The bitcoin rally was catalyzed by microeconomic factors at the end of 2023, but may have recently fused into the more macroeconomic-fueled gold rally, according to Wolfe Research. On Friday, it hit record highs for a fourth consecutive session. Bitcoin has also been trading at record highs this week, after hitting new all-time highs on both Tuesday and Friday. Additionally, however, "positive factors for bitcoin have lined up over the past year," Stephanie Roth, Wolfe's chief economist, said in a note Thursday. Gold is widely seen as a safe haven asset and inflation hedge, a narrative many also ascribe to bitcoin, sometimes known as "digital gold."

At the time, Australian police dismissed her concerns, insisting that her mother, Marion Barter, had disappeared by choice, and wanted nothing to do with her family. Ric Blum told the NSW Coroner's court that he last saw Barter in June 1997, just before she left Australia. Blum told the court Cornelius had lied about their relationship, which was platonic, he said. Several years later, Ghislaine Danlois-Dubois met Blum in 2006 through an advertisement she posted in a newspaper seeking companionship. O’Sullivan concluded by reading Leydon’s own words about her mother, Marion Barter, read from her submission.

The past year has brought an exceptionally varied and thematically rich crop of movies exploring men and their — to use the proper scientific term — mommy issues. By the end of most of them, blood is on the floor, and the collateral damage is steep. Men who couldn’t, or worse, didn’t want to, were portrayed as marionettes tied to and practically strangled by their mothers’ apron strings. “I’ve been talking to this psychiatrist about my mother for two years now,” his character says in “Pillow Talk” (1959), adding, “It’s perfectly healthy. Karl Hendon | Moment | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation held steady at 4% year-on-year in January on the back of easing prices for furniture and household goods, food and non-alcoholic beverages. Economists polled by Reuters had produced a consensus forecast of 4.2% year-on-year for January and -0.3% for the month. The CPI goods annual rate slowed from 1.9% to 1.8%, but price pressures in the services industry remained hot, with the CPI services annual rate rising from 6.4% to 6.5%. The U.K. has lagged its peers in bringing down inflation, but the headline CPI has been on a general downward trajectory since the October 2022 peak of 11.1% year-on-year. The labor market and wage growth have meanwhile eased but will remain uncomfortably robust for a central bank aiming to drag inflation back to its 2% target.
