Because a lot of bank branches were still closed, and the crew wanted their money, he requested that we transfer the money via Zelle. When I asked Chase to discuss Zelle fraud, I received an email saying, "Unfortunately, we don't have anyone available for an interview." The way the email messages from Gary were subliterate in a completely different way from the way a classic Gary email is subliterate. When Gary Kruglitz told us to Zelle him, he didn't really tell us to Zelle him. It's possible that the government will eventually be moved to safeguard consumers against Zelle fraud.

There has been a dramatic increase in reports of child labor — and workplace accidents involving kids. Overall, the Department of Labor said it had seen a 69% increase in illegal child labor over the previous five years. On Saturday, Seema Nanda, the US solicitor of labor, said she is examining whether companies can be held liable for contractors' labor practices. "We are long past the day when brands can say that they don't know that they have child labor in their supply chain," Nanda told the Times. It has also begun a third-party audit of its child labor policies, the spokesperson said.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hundreds of communities around the country will share more than $1 billion in federal money to help them plant and maintain trees under a federal program that is intended to reduce extreme heat, benefit health and improve access to nature. U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will announce the $1.13 billion in funding for 385 projects at an event Thursday morning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedar Rapids has made the restoration of its tree canopy a priority since that storm, called a derecho, and will receive $6 million in funding through the new grants. She told reporters earlier that many communities have lacked access to nature and that all the tree grants would benefit marginalized and underrepresented communities. “Urban forests can really play a key role in ensuring both that access but also increasing the climate resilience of communities, helping reduce extreme heat and making communities more livable.”The federal money comes from the Inflation Reduction Act.

The indictment comes after Biden's plea deal with the feds related to two tax charges fell through in late July. While Thursday's indictment includes three gun charges, it does not include the tax charges. A plea deal with no time behind bars was an unusually good bargain, he said.

The solution to keep prices under control seems fairly simple: Just build more housing. For a time, sprawl boosted housing supply and accommodated newcomers to the West: Nearly 60 million more people live in the region now compared with the 1950s. Running out of landWhen the economy crashed in 2008, housing construction screeched to a halt. All this red tape has caused a serious slowdown in much-needed housing construction. Build, build, buildDespite the unique challenges of building in the paradoxically wide-open West, some cities have been able to break through.

The government should reduce the interest rate on federal student loans, and forgive any that's accrued. Half of Americans support forgiving up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, a figure that soars to 83% among those who have student loans. Forgiving all student loan debt still maintains 39% support, a remarkably high figure for a fiscal policy that even a decade ago would have been an utter non-starter politically. Americans owe just south of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. As a result, an equitable solution is this: retroactively adjust the interest rate on federal student loans to be at or near zero.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) closed lower and the euro jumped in the aftermath of the data, with markets now bracing for the last day of a gloomy August. Expectations are still hovering around a 50-50 chance of another ECB hike, with the focus on preliminary euro zone CPI data due later in the day. Meanwhile, Chinese stocks were looking glum again in the Asian morning after an official factory survey showed manufacturing activity slowed for a fifth month straight.

Texas National Guardsmen set up a secret spying mission by using WhatsApp to snoop on migrants, a watchdog found. Top brass in Operation Lone Star — a state-run effort to combat illegal immigration — "wanted to pretend it was like Iraq," one servicemember told The Texas Tribune and The Military Times. Insider has reached out to the Texas National Guard for comment. After whistleblowers reported the WhatsApp surveillance, leaders in the Texas National Guard shut down Operation Lone Star's intelligence unit, the report said. The Texas Military Department's inspector general also investigated the activity and determined it was an unauthorized foreign intelligence operation, the outlets reported.

CNN —Whether they are called district attorneys, state’s attorneys or something else, the job of local prosecutors has traditionally flown under the national political radar. In fact, unlike the attorney general, a local district attorney cannot be fired by the president. The lesson for Meadows is that the local district attorney isn’t automatically bound by any deal with the feds. Willis and Bragg are not the only state prosecutors making headlines this year. Trump’s legal team is so fearful of state court that they have been fighting to “remove” his New York criminal case to federal court.

U.S. Rep. George Santos leaves the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Central Islip, New York, May 10, 2023. A man who was a paid campaign fundraiser for Rep. George Santos was indicted in New York on federal criminal charges related to his allegedly impersonating a top aide to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he solicited donations for Santos. Santos, who was first elected in 2022, represents a House district that covers parts of Queens in New York City, and Nassau County in Long Island. McCarthy, a California Republican, has defended Santos' right to continue serving in the House even as he fights his own criminal charges. Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs federal court after a plea hearing on two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes in Wilmington, Delaware, July 26, 2023. But Hunter Biden's lawyers also said in a new Delaware federal court filing that a second agreement with prosecutors that would allow him to escape conviction for a gun-related crime is "valid and binding." Lawyers for Hunter Biden told a judge that federal prosecutors on Friday decided to "renege" on a previously agreed deal in which the son of President Joe Biden would plea guilty to tax crimes in exchange for a recommended no-jail sentence. A key sticking point for the judge was the requirement that she, not the U.S. Department of Justice, be the one to decide if Hunter Biden violates the gun agreement over a two-year period. After Noreika said she would give prosecutors and defense lawyers more time to answer her questions, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the tax crimes.

Prosecutors told Judge Aileen Cannon that Trump is not entitled — as he has requested — to review or discuss any classified information in the case in a newly constructed sensitive compartmented information facility in one of his homes. Federal prosecutors on Monday said former President Donald Trump is seeking "special treatment that no other defendant would receive" in the criminal case accusing him of retaining classified documents at his Florida club after leaving the White House . "In essence, he is asking to be the only defendant ever in a case involving classified information (at least to the Government's knowledge) who would be able to discuss classified information in a private residence," the filing said. Prosecutors want Cannon to order that Trump and his lawyers only be allowed to discuss classified information within special secured locations, also known as SCIFs. The filing said that the proposed protective order that prosecutors are seeking "reflects standard procedures for handling classified information in criminal cases and is consistent with the law."

Disney CEO Bob Iger's comments regarding the strikers may hint at his deeper M&A state of mind.
