An F-16 fired an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile to take down a flying object over Lake Huron on Sunday. "On the fourth one, over Lake Huron, the first shot missed, the second shot hit," Milley said in response to a reporter's question, confirming earlier reports. "And in this case, the missile landed harmlessly in the water of Lake Huron. Sunday's operation marked the fourth instance in about a week in which a US Air Force fighter jet shot down a flying object over North American airspace. The general leading North American Aerospace Defense Command and US Northern Command offered an explanation on Sunday for why there has been a seemingly sudden increase in flying objects appearing over North American airspace.
Donald Trump launched a new attack on rumored 2024 rival Ron DeSantis. He shared an old picture that allegedly shows DeSantis partying with school pupils. "Here is Ron DeSanctimonious grooming high school girls with alcohol as a teacher," a caption on the user's post reads. In a New York Times article in 2022, former pupils at the school recalled DeSantis partying with seniors. The post Trump shared alludes to a far-right campaign to stoke opposition to LGBTQ education in classrooms by smearing teachers as "groomers", or pedophiles.

Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, the pair dreamed that they might play in the Super Bowl together - of course, in their childhood fantasy, they were playing on the same team. Their mother, Donna, has made clear she won't be picking sides, appearing on Monday at the Super Bowl media blitz in a combined Eagles-Chiefs jersey.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Sunday that laws criminalising LGBT people are a sin and an injustice because God loves and accompanies people with same-sex attraction. Persons with homosexual tendencies are children of God. Criminalising people with homosexual tendencies is an injustice," Francis said. He noted that the Catholic Church's catechism, or book of teachings, says same-sex attraction is not a sin but homosexual acts are. Francis mentioned his now-famous phase from soon after he became pope in 2013 that he could not judge people with same-sex tendencies who are seeking God.

According to The Associated Press, the balloon had been previously detected over South Carolina as it moved toward the Atlantic Ocean. Former President Trump claims he owns the audio rights to interviews conducted by Bob Woodward. But legal experts say it's unlikely a court will agree with Trump, who claims he's owed $50 million. "The case centers on Mr. Woodward's systematic usurpation, manipulation, and exploitation of audio of [former] President Trump," states the complaint, filed with a federal court in Florida. The audiobook didn't go on sale for another two years — after, Woodward says, he decided its release served the public interest. "Filing a lawsuit over publishing those interviews turns the First Amendment on its head."
[1/2] Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha campaigns as the PM candidate for the United Thai Nation Party (Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party) ahead of a general election this year in Bangkok, Thailand, January 9, 2023. REUTERS/Chalinee ThirasupaBANGKOK, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The mere mention of Thailand's ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra prompted Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to walk out of a news conference this week, irked by talk of the exiled political heavyweight's long-touted return. I don't like it," Prayuth said on Wednesday cutting off a reporter's question about Thaksin, before walking away from the podium and out of the venue. Paetongtarn, 36, last week declared her readiness to be prime minister with the Pheu Thai Party, which won most seats in the 2019 election but not enough to form a government. The decisions by Washington and Berlin come as the Western allies help Ukraine prepare for a possible spring counter-offensive to try to drive Russia out of territory it has seized. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said any Abrams shipments would be a waste of money as they "burn" like other tanks in Ukraine. The total cost of a single Abrams tanks can vary, and can be over $10 million per tanks when including training and sustainment. "I am certain that many experts understand the absurdity of this idea," the Kremlin's Peskov said about the Abrams tanks. "The United States was willing to make a significant commitment to assist them in making theirs," the source said.
The U.S. Treasury will suspend full funding of a federal retirement program, the latest in a string of actions it has taken to prevent default after the government hit its debt ceiling, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told congressional leaders Tuesday. The Treasury is taking so-called extraordinary measures to keep paying its bills after it breached its $31.4 trillion borrowing limit Thursday. Lawmakers are trying to strike a deal to lift the U.S. borrowing limit and prevent a first-ever default on U.S. debt. Some members of the new Republican House majority have pushed to tie spending cuts to an increase in the borrowing limit. Yellen on Tuesday said interest-bearing securities for the Government Securities Investment Fund, or the so-called "G Fund," will be underfunded until the debt limit is increased or suspended.

