Dirty soda shops want to be the next Starbucks

At a local store called Thirst, she tried a classic dirty soda combination: Dr Pepper with coconut cream and a raspberry syrup. Dirty soda is a non-alcoholic drink combined with creams, flavored syrups or fruit. What surprised Myrick the most about dirty soda shops was the sheer quantity of choices. Soda shops will have to continue to make the drinks relevant even once social media moves on, especially with such lofty growth goals. “It’s tough here because the vibe of the soda shops is a drive-through.”

Utility stocks this year have mounted a rally unseen in more than two decades. In the third quarter, utilities are the best out of 11 sectors that comprise the S & P 500, climbing 18%. As a group, utilities are poised to score their largest quarterly gain since George W. Bush was president in 2003. If that holds through yearend, utilities will see their biggest annual advance since 2000, when they surged more than 50%. The dollar wobbled on Friday, poised for a fourth straight week of declines as investors weighed U.S. data to gauge the pace of interest rate cuts, while China's spree of stimulus measures kept risk-sensitive currencies aloft. The risk-sensitive Australian and New Zealand dollars also held near multi-year highs due to China stimulus plans. This was, perhaps, the closest thing the White Sox have had to a prideful moment all season. As The Athletic’s Jayson Stark noted, the White Sox have used 29 position players this season. After their most recent downturn — a 12-game skid — the White Sox besting the Mets for worst ever became a matter of when, not if. Getz insisted the White Sox are on the right trajectory and even said ownership will “potentially” invest more in the organizational infrastructure. Now members of this White Sox team will shoulder the burden of 121 losses and counting into an uncertain future.

The study found that self-reported suicide attempts among these young people did not seem to increase while these bills were under debate in their state. But once the bills became law, the researchers saw a statistically significant increase in suicide attempts among young trans and nonbinary people who lived in those states. “Enacted anti-transgender laws may really be a source of increased minority stress that leads to increased suicide risk or other mental health issues,” Nath said. When legislation is affirming of a member of the community, research shows, suicide attempts decrease. “So it’s not surprising that these laws we now see are demonstrated to have an association with risk of suicide attempts.”

Gold bars sit in a vault at the Perth Mint Refinery, operated by Gold Corp, in Perth, Australia, on August 9, 2018. Gold hit a record high on Wednesday, boosted by a softer U.S. dollar and hopes of more interest rate cuts, while investors looked for new signals for the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory. Spot gold was steady at $2,658.08 per ounce, as of 0557 GMT, after hitting an all-time high of $2,670.43 earlier. On Tuesday, China announced a slew of support measures including outsized rate cuts, after the U.S. Fed cut rates by 50 basis points last week. Inflows to gold exchange-traded funds, particularly from Western investors, will rise in the coming months, providing further support for record-high bullion prices, analysts said.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars scaled multi-month peaks on Wednesday while sterling hit its highest in more than two years against a weaker dollar, as China's aggressive stimulus package provided the latest shot in the arm for risk appetite. Data on Tuesday showed U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly fell in September, amid mounting worries over the health of the labor market. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar last stood at 100.28, languishing near a more than one-year low of 100.21. The dollar index had fallen more than 0.5% in the previous session, its largest one-day percentage fall in a month.

Bitcoin jumps while Japan holiday dulls most currencies

The Bank of Japan left interest rates unchanged last week and indicated it was not in a hurry to hike them again. That decision, coming just days after the Fed's 50 basis points rate cut, put a pause to the yen's sharp gains this month. With Japan closed for Autumnal Equinox Day, the main driver of trade was expectations around further Fed rate cuts and the gains those have spurred in equities, commodity currencies and other risk assets. The Fed's rate cut "appears to have calmed market fears of a U.S. recession", Goldman Sachs said in a note. Meanwhile, the majority of economists polled by Reuters anticipate two more 25 bps rate cuts at the Fed's final two meetings this year.

And so it is with Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway slashing its holdings in Apple and Bank of America in recent months. Buffett himself has indicated in recent years that he doesn't see an abundance of compelling value on offer in the public markets. But this in itself isn't much of a clue about future market prospects or the macroeconomic moment. Borgato says he believes "Buffett wants to leave a Berkshire behind that requires [fewer] future cash allocation decisions, not more." I'm not a buyer of the "cash on the sidelines" case for expecting money market assets to drain into stocks.

What lower rates mean for markets
  + stars: | 2024-09-20 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
The Fed on Wednesday lowered interest rates, marking the first rate cut since March 2020. A decline in interest rates should, theoretically, mean good news for the stock market. The Fed likely won’t take rates lower as aggressively as they were raised, unless the economy takes a downturn and necessitates loose economic conditions. While mortgage rates and bond yields have begun drifting lower, companies and consumers still might not feel the effects of lower rates right away. But investors with outsized positions in Big Tech stocks should eye beaten-down areas of the market that benefit from lower interest rates, says Diton.

The U.S. dollar rose broadly on Thursday, recovering from an earlier tumble in the immediate aftermath of the Federal Reserve's outsized interest rate cut that had been largely priced in by markets. Fed policymakers on Wednesday projected the benchmark interest rate would fall by another half of a percentage point by the end of this year, a full percentage point next year and half of a percentage point in 2026, though they said the outlook that far into the future is necessarily uncertain.
