REUTERS/Cristina Sille Acquire Licensing RightsBUENOS AIRES, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Argentina's presidential election race is putting abortion access and women's rights in the spotlight, sparking fierce debate in a country that has been a pioneer in expanding reproductive rights in Latin America. The election frontrunner, economist Javier Milei, opposes abortion and wants to hold a referendum on whether the 2020 legalization of abortion before the 14th week of pregnancy should be repealed. He also wants to shut the ministry of women, gender and diversity, which he has called a type of "affirmative action" that is degrading towards women. She would leave abortion laws unchanged, though also close the women's ministry. Repealing the abortion law is not on their agenda, because "Argentina already had that debate," she told Reuters.

[1/3] Argentina Presidential candidate Sergio Massa of Union por la Patria party attends the presidential debate ahead of the October 22 general elections, at the National University of Santiago del Estero, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina October 1, 2023. Under Argentine law, two mandatory debates have to be held before the 22 October presidential election, where Argentine voters will be presented with radically different visions for the future. With growing skepticism among voters, the debate on economy, education, human rights and "democratic coexistence" took place with a pre-established format and strict rules that allowed little time for candidates to elaborate their points. On education, all candidates supported public education and on human rights they maintained their differences on the recent history of Argentina. The second debate addressing security, work and "human development, housing and environmental protection" will be held next Sunday in Buenos Aires.

Bullrich, a conservative former lawmaker and security minister, is running against center-left candidate Sergio Massa and Javier Milei, a radical libertarian. The advisor claimed that IMF officials would likely support Bullrich's approach. They told us, 'If you win and put this program on the table and it begins to advance, we will be giving it the necessary support,'" said Martinez Maino. Former President Mauricio Macri, a member of Bullrich's party, renegotiated a previous IMF loan deal for $44 billion in 2018. Felipe Massa, the Brazilian racing driver, believes he lost the Formula 1 championship unfairly, and now he plans to ask a British court to have the result overturned. The twist is that the title he is seeking is from 2008. Massa lost the championship that year by a single point, but a scandal about a possibly deliberate crash in one race and revelations that have come in the ensuing years have prompted him to seek a reversal. “I am the champion, and I feel that.”But many in the sport are uncomfortable re-examining such an old case. “If everybody were to open up situations, then the sport would be in disarray,” Toto Wolff, the current head of the Mercedes team, told reporters over the weekend.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's lower house on Tuesday passed a government-backed bill to cut taxes on high-income earners, a move that would erase about one trillion pesos ($2.8 billion) from state coffers in 2023, according to official estimates. The bill, which must now go through the Senate, passed with 135 votes in favor and 103 against. "Salaries are not profit," Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa wrote on social media platform X following the vote. Opposition lawmakers blasted the move, saying the proposed tax cut aims to benefit Massa's presidential run for the October election. The South American nation is grappling with triple-digit annual inflation, with analysts polled by the central bank setting it at 169.3% at the end of the year.

Sept 19 (Reuters) - Formula One risks disarray in the unlikely event of Felipe Massa winning a threatened legal claim for the 2008 world championship, according to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. The Brazilian lost that title by a point to Britain's Lewis Hamilton, then at McLaren and now at Mercedes and a seven-time world champion. "I don't think he has a case, to be honest," Wolff told reporters at the latest edition of the Singapore Grand Prix last weekend. "For me this is like watching a telenovela or soap opera playing out in front of me," added the Austrian. Wolff had said earlier that Massa's case was sure to set a precedent and Mercedes were watching "with curiosity".

Mercedes watching Massa case with interest, says Wolff

Former Ferrari driver Massa lost that title by a point to Lewis Hamilton, now at Mercedes and a seven-time world champion. The Brazilian, 42, says an alleged "conspiracy" denied him the title because the sport's leaders knew the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix was manipulated but took no action until a year later. Wolff suggested that outcome could also be challenged if Massa were to succeed with his case. "The FIA commented on the 2021 race with a clear statement so that's why we are looking at it with interest," he said. The governing FIA said in March 2022 after an enquiry that "the results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the FIA Formula One World Championship are valid, final and cannot now be changed."

LA PLATA, Argentina, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Wielding a chainsaw above his head in the Argentine city of La Plata this week, radical presidential front-runner Javier Milei riled up thousands of supporters angry with 124% inflation and a painful cost-of-living crisis. But that programme failed to put South America's second-largest economy back on its feet. Even if he wins the Oct. 22 election and takes power in December, Milei would need alliances in Congress to push through reforms and a new IMF programme - Argentina's 23rd. Argentina’s annual inflation rate rose to 124.4%, according to figures released by the government’s INDEC statistics agency Wednesday. “It’s the number that summarizes the tragedy left by Massa,” Patricia Bullrich, the presidential candidate for the main opposition coalition, wrote on social media after the inflation number was released. Political Cartoons View All 1157 ImagesRecent polls show Milei leading ahead of general elections on Oct. 22 with Massa in second place and Bullrich third. The high inflation rate is in large part a product of the government's devaluation of the local currency, the peso, by nearly 20% following the Aug. 13 primaries. Ponti said the sharp rise in prices had to do with a confluence of factors including the way that beef prices had largely remained frozen for months despite the inflationary economy.

Lawyers for Brazilian Massa last week notified Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the governing FIA, of the intent to claim compensation. An FIA spokesperson last week acknowledged receipt of "correspondence" from Massa's representatives and said the matter was under review. The scandal, widely known as 'Crashgate', did not emerge until a year later and led to Renault team bosses being banned. Vasseur said teams wanted to know the result of races at the chequered flag and not after the podium celebrations had happened.
