Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, say the homes or businesses of four local and state politicians have been shot at since early December. Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina speaks with the media about the recent shootings at the homes and businesses of local elected officials. In the three cases that involved homes, the shootings involved eight to 12 rounds, police said. Eight shots were fired at the home of Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa on Dec. 4. Most of the shootings happened in Albuquerque, which is in Bernalillo County.
A day after gunfire hit Torrez's office, over a dozen shots were fired at then-Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley's Albuquerque home on Dec. 11, police said. On Tuesday night, multiple shots were fired at the southwest Albuquerque home of state Senator Linda Lopez. On Thursday, the downtown law office of state Senator Moe Maestas was struck, police said. "They are all members of the Democratic Party that we know, so there's always that connection," Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina told the press conference. The subject of director Joe Berlinger ’s captivating, penetrating, four-part “Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street” is described by one of its kinder voices as a “financial sociopath.” Later, someone just comes right out and calls him a “serial killer.” All of which may help explain our persistent obsession with the man who perpetrated the largest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history. After so many productions, dramatic and documentary, shouldn’t we be tired of Bernie Madoff ? One might as well ask if we’re tired of Charles Manson , or Jack the Ripper. It’s certainly not violence that makes the Madoff story magnetic, although the death toll does begin to resemble the post-heist body count in “Goodfellas” after Madoff’s nearly $65 billion rip-off goes belly up in 2008. Madoff, who died in 2021, is very matter-of-fact about the crimes he committed, dispassionate, even clinical.

Portugal, needing only a draw to be sure of top spot in Group H and mindful of the risk of yellow-card suspensions in the next round, have brought Diogo Dalot and Antonio Silva into the defence. Matheus Nunes, Vitinha and Joao Mario come into the midfield in place of Bernardo Silva, William Carvalho and Bruno Fernandes -- who scored twice in the 2-0 win over Uruguay -- while Ricardo Horta replaces Joao Felix up front. South Korea's Portuguese coach Paulo Bento left out central defender Kim Min-jae, who was an injury doubt, and replaced him with Kwon Kyung-won, while Lee Jae-sung and Lee Kang-in were drafted into midfield. The Koreans, with one point so far, must beat Portugal and hope the result of Ghana's match with Uruguay goes their way in order to reach the last 16. SocGen’s BNP envy carries a cost

It mimics BNP Paribas’s (BNPP.PA) deal with European peer Exane, which the French group took over last year. SocGen research analysts cover around 500 mostly European stocks, according to JPMorgan, compared with AllianceBernstein’s more international coverage of roughly 800 companies. Second, the venture makes the French bank’s equities business less reliant on derivatives and structured products, which led to heavy losses in 2020. Trading cash equities and selling research typically chews up much less capital and leads to fewer blow-ups. And the wider equities trading business is increasingly dominated by larger players, especially U.S. banks.

In a note to clients Monday, Bernstein dove deep into Microsoft's Windows business after declining PC shipment data sparked renewed worries about its implications for the tech giant. By contrast, Bernstein estimates only around 20% of Windows revenue comes from consumer PCs. Club take The decline in PC sales after a few booming years during the Covid pandemic has been on our radar for months. However, Bernstein made an interesting case about the makeup of Windows revenue, and we see how the analysts could conclude that Microsoft won't be the hardest hit by the PC slowdown. Bernanke bank-crisis Nobel requires markets sequel

LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rarely has an academic put theory into practice like Ben Bernanke. Yet the resulting era of tight bank regulation and ultra-low interest rates helped build up risks in financial markets which are only slowly becoming apparent. Bernanke’s research, and that of fellow laureates Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig, put lenders at the heart of the economy. In 2021, they accounted for about half of total global financial assets, compared with two-fifths for banks. Years of loose monetary policy, under Bernanke and his successors, have pushed many of these market players to take on more risk.
London CNN Business —Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig were awarded the Nobel Prize in economics on Monday for their work on banks and financial crises. Bernanke, who led the US central bank during the 2008 global financial crisis, received the award for his research on the Great Depression. While Bernanke served as chair, the central bank pioneered a program of quantitative easing, buying up assets to help stimulate economic growth. The Nobel prize, officially known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, comes with an award of 10 million Swedish kronor ($885,370) to be split equally among the laureates. It was not instituted by Alfred Nobel, but established by Sweden’s central bank and awarded in memory of Nobel.
PARIS, Oct 10 (Reuters) - French luxury groups LVMH (LVMH.PA), Gucci-owner Kering (PRTP.PA) and Hermes (HRMS.PA) are expected to post double-digit third-quarter sales growth as demand for high-end fashion from tourists and shoppers revamping post-pandemic wardrobes remains strong. Without citing a corresponding inflation figure, UBS estimates prices for the sector increased by 4.6% on average this year, through July. A Visible Alpha consensus cited by the bank points to 13% organic sales growth. Pusz expects 13% organic sales growth for Kering and 15% growth at constant rates from Hermes, over the period. LVMH posts third-quarter revenue on Oct. 11, while Kering and Hermes announce results on Oct. 20.
Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that Sen. Joe Manchin had gone "off the rails." One of the most prominent examples was when he gutted President Joe Biden's "Build Back Better" spending plan. "When people ask, 'What happened to Joe Manchin, why did he go off the rails?' "The fact is, Joe Manchin should have been brought into the Republican Party long ago," Trump wrote. In December, McConnell invited Manchin to join the GOP and slammed the Democratic Party for calling Manchin a "liar."

WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Victims of Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme can expect to soon receive another $372 million to help cover their losses, the U.S. Justice Department announced on Wednesday, putting total recoveries above $18.5 billion. Payouts to over 27,000 victims will come from the Madoff Victim Fund, a $4.05 billion government fund set up in 2013 and overseen by former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Richard Breeden. Following the latest distribution, the fund's eighth, victims will have received over $4 billion, covering some 88% of their losses, the department said. More than 40,000 claimants have been compensated through the victim fund, the Justice Department said. Another $14.5 billion has been recouped for customers of the former Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC by the court-appointed trustee liquidating that firm in bankruptcy.
