☆ GM halts production at two major U.S. plants due to Hurricane Helene

DETROIT — General Motors has temporarily halted vehicle production at two U.S. factories that assemble highly profitable large pickups and SUVs due to impacts to suppliers as a result of Hurricane Helene. A GM spokeswoman declined to speculate on when the plants were expected to restart production as of Friday morning. A Thursday message to workers in Arlington viewed by CNBC said production at that plant was expected to resume Monday. Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida late last week and hit the southeastern United States and parts of western North Carolina particularly hard. Jeffrey Morrison, GM vice president of global purchasing and supply chain, on Thursday said the hurricane and the port workers strike were disruptive events for the automaker.

North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. "We don't think of western North Carolina and the Appalachian mountains as an area that has significant flood risk."

Two racing teams, one owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan, filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday, accusing NASCAR operators of being "monopolistic bullies" who line the pockets of the circuit's founding family. HOUSTON — A Black high school student in Texas who was punished for nearly all of his junior year over his hairstyle has left his school district rather than spend another year of in-school suspension, according to his attorney. It would allow him to return to school while a federal lawsuit he filed proceeds. George’s federal lawsuit also alleged that his punishment violates the CROWN Act, a recent state law prohibiting race-based discrimination of hair. In February, a state judge ruled in a lawsuit filed by the school district that its punishment does not violate the CROWN Act. Barbers Hill’s hair policy was also challenged in a May 2020 federal lawsuit filed by two other students.

Washington CNN —Ahmed Abu Khatallah, the Libyan militia leader convicted for his role in the deadly 2012 terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, was resentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison, despite federal prosecutors seeking at least 60 years to life. Khatallah was present at the hearing, sitting silently at the defense table in a white prison jumpsuit and a long white beard. He listened to the proceedings through a pair of interpreters, but did not address the court at any point. The judge also sentenced Khatallah to 10 years for the fourth crime and ordered him to serve that time after completing the 12-year sentence. The judge maintained the 10-year sentence for the fourth crime, which Khatallah will serve following the first 18 years.
