A record 31 million passengers are expected to fly US airlines over the course of this week, according to Airlines for America, the industry trade group. And while many airlines have increased the available number of flights and seats, those capacity increases have not kept pace with demand. With some of the busiest months yet to come, a new record for the percentage of seats airlines’ filled is within reach. Airlines are signaling prices will probably go higher as some of the lower-fare airlines struggled with ongoing losses and sharply reduced their capacity. But critics of the airlines say troubles at the lower fare airlines aren’t solely to blame for higher fares.

CNN —The Maldives, with its sprawling white sand beaches and dazzling coral reefs, is one of the world’s most expensive holiday destinations. Now, though, this Indian Ocean archipelago nation has just increased the price it costs to leave. The departure tax is broken down per passenger based on the class of service they’re using to fly out of the Maldives. Located off the coast of India, the Maldives has a population of about 525,000 across more than 1,000 islands and atolls. Geography makes the Maldives an easy sell for high-end brands, as hotels and resorts can easily have their own private island.

This luxury is set to be taken to new heights on British Airways superjumbos, as the airline just unveiled a fresh design for its first class airplane seat, set to launch on BA’s A380 planes in 2026. CNN Travel was among the first to try out British Airways’ new cabin product during an unveiling at the airline’s London headquarters. British Airways suggests the wardrobe eliminates the need for overhead storage, which (perhaps controversially) won’t be a component of these new first class cabins. Each first class seat also features a 32-inch 4K inflight personal entertainment screen and adjustable mood lighting, including a “cinema” mode. Future of first classWhile British Airways is investing in its premium cabins, some airlines are moving away from first class.

For many onlookers, the incident between Luis Rubiales and Jennifer Hermoso at the 2023 Women’s World Cup final offered momentary insight into the life of a women’s soccer player. The fallout to the Rubiales kiss only reinforced her view that this was a story that demanded a wider audience, and now was the time to tell it. While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. The 25% tariff Trump floated would have “huge impacts” on gas prices, amounting to an increase between 25 cents to 75 cents per gallon, he said. Said differently, your guac and avocado toast could skyrocket if 25% tariffs are levied on Mexico. Bottom line: It’s going to hurtThe new round of tariffs Trump is prepared to impose comes as the US has grown increasingly reliant on imports from Mexico and Canada.

The latest:Trump wants to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico “on ALL products coming into the United States,” he said on Truth Social. He also wants an “additional” 10 percent tariff on imports from China, which Trump blames for the fentanyl crisis, a charge that Beijing has repeatedly disputed. Europe, Japan and South Korea weren’t even mentioned in Trump’s announcement, but stocks have fallen there, too. That suggests rising fears that a new trade war could scramble global supply chains and dent profits. Does the United States Have an Infertility Crisis?
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It’s become a popular talking point among some of President-elect Trump’s most prominent supporters: America has an infertility problem. “Why are so many couples infertile?” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mr. Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, asked in a September post on the social media site X. Dr. Casey Means, a former surgeon and health influencer who has advised Mr. Kennedy, has called infertility a “crisis.”And Mr. Trump himself has said he would task Mr. Kennedy with investigating “the decades-long increase in chronic health problems,” including infertility, or the medical inability to conceive. Like people in many other developed regions across the globe, Americans are having fewer children now than before — a demographic trend that has alarmed some conservatives in particular. Some of that is likely a result of social and economic factors, like steep child care costs, housing prices and more people choosing to forgo starting families.

Senate Republicans derailed President-elect Donald Trump’s first jaw-dropping pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz. But it’s unclear if they will be able to block any other controversial nominees despite skepticism from some rank-and-file Republicans. In the weeks since Trump’s dramatic election victory, the power struggle between the president-elect and independent-minded Senate Republicans has been playing out in plain view. Senators are getting a brief reprieve from questions about Trump’s nominees as they celebrate Thanksgiving. Some Senate Republicans who leveled some of the strongest criticism at Gaetz said they could live with Hegseth, despite the 2017 assault allegations.

