During the interview, Naim rejected defining Hamas’ attacks as terrorism, falsely claiming that his organization does not target civilians. Hamas has denied international organizations any access to those hostages still in captivity to assess their wellbeing. While Naim denied the allegations of sexual violence, he said Hamas was unable to account for the wellbeing of the hostages because of the continued bombardment of Gaza. In recent weeks, many civilians in Gaza have increasingly blamed Hamas for the mounting starvation. This year, it comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Gaza, Israeli crackdowns on Palestinian militant groups in the occupied West Bank and Hamas’ calls for more attacks.

CNN —For many of the 170 million TikTok users in the United States, Wednesday’s vote in the House of Representatives to effectively ban the social media platform is worrisome. That’s just one reason why it’s laughable to hear China’s foreign ministry claim that the TikTok bill would disrupt market operations and undermine investor confidence. Most of the world’s most popular social media apps, incidentally, are banned in China unless they — or their user data — are locally based and thus easily overseen by the government. She has had multiple meetings with legislators and has spoken with Trump about protecting TikTok, according to the Washington Post. The government needs to develop oversight rules for all social media.

My son has been walking to school with friends since he was 9. My husband and I decided to delay giving him a phone, and he got one just last year. This is especially true for young users who are now entering a new busy time of life known as adulthood. AdvertisementAfter demolishing the competition from 2020 through the first half of 2022, TikTok's DAU growth rate has collapsed. One interesting theory is that TikTok users are growing up and taking on new responsibilities that leave less time to watch videos. If some of TikTok's core users can no longer afford to spend an hour a day on the app, that's not good for business. This is not just meThe Wall Street Journal recently interviewed a few TikTok users in their 20s.

mary zieglerWell, I think it’s much easier to ban abortion than it is to enforce a criminal law against abortion. mary zieglerNo, I think that’s right. If our abortion politics don’t reflect our abortion views, what does that tell us about the health of the democracy? We’ve seen upwards of 10 states — I think it’s 14 or 15 that have changed their definition of abortion in abortion restrictive states since Dobbs. So, the idea is that abortions that are presented as life saving either are not abortions or are simply pretexts for abortion that’s elective.

I loved my name — until Amazon ruined it

That's until Amazon created Alexa, the ubiquitous little device that took the world by storm in 2015. That cultural moment was the peak of my torment: I couldn't introduce myself to anyone without having a dreaded Amazon moment. In almost every meeting, there would be a one-minute distraction for us to listen to Alexa say, "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble understanding right now…" while everyone snickered to themselves and waited for her to finish. If anything, being able to say "Alexa, like the Amazon robot" makes it more memorable when I meet new people. The most ironic part is that the Amazon device can actually be named something else.

Sam Bankman-Fried might be in jail, but the NYT reports that he's still got a finger on the pulse with crypto. Bankman-Fried has been reportedly sharing crypto investment tips with prison guards, per NYT. Bankman-Fried is reportedly giving crypto investment tips and touting investments in the cryptocurrency Solana to prison guards, The Times reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Bankman-Fried, Mukasey said, should be given a shorter sentence of five to six-and-a-half years. "A sentence that returns Sam promptly to a productive role in society would be sufficient, but not greater than necessary, to comply with the purposes of sentencing," Mukasey wrote.

Bankman-Fried's lawyers filed a sentencing submission, asking for a prison sentence of no longer than 78 months — or six-and-a-half-years. The US Probation Office, which issues sentencing reports that judges typically rely on, recommended 100 years behind bars — which Bankman-Fried's lawyers called "barbaric." Advertisement"That recommendation is grotesque," Bankman-Fried's lawyers wrote. Sam Bankman-Fried's approach to veganism illustrated both his selflessness and awkwardness, his younger brother, Gabriel Bankman-Fried, wrote in a letter to the judge. In the sentencing submission, Bankman-Fried's lawyers argue that "the most reasonable estimate" for how much his victims lost was "zero."

BURN BOOK: A Tech Love Story, by Kara SwisherPublic opinion has soured so thoroughly on Silicon Valley that it can be hard to comprehend the excitement that surrounded the industry in its early years. How did people miss the threat of concentrated wealth and power, the super-exploitation of gig workers, the commodification of daily life, the pollution of discourse by micro-targeted propaganda and whiny billionaires? A common story holds that we were dazzled by fast-talking entrepreneurs and entranced by the slick platforms and gadgets they served up, deluded into believing digital technology would solve all of our problems. But perhaps the emphasis on user irrationality is overstated. One of the insights to be gleaned from “Burn Book: A Tech Love Story,” a memoir by the veteran technology journalist Kara Swisher, is that those who embraced the internet early on may have been driven by a totally reasonable dissatisfaction with the status quo, as much as a naïve infatuation with the promise of digital utopia.

CNN —US politics is now split by a fault line over Russia that could have far graver global implications even than condemning Ukraine to defeat after President Vladimir Putin’s invasion. Trump has also not repudiated his recent comment that he’d invite Russia to invade NATO nations that fell short of non-binding targets on defense spending. Aside from the mysterious hold that Putin appears to exert over Trump, the ex-president’s hostility towards Ukraine is easily explainable. Opposing aid to Ukraine is also an almost perfect issue for the ex-president and his allies in the GOP primary. I think that’s true. Well, I have to say I’m very surprised, shocked, disillusioned perhaps by the turn that things have taken in this country in the last decade or so. SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Michael Thurmond thought he was reading familiar history at the burial place of Georgia's colonial founder. The son of a sharecropper and great-grandson of a Georgia slave, Thurmond became an attorney and has served for decades in state and local government. Historians have widely agreed Oglethorpe and his fellow Georgia trustees didn’t ban slavery because it was cruel to Black people. Escaped slaves captured in Oglethorpe’s Georgia were returned to slaveholders. Thurmond's book openly embraces such evidence that Oglethorpe's history with slavery was at times contradictory and unflattering.

His massive channel has 239 million subscribers, and his videos regularly get well over 100 million views. "Each video does a couple million in ad revenue, a couple million in brand deals," he told Time Magazine this week, which noted that brands pay between $2.5 million to $3 million for a shout-out in a video. "I've reinvested everything to the point of—you could claim—stupidity, just believing that we would succeed," he said.

The Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers. CBS will broadcast the event, which will be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Doesn’t matter: Publishers around the world are putting up versions of this story, anyway — with the same keyword-laden text.
