ATHENS, Greece — Constantine, the former and last king of Greece, who won an Olympic gold medal before becoming entangled in his country’s volatile politics in the 1960s as king and spent decades in exile, has died. Ritzau Scanpix 2023/Thomas Lekfeldt via REUTERSATHENS, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Greece's former King Constantine II, whose nine-year reign coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in the country's political history, died on Tuesday aged 82, state website ERT news reported. Constantine II, the only son of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, ascended to the throne in 1964 after his father died but his reign was marred by political instability which culminated in a military coup on April 21, 1967. With his wife Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, the former king, a sailor whose team won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics, had five children. Constantine, Prince William's godfather, and his family had lived in London for years, before returning to Greece.

Britain’s King Charles III offered sympathy to those struggling with “great anxiety and hardship” in his first Christmas broadcast as the U.K.’s monarch Sunday, amid a spiraling cost-of-living crisis. First broadcast in 1932, the message from the monarch has aired on television and radio in Britain and Commonwealth countries for the last 90 years. There has also been a series of walkouts by public workers over wages amid historic inflation. Ambulance and paramedic workers went on a strike earlier in the week and have another planned for Dec. 28. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted his government has acted “fairly and reasonably” in public sector pay negotiations.
A video in which a Canadian doctor claims that COVID-19 vaccines cause so-called “turbo cancer” is not based on facts, according to five experts who spoke to Reuters. He claimed that COVID-19 vaccines damage the immune systems of recipients and cause aggressive new cancers, as well as flare-ups in those in remission from the disease. During the same period, the charity estimated that 30,000 fewer people began their cancer treatment compared to 2019 (here). Reuters has previously addressed claims where COVID-19 vaccines have been falsely linked to weakening the immune system (here), and causing cancer (here and here). Five experts told Reuters that there is no evidence to suggest COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer, nor so-called “turbo cancer,” but said a drop in screenings during the pandemic may have led to rise in cancers first detected at their later stages.
CNN —The UK has greenlit a controversial plan to open the country’s first new coal mine in three decades, a little more than a year after the nation tried to convince the world to ditch coal at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow. Committee chairman Lord Deben said in a statement: “Phasing out coal use is the clearest requirement of the global effort towards Net Zero. We condemn, therefore, the Secretary of State’s decision to consent to a new deep coal mine in Cumbria, contrary to our previous advice. This decision grows global emissions and undermines UK efforts to achieve Net Zero.”The mine’s approval was also met with fierce criticism from scientists and environmentalists. Its opponents argue these jobs may not be secure, given the huge momentum in Europe to phase out coal.
‘Emancipation’ Review: Escaping Slavery, Will Smith Style
  + stars: | 2022-12-02 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Public support for the Civil War in the North was at a nadir in 1863 when the abolitionist magazine Harper’s Weekly published in a special July 4 edition an engraving of a photograph of an escaped slave with a horribly scarred back. The photograph itself was widely circulated, became known as “the scourged back” or “whipped Peter,” and helped renew Northern public support for the war, months after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had failed to do the same. As with much else about enslaved people, though, reliable details about the subject of the photo are hard to come by. Nevertheless, “whipped Peter” has inspired the big-budget movie “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith as the escapee, who was photographed in Baton Rouge, La., after an arduous journey through swampland. A legend that began with the (probably fictional) Harper’s text accompanying the image, and two other images in the magazine that are said to be of the scourged escapee but clearly depict a different and much younger black man, has it that Peter joined the Union Army and fought bravely, though historians such as David Silkenat of the University of Edinburgh have argued that this was simply one of many wartime tall tales used for propaganda purposes.
It involved 1,795 adults, ages 50 to 90, with mild cognitive impairment due to early Alzheimer’s disease or mild Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia. Such a score is consistent with early Alzheimer’s disease, with a higher number associated with more cognitive impairment. By 18 months, the CDR-SB score went up 1.21 points in the lecanemab group, compared with 1.66 in the placebo group. Overall, there were serious adverse events in 14% of the lecanemab group and 11.3% of the placebo group. The researchers also wrote that about 0.7% of participants in the lecanemab group and 0.8% of those in the placebo group died, corresponding to six deaths documented in the lecanemab group and seven in the placebo group.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has "been a complicated time" for Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, she said in an interview with Variety published Wednesday. "I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time," Meghan, 41, said. Meghan and Harry traveled from California — where they decamped after stepping back from royal duties in 2020 — to the U.K. to attend the queen’s funeral following her Sept. 8 death. During their trip to the U.K., Harry and Meghan also reunited with Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, at Windsor Castle to pay tribute to the queen and greet mourners. The couple share two children: Archie, born in May 2019, and Lilibet, born in June 2021, who is named after the queen, whose family nickname was Lilibet.

LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace released a photo Saturday giving the first public glimpse of the new ledger stone installed at the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II. The image shows the hand-carved Belgian black marble slab with brass letter inlays set into the floor of King George VI Memorial Chapel, St. George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England. Surrounded by floral wreaths and bouquets, it is inscribed with her name and the years of her birth and death, alongside those of her father, George VI; her mother, Elizabeth; and her husband, Philip, who died last year. All four royals were members of the Order of the Garter, which has St. George’s Chapel as its spiritual home. The release came ahead of the queen’s burial site opening to visitors next week as Windsor Castle reopens to the public.
But many campaigners believe King Charles III presents a unique opportunity: They think most royalism was actually fondness for the widely loved queen, and he — a new, less popular king — won't inherit this support. The English Civil War resulted in the beheading of King Charles I, before the "Glorious Revolution" saw English elites effectively choose a new monarch who gave lawmakers more rights. William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, look at floral tributes to the queen at Sandringham Estate on Thursday. Some observers agree that Charles should be viewed in an entirely new light now that he is king. “The monarchy knows statesmanship is about knowing to give up what you can no longer keep,” she said.
