Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers are in the region, where Ukraine’s three-month military incursion into Russian territory has stalled. The New York Times reported Sunday that some 50,000 Russia and North Korean troops are set to take part in the assault. Reports that North Korea was sending troops to Russia began appearing last month, though both countries dismissed the allegations at the time. Russia and North Korea, both pariahs in the West, have forged increasingly friendly ties since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine invaded the Kursk region over the summer, shocking Russia, in the first invasion of the country since World War II.

London CNN —British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will travel to France on Monday to attend Armistice commemorations in Paris, making him the first UK leader to attend the ceremony since World War II, according to his office. Starmer will join French and British veterans alongside French President Emmanuel Macron to honor those who died in World War I as well as veterans of subsequent conflicts, according to No. “I am honored to be in Paris to stand united with President Macron in tribute to the fallen of the First World War who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today,” Starmer said. CNN —A “very rare” 77-year-old slice of the cake served at Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s wedding sold for £2,200 ($2,800) this week, according to auction house Reeman Dansie. The cake, which no longer looks edible, survived for almost eight decades since the wedding day on November 20, 1947. Reeman DansieElizabeth and Philip’s wedding cake was an extravagant, nine-foot tall (2.7 meters) creation, which weighed 500 pounds. Meanwhile, cake served at Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding and then kept in plastic wrap in an old cake tin similarly sold for £1,850 (then $2,565) at an auction in 2021. That 40-year-old cake slice featured a coat-of-arms colored in gold, red, blue and silver, a silver horseshoe and leaf spray, as well as some white decorative icing.

Police in Germany arrested eight suspected members of a far-right militant organization early Tuesday, Germany’s public prosecutor said. It said its members, including the arrested suspects, repeatedly completed paramilitary training in combat gear, practiced specifically urban warfare, firearms handling and other skills.
