Reuters —France’s lower house of parliament on Thursday approved a bill seeking penalties on ultra-fast fashion products, sold by companies like China’s Shein, aimed at helping to offset their environmental impact. All voting lawmakers unanimously approved the bill, which will head to the senate before it can become law. Jade Gao/AFP/Getty ImagesThe bill comes as the French environmental ministry said it would propose a European Union ban on exports of used clothes, in a bid to tackle the worsening problem of textile waste. At the time, the country’s ministry of ecology said that French people throw away 700,000 tons of clothes — two-thirds of which ends up in landfills — each year. Among the world’s most polluting industries, fashion accounts for between 3% and 5% of global carbon emissions, according to consultancy McKinsey’s State of Fashion report.

CNN —After a first intervention for the fashion house’s seismic creative director John Galliano failed, Dior’s then-CEO Sidney Toledano staged a second, more serious one. In response, as Toledano recounts in the new documentary “High & Low: John Galliano,” the then-50-year-old gym-obsessive ripped open his shirt to reveal a rippling torso and said, “Does this look like the body of an alcoholic?”And so the designer’s drinking and pill-popping rolled on. The Pleasures tie-up may have been a surprise to traditional soccer fans, but it was by no means an accident. The Verdict on the New Alexander McQueen
  + stars: | 2024-03-03 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I was thinking about that a lot over the weekend, in part because of the designers here who, like Ms. Apfel, have built empires (or at least small fiefs) on a willingness to go their own way — Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto. Designers with a deep understanding of the rules and history of fashion and an equally powerful ability to rewrite both, and to imagine a different world. One whose uniforms can look bizarre and outrageous, but which create a sense of thrilling possibility: clothes like permission slips to think out of the box. And also because in Seán McGirr’s debut at Alexander McQueen, a house that once did all of the above, it got so very garbled. A McQueen MisstepMr. McGirr had the complicated job of taking over from Sarah Burton, the longtime deputy to Mr. McQueen, who had stabilized the brand after the designer’s suicide in 2010 and made it her own, adding a touch of grace to the angry romance and soaring imagination that traversed heaven and earth and that, combined with great technical proficiency, defined the McQueen name.

Was John Singer Sargent also the first celebrity stylist?

London CNN —In the spring of 1888, New York socialite Eleanora Iselin welcomed the portrait artist John Singer Sargent into her home, feverish over the question of what she would wear. Despite curating a selection of her best frocks, Eleanor Iselin was captured in her casual day dress at the insistence of Sargent. Working during the rise of haute couture, both Sargent and his subjects were living through a new dawn of fashion. Rachel was styled in a scrap of pink fabric which Sargent manipulated on canvas to become a dress. “Their work was ready-to-wear, using off the (rack) elements of portraiture, whereas with Sargent it always was bespoke.

Artificial intelligence is helping fashion brands understand consumer behaviors and demands. The Business of Fashion and McKinsey said that in a survey they conducted, about 73% of fashion executives said they planned to prioritize generative AI in 2024. AI can be used to improve efficiency and sustainability to both identify trends and create new ones — but it requires careful implementation. Horwitz, alongside her colleague Oliver Zimmer, built the first Google Fashion Trends report, which used machine learning to identify trends in Google search data. Finding Great Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City
  + stars: | 2024-02-23 | by ( Seth Sherwood | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Other than Brazil, no nation produces more coffee than Vietnam. Introduced by French colonists in the 19th century, the country’s coffee crop is now a $3 billion business and accounts for nearly 15 percent of the global market, making Vietnam the java giant of Southeast Asia. Quality, however, has only recently begun to catch up with quantity, mainly because farmers have begun augmenting Vietnam’s longtime cultivation of cheaper, easy-to-grow robusta beans with a connoisseur’s favorite, arabica. A major beneficiary has been the cafe scene in the country’s largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City (a.k.a. Thanks to direct crop-to-shop supplies, the retail business of coffee is booming as increasing numbers of indie roasteries and specialty coffeehouses sprout up around the city’s French colonial opera house, amid the megamalls and boutiques of fashionable Dong Khoi Boulevard, and in the shadows of the high-rise towers in District 2.

Outwardly, this season’s New York Fashion Week shows followed a familiar playbook. The official schedule ran for six days (albeit with fewer events) and it played the hits: Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Tory Burch.
