was completely shut out from nominations including animation. ‘SALTBURN’ GOES DOWN THE DRAINListen, we didn’t really think that Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” would make a big splash nominations morning, but it had been trending that way based on its popularity on Prime Video over the holidays.

Though “Oppenheimer” made an explosive showing when the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, plenty of other would-be contenders failed to launch. As your Projectionist, here’s my analysis of the morning’s biggest surprises and omissions. Greta Gerwig misses a directing nomination. With her billion-dollar blockbuster, “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig set a Hollywood record for the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman. But it did at least pull off a dark-horse supporting actress nod for America Ferrera alongside an expected supporting-actor nomination for Ryan Gosling.

When the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, the snubs of the two most prominent women involved in “Barbie” — the director, Greta Gerwig, and the lead actress, Margot Robbie — became the breakout story. The top-grossing film of 2023, passing the $1 billion mark worldwide, is based on the imagined life and times of the iconic Mattel doll. A cultural phenomenon on its own terms, “Barbie,” along with “Oppenheimer,” became half of an unusually thoughtful summer blockbuster duo released on the same day in July (“Barbenheimer”): nothing to sneeze at. “Let me see if I understand this: the Academy nominated ‘Barbie’ for Best Picture (eight nominations total) — a film about women being sidelined and rendered invisible in patriarchal structures — but not the woman who directed the film. Okay then,” read a viral X post by the writer Charlotte Clymer.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations Tuesday morning for the 96th annual Oscars, both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were dealt a shocking snub in the best director and best actress categories, respectively. It was nominated for best picture. The controversy prompted two of the film’s stars, Gosling and America Ferrera, to speak out and convey their dismay at the cold shoulder from the Academy. At last year’s awards ceremony, host Jimmy Kimmel even joked, “How does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed ‘Avatar’? What do they think he is, a woman?”There is empirical evidence that supports the notion women are overlooked by the Academy.

And on Tuesday, we’ll find out which movies and artists will have a chance at Academy Awards when the Oscar nominations are announced. Both films made strong showings last week when the acting, directing and producing guilds released their nominations, and spots for both on the best picture list are all but guaranteed. Double-Digit Nominations: I expect “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” and the historical-crime tale “Killers of the Flower Moon” to each score double-digit nominations. And besides a likely best picture nod, there could be ones for directing and screenplay as well. The Best Picture Outlook: The safest bets are “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” “The Holdovers” and “Poor Things” are secure, too.

CNN —Ryan Gosling is grateful for his Oscar nomination, but joined the chorus of people who question the omission of his costar Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig from their individual respective categories. Gosling was nominated on Tuesday in the supporting actor category for his portrayal of Mattel’s Ken doll in “Barbie,” last year’s biggest blockbuster, starring alongside Robbie’s titular Barbie. While Gerwig and Robbie were not recognized individually, they did each earn Oscar nominations this week. In his statement, Gosling also honored his costar America Ferrera, who earned a surprise supporting actress nod for her performance in the film. CNN —While there has been some head-scratching about some overlooked contenders who weren’t nominated for Oscars for the “Barbie” movie on Tuesday morning, America Ferrera’s wonderfully unexpected best supporting actress nod is certainly one to celebrate. “I’m stunned and so moved to be nominated among the brilliant artists who have done beautiful and important work this year,” Ferrera said in a statement sent to CNN later on Tuesday. Her statement continued, “I’m so proud to get to bring Latiné representation to this years Academy Awards, along with my fellow Latiné nominees. Courtesy of Warner Bros. But on a more disappointing (though not unexpected) note, only one of those women earned a nomination for best director. "Barbie," "Anatomy of a Fall," and "Past Lives" will all compete for best picture at the Oscars in March. The snubs for Greta Gerwig, who helmed the billion-dollar box-office hit "Barbie," and "Past Lives" director Celine Song are notable. Gerwig's first three solo films as a director — "Lady Bird", "Little Women," and "Barbie" — were all good enough to make the best picture cut. But to this day, only one has ever gotten her in the best director running.

“Barbie” (whose distributor shares a parent company with CNN) got nods for best picture, best supporting actress (America Ferrera) and best supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), among others. Think back to the movie moment where Writer Barbie (Alexandra Shipp) accepts the Nobel Prize in Barbieland with a concise speech: “Thanks. It’s worth noting that Robbie was nominated as a producer for “Barbie” and Gerwig was nominated for best adapted screenplay, but that doesn’t alter how enraging this all is. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. The ongoing trial concerns additional defamation damages for two statements Trump made in 2019, while he was president, disparaging Carroll by calling her dishonest and insulting her appearance. In her own world, Barbie can accomplish just about anything. But in the real world, “Barbie” was dealt a significant setback Tuesday morning: Though Greta Gerwig’s colorful comedy skewering the patriarchy was the biggest blockbuster of last year and set a record for the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman, Gerwig failed to receive an Oscar nomination for best director. Ryan Gosling, Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, criticized the academy’s vote even as he himself received an Oscar nomination. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius,” he said in a statement, referring to both Gerwig and Robbie, who missed out on a best actress nod. Still, comedies often struggle to win favor with the Oscars, and a female-led comedy has even more hurdles to overcome, as Robbie found.

The trial was delayed Monday for a juror COVID scare — and Tuesday is the New Hampshire primary. If the trial isn't delayed another day, as Trump's lawyers requested, he may lose his chance to take the stand.