DeSantis weighed in on the classified documents revelations regarding Biden and Trump. Ron DeSantis of Florida came close to defending former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, when he accused the Biden administration of having a double standard on classified documents. Trump, meanwhile, kept hundreds of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The White House did not immediately respond to Insider's inquiry seeking a response to the governor's comments. Last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to review Biden's case, while US House Republicans also are launching investigations.
NBC News reporters tracked seven bellwether counties as part of the "County to County" project for the 2022 midterm elections. However, as the Omicron variant swept its way across the country last winter, even Democratic voters were in a sour mood, showing pandemic fatigue amid Biden’s stalled legislative agenda. Democrats doubled down on the message even as polls showed GOP Sen. Ron Johnson gaining momentum with a message on crime. For young voters in Dane County, it was a message that worked. Democrats were enthusiastic, and they'll continue to look to Dane County as key to their path to victory in 2024 and beyond.
But the visit also leaves several key questions unanswered, including how U.S. military support could evolve, whether Congressional support for the war will endure and - crucially - how the war will end. Biden announced that the United States would provide another $1.85 billion in military aid, including a Patriot missile defense system. The United States and its allies have been unwilling to provide other advanced weapons Ukraine has pleaded for. The next steps for Kyiv, the officials added, would be to receive additional air defense systems from the United States and other western countries along with better integrating them. "No more blank checks to Ukraine," Republican Representative Andy Biggs wrote on Twitter hours before Zelenskiy's visit to Washington.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is stepping down from her leadership role at the end of the year. But she just won re-election to a full two-year term and has filed paperwork to run again in 2024. "Don't bother me with a question like that," she told a reporter who asked if she'll serve the full term. However, such paperwork is largely a formality and doesn't necessarily indicate whether she will ultimately decide to run again. Meanwhile, speculation continues to brew in San Francisco about who might succeed Pelosi when she does choose to exit Congress.
DeSantis wouldn't comment on Trump when asked about him during a press conference in Key Biscayne. When reminded Trump was a Florida resident, DeSantis shot back: "I also got 22 million others." Trump has been living in Palm Beach, Florida, at Mar-a-Lago, his home and private club, since leaving the White House. The criticism starting even before Election Day, when Trump nicknamed DeSantis "Ron DeSanctimonious," and said DeSantis should show more gratefulness after Trump supported DeSantis for governor in 2018, rocketing him to the GOP nomination. Reporters haven't asked DeSantis about the dinner in the two press conferences he held in Florida this week, but other prominent Republicans, including potential 2024 rivals, have condemned the meeting.
Nov 30 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery-owned (WBD.O) CNN's top boss Chris Licht informed employees in an all-staff memo on Wednesday that layoffs are underway, according to a CNN reporter's tweet. loadingA representative for CNN did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Licht said CNN would notify a limited number of individuals, largely some of its paid contributors on Wednesday and the impacted employees on Thursday, according to the tweet. New Zealand's Jacinda Ardern and Finland's Sanna Marin quickly shot down a reporter who asked if their similar age and gender was the reason for their official meeting.
As two of the youngest heads of government and among a small percentage of female world leaders, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her Finnish counterpart Sanna Marin have long faced questions about their age and gender. But they were quick to shoot down a journalist who asked about the purpose of the first-ever visit to New Zealand by a Finnish prime minister on Wednesday. Marin (second left) and Ardern (right) held bilateral talks in Auckland, New Zealand. Because two women meet it’s not simply because of their gender.”Marin, 37, who is in New Zealand with a Finnish trade delegation, emphasized the country’s growing trade ties. “We are meeting because we are prime ministers,” she said in response.
DeSantis wrote the book during the Tea Party movement and before he ran for Congress. He did so throughout his 2011 book, "Dreams from Our Founding Fathers: First Principles in the Age of Obama." According to NPD BookScan, which tracks retail sales of US print books, "Dreams from Our Founding Fathers" sold 125 copies through July of 2022. In one section of the book, DeSantis wrote that Obama lacked the humility of George Washington, the first US president. Obama, DeSantis wrote, "garnered flattering media coverage by a press thoroughly enamored with his progressive politics."

But clients may not know that Freedman, 58, was accused of sexual assault in the 1980s and paid a $40,000 settlement to the accuser. She said that instead of taking her there, the men brought her to the nearby Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. The plaintiff said she and her friend then returned to Zeta Beta Tau to retrieve her shoe and car key. The 17-year-old and her parents sued Freedman and the two other fraternity brothers, as well as Zeta Beta Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon. (Zeta Beta Tau and the other college students accused of sexual assault also agreed to pay settlements, none of which admitted liability.)

A segment of House Republicans has talked about probing Hunter Biden for months. "Lots of luck in your senior year, as my coach used to say," Biden said when asked what his message would be to those Republicans. For months, a section of House Republicans has vowed to investigate Biden's family if they retake control of the lower chamber. As he has said repeatedly, Biden also expressed optimism that he could continue to work with some Republicans. The president also sounded upbeat about being able to find areas of agreement with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