"San José State University will continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said said. The developers would only need to reveal the training material that is “sufficient to identify with certainty” whether the copyright holder’s works were used. Failing to comply would create a legal assumption — until proven otherwise — that the AI developer did indeed use the copyrighted work. Sen. In today’s edition, senior politics reporter Alex Seitz-Wald breaks down the long-standing Democratic truisms that were challenged by the results of the 2024 elections. Here are five of the party’s core assumptions that have been challenged by the 2024 election outcome:1. Higher turnout benefits Democrats: Democrats have long taken for granted a simple truism: The more people who vote, the better for Democrats. NBC News exit polls show Trump won voters without college degrees 56%-42%, while he narrowly won voters with family incomes of $30,000 to $100,000 annually. But Trump won both the Electoral College and popular vote this year as Harris’ performance fell in those Democratic bastions.

As President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the CDC, Dave Weldon, a former congressman from Florida and a physician, is positioned as an important anti-vaccine ally for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's pick for health secretary. The CDC is responsible for tracking and responding to infectious diseases, developing vaccine guidelines, collecting and analyzing health data and managing public health emergencies. The CDC provides vaccine recommendations for the public, including the pediatric vaccine schedule, which is followed by schools and parents. “This puts CDC, and HHS, in the driver’s seat for determining vaccine recommendations going forward,” she said. As HHS secretary, Kennedy could replace members of the ACIP with anti-vaccine advocates who make recommendations that the CDC approves, Reiss speculated.

It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. That’s shareholder money.”Most capital spending by automakers isn’t wasted, but the industry isn’t as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. While losing ground in China, GM has been among the most aggressive in spending on EVs and self-driving vehicles. GM and Hyundai this summer entered into an agreement to explore “future collaboration across key strategic areas” in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies.

A ransomware attack on one of Starbucks’ software vendors has disrupted how the coffee chain’s baristas view and manage their schedules, the company said on Monday. Starbucks said it’s working closely with the vendor to resolve the issue. The outage affects Starbucks’ employee platform that shows baristas their schedules and allows the company to track how many hours employees have worked. The interruption has not affected customers directly, and Starbucks said it’s continuing to serve people in its cafes. As ransomware attacks have surged, 2024 is on track to be one of the worst years on record.

When COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev stepped to the podium at the closing meeting of the Baku climate summit on Sunday morning, hoping to clinch a hard-fought agreement on global climate finance, he carried with him two speeches. Expectations for a deal were depressed by worries of a looming U.S. withdrawal from global climate cooperation, geopolitical turmoil, and a rise of isolationist politics that had shunted climate change off much of the world’s top priorities list. An activist holds a globe balloon during a protest at the COP29 United Nations climate change conference, in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Nov. 21. That made getting a bigger climate finance number hard, observers to the talks said. “Even maintaining climate finance at current levels in the current political environment is a huge fight,” said Joe Thwaites, senior advocate on international climate finance at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group.

A cease-fire deal to end the conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia was close but not complete Monday, three senior Biden administration officials told NBC News. Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 20 people in the Lebanese capital of Beirut while Hezbollah fired more than 200 rockets at Israel, leaving neighborhoods in flames, according to the Israeli military. Amir Levy / Getty ImagesThe latest clashes follow months of intensifying fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, with Hezbollah firing rockets and other projectiles into Israel after the surprise Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack that ignited the war in Gaza. The attacks have spanned as far as parts of Syria, where a recent Israeli airstrike killed a senior Hezbollah commander. Talks of a possible cease-fire come about a month after Israel attacked Iran on its soil, stoking fears that Iran would retaliate and dramatically escalate tensions in the region.

But the added promise from GM to become a “works” team — building both a car and a power unit — led to a breakthrough. It will be the first time since 2016 that F1 has had more than 10 teams on the grid. One of those existing teams, Haas F1, is owned by American Gene Haas with headquarters in North Carolina. Bird flu has been detected in a batch of raw milk sold in California stores and the state’s department of public health said Sunday that the public should not drink it. No one has become sick nor contracted the disease from this lot of raw milk, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) noted.
