CNN —Tory Lanez, the man convicted of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office told CNN. Stallion accused Lanez of shooting her in the foot after she exited a vehicle they had been riding in following an argument. At a press conference following the sentencing on Tuesday, LA County District Attorney George Gascón explained how Lanez attempted to “silence” Stallion after she accused him of shooting her in 2020. But if it can happen to me, imagine those who lack the resources and support systems to help them,” Stallion said, according to the district attorney. Disney CEO Bob Iger on Thursday rejected Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' campaign rhetoric against the company, calling the Republican presidential candidate's attacks "preposterous and inaccurate." Following Disney's criticism, the Florida officials targeted the special tax district that for decades had allowed Walt Disney World to essentially self-govern its Florida operations. A DeSantis campaign spokesman declined to comment on Iger's remarks, telling CNBC, "The governor's statements to date are our position." The lengthy interview Thursday morning came less than a day after Disney announced that Iger would stay on as CEO through 2026.

June 15 (Reuters) - Nine women have filed a lawsuit in Nevada accusing comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault, the latest in a long series of misconduct allegations against the once-beloved entertainer. The complaint arrived just weeks after the state enacted a "lookback" law eliminating a two-year window for sexual assault victims to bring civil claims, following the lead of several other states. The Nevada lawsuit accuses Cosby of drugging each victim with drinks or pills before assaulting them, a pattern that matches allegations from other women, including Constand. Lili Bernard, one of the plaintiffs in Nevada, has separately sued Cosby in New Jersey for an alleged assault in 1990 under a similar law. Last year, a California jury found that Cosby sexually assaulted teenager Judy Huth at the Playboy Mansion in 1975 and ordered him to pay her $500,000.

When the homeowners—executives based in Austin, Texas—bought their 10,000-square-foot Wolcott, Colo., home in 2020, it was special in more ways than one. The husband—an investor who works in construction—had grown up in Chicago, and still had friends and family there. Now, as an adult, Wolcott, situated around 116 miles west of Denver, served as the perfect halfway point between Illinois and Texas for him and his wife, an executive at a commercial real estate and property management group, to host friends, family and clients. To help them transform the home into an entertainer’s paradise, they reached out to interior designer Meredith Owen, who previously worked on their Austin home.

In Venezuela, a series of corruption scandals opened a power vacuum that Hugo Chávez easily filled with populist appeals, leading to to an authoritarian government that, by the time of his death, oversaw a country racked by crises. When the U.N.-backed group that had investigated Molina began looking into Morales as well, he expelled it from the country. The United States has not had a massive corruption scandal that sent politicians to courtrooms and jail cells and decimated faith in its political parties. That kind of institutional weakness creates an opening for outsider politicians who might once have been kept out of politics by robust political parties. In Italy, Berlusconi presided over and helped maintain decades of weak coalition governments and political turmoil, not to mention the multiple corruption scandals he landed in.

Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer, songwriter and entertainer whose off-hand, English-language cameo on "The Girl from Ipanema" made her a worldwide voice of bossa nova, has died at age 83. "The Girl from Ipanema," the wistful ballad written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, was already a hit in South America. In a 2002 interview with friends posted on her web site, Astrud Gilberto remembered her husband saying he had a surprise for her at the recording studio. "When we were finished performing the song, Joao turned to Stan, and said something like: 'Tomorrow Astrud sing on record… What do you think?' Astrud Gilberto sings "The Girl from Ipanema" in a light, affectless style that influenced Sade and Suzanne Vega among others, as if she had already moved on to other matters.

Back then it was a voguish noun, borrowed from French, that described the unconscious structure of an ideology or a text. Soon, though, like so many other efforts to think critically, “the problematic” got left behind in this century’s great shift from reading to scrolling. These days we encounter “problematic” exclusively as an adjective: an offhand judgment of moral disapproval, from a speaker who can’t be bothered by precision. A whole cast of professional art workers — conservators, designers, guards, technicians — has been roped in to produce “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby,” a small exhibition opening Friday at the Brooklyn Museum. Like the noun-turned-adjective “problematic,” this new exhibition backs away from close looking for the affirmative comforts of social-justice-themed pop culture.

Why Ron DeSantis Is Struggling
  + stars: | 2023-05-05 | by ( Nate Cohn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Mr. DeSantis will probably never be an entertainer like Mr. Trump, an orator like Ronald Reagan, or someone to get a beer with like George W. Bush. It let him channel the passions of the Republican base and get on Fox News without offending bourgeoise conservative sensibilities on race, immigration and gender. In the last presidential primary, in 2016, Mr. Trump held the center of the Republican electorate and left his opposition split on either side. After all, there’s plenty of room to line up to the right of “woke” without alienating anyone on the right. Trying to be to the right of Mr. Trump, on the other hand, involves greater risk regarding both the general electorate and his relatively moderate supporters.
