In 1996, when Peter Hessler taught at a small college in Sichuan Province, 90 percent of his students came from villages. Mr. Hessler, 5 feet 9 inches, towered over them by about half a head. Mr. Hessler returned to China in 2019 to teach at Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute. This time, all his nonfiction writing students came from cities, and some of the women in his class were even taller than him. But the political system that defined society had not changed one bit, Mr. Hessler writes in his new book, “Other Rivers: A Chinese Education.”

These diversity training efforts emerged around the time that affirmative action began by executive order from President John F. Kennedy. And 71% of people surveyed said they think DEI training is important to “creating a positive workplace culture.”What does DEI look like at work? The historic endorsement came after Biden announced Sunday that he is dropping out of the race following weeks of disarray within the Democratic Party. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. Despite the president’s backing, it remains unclear whether Harris will become the nominee, or what process the Democratic Party would take to select an alternative. Dmitri Mehlhorn, a Democratic political strategist advising several big-money backers, released a statement Sunday following Biden’s withdrawal supporting Harris. After she dropped out, Harris became a prominent surrogate for Biden before being named his vice presidential pick in August 2020.

Not only was it my job to teach students how to write a college-level essay, but I also found myself taking on another role. I involuntarily became a college student life coach of sorts. NEMA said that students were amongst those who died in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, without providing an exact number. Around 120 people were trapped when the building collapsed, according to Plateau State government. The governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, said the building collapsed as students were sitting an exam. Tens of thousands of students blocked the main streets of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, on Thursday, demanding that quotas for civil service jobs be abolished and those jobs given to candidates on the basis of merit. The protests broke out after a Dhaka court recently reinstated quotas for government jobs, which were abolished by a government order in 2018 following another countrywide student protest. The appellate division halted the new ruling for four weeks on Wednesday, but that did not quell the demonstrations. Protesting students blocked entry and exit points as well as key intersections in Dhaka, one of the world’s most crowded cities, causing major traffic congestion. Students broke a police barricade in Dhaka’s Shahbag area on Thursday evening to conduct a large sit-in.

New York CNN —Bloomberg Philanthropies is gifting $1 billion to make medical school free for the majority of students at Johns Hopkins University, joining other high-profile donors who have contributed to tuition-free medical schools across the country. Johns Hopkins said Monday that for most medical school students, the gift will cover the full cost of attendance, including tuition and living expenses. In 2018, NYU’s School of Medicine became the first medical school in the country to offer free tuition to accepted students. An October survey from the Association of American Medical Colleges found that 70% of medical students who graduated in 2023 have taken on some level of education debt. In February, Patrice Motz, a veteran Spanish teacher at Great Valley Middle School in Malvern, Pa., was warned by another teacher that trouble was brewing. Some eighth graders at her public school had set up fake TikTok accounts impersonating teachers. Ms. Motz, who had never used TikTok, created an account. “Answer: Sí.”In the days that followed, some 20 educators — about one quarter of the school’s faculty — discovered they were victims of fake teacher accounts rife with pedophilia innuendo, racist memes, homophobia and made-up sexual hookups among teachers. Hundreds of students soon viewed, followed or commented on the fraudulent accounts.

A good leader can't be afraid to get their hands dirty, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Years later, he would hatch the idea for Nvidia with his co-founders in a booth at the same Denny's where he'd once cleared tables, washed dishes and even cleaned toilets. "To me, no task is beneath me because, remember, I used to be a dishwasher [and] I used to clean toilets," Huang said in a March interview at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Whenever possible, the longtime CEO likes to show his employees his reasoning for a suggestion or solution he offers. That structure improves Nvidia's performance by allowing information and strategy to flow more directly between Huang and Nvidia's other leaders, according to Huang.

Yet, the system has also exacerbated the social divide between the haves and have-nots, who are confined to the largely abysmal state-run education system. That means entrance tests and examinations are a high-stakes juncture in a person's life. A half-hearted attempt at testing the country's education system in 2021 was aborted when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country. The company, which offers services ranging from online tutorials to offline coaching, attracted billions of dollars from investors worldwide during the pandemic when online education services were in high demand. One of the companies it bought was an offline test preparation service called Aakash Education Services, which is still expected to IPO this year.

Opinion: Public schools are not Sunday schools
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Opinion Amanda Tyler | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —It has been an especially active few weeks for news about religion in public schools. Public schools are not Sunday schools, and families should feel free to send their children to school without worrying about state officials interfering in their choices about religious instruction. These politically conservative state officials are seemingly making a show of testing the limits of government-sponsored religious instruction and exercise in public schools, emboldened by the US Supreme Court’s recent decisions. Like religious instruction in public schools, the public funding of religion undermines fundamental principles of religious freedom for all. By merging religious and political authority, taxpayer funding of religious schools threatens the rights of people of all faiths — and those of no faith.

While most of their issues I can address over the phone, some need a recommendation for a pediatrician for in-person care. There aren’t enough pediatricians right now, and because of that, some kids are unable to get the care they need. In New Jersey, children who need a developmental pediatrician wait a minimum of three months. In Philadelphia, kids can wait three to six months for a pulmonologist and four months to see an allergist, and many can’t see a developmental pediatrician at all. The results of this year’s medical residency match — a process where medical students are paired with residency programs in U.S. hospitals — were startling.

My parents took me on college visits, where we attended presentations that I listened to halfheartedly. But I couldn't quite give up my dream of moving further away and having an adventure. Not all the colleges in the book were American; some were overseas, and those were cheaper, a lot cheaper. I'd be leaving all the friends I'd made in the last few years and starting completely from scratch. Some friends thought it was cool that I was moving to Canada, but others found it odd.

The notable fact about the anti-Israel campus demonstrations is that they are predominantly an elite phenomenon. And what should those on the other side of the demonstrations — Jewish students and alumni most of all — do about it? Regarding the first question, some argue that the furor over the campus protests is much ado about not much. With notable exceptions, campus life at these schools is somewhat less roiled by protest than the media makes it seem. Outside groups, as more than one university president has told me, have played an outsize role in setting up encampments and radicalizing students.
