Do designers really expect us to wear those outlandish looks they show on the runway? I look at the images and can’t imagine anyone walking down a street in most of those clothes, no matter where they lived. — Mary, Auckland, New ZealandThis is one of those questions I have been asked pretty much every season since I started covering the runway shows. Another one is about why models never smile, which I answered last season, and I get it, I really do. (As does Mr. Owens himself, who told me backstage he had figured out a way to produce and sell the ropy looks.)

The Verdict on the New Alexander McQueen
  + stars: | 2024-03-03 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I was thinking about that a lot over the weekend, in part because of the designers here who, like Ms. Apfel, have built empires (or at least small fiefs) on a willingness to go their own way — Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto. Designers with a deep understanding of the rules and history of fashion and an equally powerful ability to rewrite both, and to imagine a different world. One whose uniforms can look bizarre and outrageous, but which create a sense of thrilling possibility: clothes like permission slips to think out of the box. And also because in Seán McGirr’s debut at Alexander McQueen, a house that once did all of the above, it got so very garbled. A McQueen MisstepMr. McGirr had the complicated job of taking over from Sarah Burton, the longtime deputy to Mr. McQueen, who had stabilized the brand after the designer’s suicide in 2010 and made it her own, adding a touch of grace to the angry romance and soaring imagination that traversed heaven and earth and that, combined with great technical proficiency, defined the McQueen name.

Wendy’s says it won’t use surge pricing

It was never our plan to raise prices when customers are visiting us the most.”But the questions over what to call Wendy’s experiment – surge pricing? Dynamic pricing? Surge pricing refers to dynamic pricing, which is a way for businesses to charge more (or less) based on how many people want their products at any given time. “Surge pricing sent the message to everybody that this is mostly about increasing prices. “After considerable public pushback, Wendy’s is now framing their dynamic pricing strategy as discounts during off-peak times instead of surge pricing during peak times,” she wrote.

After years of renting, Jackson Owens and Flora Jin bought a loft in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and it felt like the stuff of dreams. A week or so later, it was more like a nightmare. A few floors above them there was a gas leak, then an explosion. When the sprinklers came on, many of the building’s apartments were drenched, including the couple’s new 1,200-square-foot condo, which they’d bought for about $1.1 million in July 2021. “Our unit had severe water damage,” said Mr. Owens, 32, a software engineer.

The latest delay means financial aid awards might not come until April. AdvertisementThe sole application for receiving college financial aid has had a rocky rollout this year — and it means reward letters will be delayed by months. AdvertisementThe latest delay in receiving financial aid awards can be attributed to the department's efforts to update FAFSA qualifications to expand families' financial aid eligibility. However, that'll take time — and could leave some families in a time crunch when it comes to evaluating their financial aid packages. "Updating our calculations will help students qualify for as much financial aid as possible."

CNN —In recent weeks, Taylor Swift has been grabbing seemingly endless attention for the NFL with her attendance at boyfriend Travis Kelce’s games. Her work caught the public eye in particular thanks to a puffer coat custom made for Taylor Swift — sporting Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce’s jersey number, 87 — which the singer wore to a Chiefs game January 13. Rather than being attracted to light, researchers believe that artificial lights at night may actually scramble flying insects' innate navigational systems, causing them to flutter in confusion around porch lamps, street lights and other artificial beacons. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThat would make sense if the strongest light source was in the sky. But in the presence of artificial lights, the result is midair confusion, not attraction. They also documented that some insects will flip upside down — and often crash land — in the presence of lights that shine straight upward like search lights. Insect flight was least disrupted by bright lights that shine straight downward, the researchers found.

A recent string of plane safety incidents has made many more concerned about flying. Right-wing commentators including Elon Musk have baselessly decided that DEI initiatives are to blame. AdvertisementRight-wing commentators have a new theory to explain the recent series of high-profile plane safety incidents — and they are claiming that diversity initiatives are to blame. Conservative commentators have converged around the idea that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are jeopardizing plane safety, baselessly claiming that underqualified minorities have been promoted in the industry. AdvertisementExperts say that it is not just misguided to blame DEI initiatives for a reduction in the quality of workers, but also that it is less entrenched than its critics imagine.

He’s had some up-and-down years through injury and offensive woes, but this season Jackson has been back to his best, leading a No. 1 playoff seed and, while the year ended in playoff disappointment, Jackson had delivered one of the best regular seasons ever by an NFL quarterback. Jackson speaks after winning the NFL MVP award at the end of the 2019 season. “To be honest with you, I really didn’t care for other teams, really,” Jackson told reporters during his signing press conference. That’s the accolade that I really want so bad.”And now, with a second NFL MVP almost certainly sewn up, don’t bet again Jackson lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy on February 11.

$12.1 million in compensatory damages for Carroll to fix her reputation, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. The jury in that case awarded Carroll $5 million in combined compensatory and punitive damages. Her attorneys have asked for punitive damages to "make him stop" defaming her. Punitive damages could also send a message to other wealthy people that they cannot get away with lying about sexual abuse victims. Carroll, finishing her testimony in the trial Thursday, said her reputation has been marred by Trump's attacks.

“Anybody who understands the physics knows that.”Hansen’s words have heft — he is widely credited as the first scientist to publicly sound the alarm on climate change in the 1980s. Climate change is fueling storms in both the summer and winter. The year came within a whisker of breaching 1.5 degrees, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. “For all practical purposes we are only going to be looking at 1.5 degrees in the rearview mirror,” he said. Why 1.5 mattersFew scientists will dispute that the world faces a daunting path to limit warming to 1.5 degrees.

Kyle Juszczyk remembers the different feel when he took the field for the first time in the playoff rivalry between his San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. That rivalry of San Francisco and Green Bay is always a big one. Favre followed with two quick touchdown passes as Green Bay rolled to a 27-17 win. Green Bay won the first playoff matchup 23-10 against Mariucci the following year as the frustration mounted in San Francisco. Kaepernick braved the cold of Green Bay the following year and played without long sleeves or gloves.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks and Brenda Mallory, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, announced the projects Wednesday at the Pentagon. Because of the Pentagon's “relatively congested air space” outside Washington, solar panels were the best option for clean energy, he said. The building is a nationally registered historic landmark, so officials will work with local officials to ensure the panels meet all requirements. In addition to the Defense Department, projects also include installation of thermally efficient windows at the Energy Department headquarters in Washington, as well as efficiency upgrades to the Commerce and Transportation departments. The projects also include installation of solar panels at the U.S. Army Garrison in Wiesbaden, Germany, as well as energy and water efficiency improvements and solar panels at the Maui Air Traffic Control Tower in Kahului, Hawaii.
