[PRO] Possible S&P 5% pullback Earlier this week, the S&P 500 fell for three consecutive days, the first time since early September. The influence of the meridian sunspot over the rising moon, for instance, could cast a shadow over the S&P and cause it to slip. The bad news is that markets might again be swayed more strongly by emotions – as the word "relief" suggests.

Where Vanguard sees opportunity to earn income right now

With the Federal Reserve rate-cutting cycle now underway, income investors may want to take a closer look at their portfolios. In this environment, Vanguard likes higher-quality, fixed-income assets. However, with high yield credit, Vanguard is focusing on bottom-up security selection due to the dispersion among issuers. CCC-rated bonds gained 12.5% year to date, as of Sept 30, versus the 4.3% return in AA credit, according to Vanguard. Individual investors can get access to corporate credit through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds comprising investment-grade or high-yield bonds.

Dover on Thursday reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter results, pressuring shares of the industrial conglomerate with ties to AI data centers. Dover Why we own it : We own Dover as an industrial turnaround story with exposure to mega-themes, most notably the data center buildout to support artificial intelligence computing. That created headlines that implied Dover cut its full-year guidance, but in reality executives warned in advance that sales growth and earnings projections would be altered. To be sure, we are restricted from trading Dover's stock for the next 72 hours because Jim Cramer on Thursday mentioned the company on CNBC TV. Dover considers those areas its "growth platforms," and their increasing share of the portfolio carries positive implications for Dover's margins.

Investors have been increasingly on edge about the prospect of former President Donald Trump winning the election, a possibility for which Wall Street has been preparing to a greater extent. While polls remain effectively dead-even, Trump’s prospects have grown since the start of this month in political betting markets. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the decline, ending the day down by 1.6%; while the S&P 500 and Dow both fell about 1%. Recent strong economic data has led traders to question whether the central bank might maintain higher rates for longer than anticipated. The current market environment suggests continued volatility ahead, said Torres, warning of the potential for further yield curve steepening and increased market turbulence ahead.

The International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for the US economy to 2.8% this year. AdvertisementThe International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for the US, projecting the world's largest economy would expand by 2.8% this year instead of the 2.6% it predicted in July. However, they predicted GDP growth would slow to 2.2% in 2025 as the US government curbs its spending and the labor market cools, sapping consumption. The IMF projected global growth of 3.2% in both 2024 and 2025, virtually unchanged from its previous prediction. They underscored their latest forecast for global growth over the next five years of 3.1% was "mediocre" compared with the pre-pandemic average.

Municipal bonds not only offer solid, tax-free income — they should also see some capital appreciation later this year, according to UBS. Consumers are still spending and the combination of job growth, higher wages and slowing inflation should continue to push households' real disposable income higher, he added. Further, the longer end of the muni bond yield curve is also starting to look attractive, he said. Investors hoping to take a diversified approach to municipal bonds may want to consider an exchange-traded fund. "The global battle against inflation is almost won," the IMF report trumpeted, even as it called for "a policy triple pivot" to address interest rates, government spending, and reforms and investment to boost productivity. The fund kept its global growth estimate at 3.2% for 2024 and 2025 — which it called "stable yet underwhelming." Market volatility among key downside risksHeightened financial volatility is another threat to global growth, the IMF report said. Further challenges to global financial markets could come in the final stretch of the fight against inflation. The IMF forecasts global growth will rise 3.1% annually at the end of the 2020s, the lowest level in decades.

Howard Schnapp | Newsday | Getty ImagesThe tide could be turning for commercial real estate. That could give interest rate-sensitive sectors such as commercial real estate long-awaited positive momentum. While lower rates are not a "magic bullet," the easing of the Fed's monetary policy "lays the groundwork for a commercial real estate recovery," analysts wrote in a follow-up report in late September. More than $40 billion in transactions occurred during the second quarter, a 13.9% jump quarter over quarter, but still 9.4% lower year over year, according to real estate data intelligence firm Altus Group. While these dynamics could set the stage for a broader recovery, with some major subsectors such as commercial retail real estate picking up in tandem, the path forward will likely be uneven.

Intel products sold in China have been recommended for a security review by local officials who allege that the U.S. chipmaker poses "serious risks" to national security. CSAC further accused Intel of using remote management features to surveil users while covertly installing backdoors and of failing to address defects reported by users. Daniel Newman, CEO of The Futurum Group, noted the security review comes amid increased tensions between China and the U.S. in regard to chip controls and AI leadership. China accounted for 27.4% of Intel's revenue in 2023, making it vital to the company's bottom line at a time its stock is struggling following poor earnings and job cuts. However, under U.S. chip policy, the company has been restricted from exporting some of its most advanced products to Chinese clients.

A soft landing occurs when economic growth slows just enough to bring down inflation below the Federal Reserve's 2% target without tipping the economy into a recession. She thinks the economy is experiencing a no-landing scenario as it continues to expand without slowing down. "So far, clearly bank earnings are coming in better than expected, both top line and bottom line. "The other thing that that's showing [is] that our call for the 'no landing' is actually playing out." It's not just bank earnings that point to solid economic growth.
