Mr. Trump was rushed off the stage, blood visible around his right ear. The Secret Service said its personnel had killed the shooter. Secret Service agents then rushed Mr. Trump off the stage. President Biden said in a prime-time Oval Office address on Sunday that the nation needed to “lower the temperature in our politics,” saying that he deplored the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump and feared for the direction of the country’s politics. “We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America,” he said, using the backdrop of the office for only the third time in his presidency. “There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever. No exceptions. Republicans said the convention would proceed as planned, and Mr. Trump flew to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon, vowing to remain “defiant in the face of wickedness.”

But political violence hasn’t stopped since then. The nation is also still processing the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. In one of the most poignant reactions, Giffords said in a statement, “Political violence is terrifying. I know.” She added: “I’m holding former President Trump, and all those affected by today’s indefensible act of violence in my heart. Political violence is un-American and is never acceptable – never.”Unfortunately, history suggests that violence, while indefensible, is also a quintessential scar on American politics.

Biden, for his part, came off as chastened during the news conference and was less defiant than in previous appearances. President Biden on Thursday answered questions from reporters about foreign policy, whether he is up to defeating former President Donald J. Trump and why he is resisting calls from Democrats to end his candidacy, as he sought to recover from a crisis of confidence that has engulfed his campaign. With a growing number of Democratic lawmakers, donors and elected officials urging Mr. Biden to drop out of the race after a disastrous debate performance last month, the closing news conference of a NATO summit in Washington became a high-stakes chance for the president to quiet concerns about his candidacy. The results were mixed. Mr. Biden stumbled early but remained defiant in the face of questions about his fitness to continue his campaign. He struggled to articulate a cohesive case for his candidacy, even as he gave a forceful defense of his record and showed a strong command over foreign policy.

Every Monday morning on The Point, we kick off the week with a tipsheet on the latest in the presidential campaign. Here’s what we’re looking at this week:The attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a rally Saturday will probably fundamentally change the messaging and direction of the presidential campaign and enhance Trump’s standing, at least in the near term. It created an indelible image and captured the essence of Trump’s MAGA movement: under attack but defiant, bloody but unbowed. As a person who spent the first part of my career as a graphic designer and art director, I immediately saw the visual power and nearly infinite graphic possibilities of this image. Victimization: Trump has spent much of his time in presidential politics concocting a narrative of victimization, insisting that he and his movement were under attack and needed to fight back to save “our country.” He, and his supporters who were killed and injured, can now portray themselves as legitimate victims.

Making them waitPresident Biden hasn’t let up on his aggressive defense against calls to step aside: Over the past 24 hours, he pushed back against Democratic lawmakers, the news media and top fund-raisers. But an attempt to mollify some of his biggest donors in a hastily arranged call started off poorly: It began more than 30 minutes late. For the Biden campaign, that may not be a big concern, given its highlighting of small-dollar fund-raising and attacking of corporate greed. Biden started the day lashing out at elite critics. After a weekend of campaigning in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, he sent a defiant letter to congressional Democrats pledging to stay in the race.

President Biden’s defiant call on Democrats in Congress on Monday to stop questioning his viability and fall in line behind his candidacy did little to quell the groundswell of skepticism within his own party that has engulfed his campaign. As lawmakers returned to Washington after a weeklong recess, there were few signs that any of Mr. Biden’s efforts to reassure his allies — either through a bluntly worded letter or a phone interview on MSNBC — had done much to mollify growing Democratic anxieties. Instead, ahead of a day of crucial meetings in which Democrats in the House and the Senate plan to meet separately to discuss a way forward, lawmakers were still openly agonizing over their presumptive nominee, with party divisions about the best course bursting into the open. And more prominent Democrats came forward to air their concerns about Mr. Biden’s path to victory in November. “With so much at stake in the upcoming election, now is the time for conversations about the strongest path forward,” Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia and the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, said in a statement.

CNN —President Joe Biden told top donors on a video call Monday that he is still the best candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump as the Biden campaign and the White House sought to move beyond a crisis threatening to consume the Democratic Party. “It’s still a huge hole to climb out of,” the Democratic donor said, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign. While the Biden campaign has pointed to a rush of small-dollar donations over the past week, a senior adviser said the falloff among high-dollar contributors was highly troubling. Morgan blamed Biden’s campaign team for his debate performance and argued that Vice President Kamala Harris is in place “if something happens” to Biden. "Look, I have a cognitive test every day," he said in an interview on Friday with ABC News. Samuel Corum/Getty ImagesCompared to Trump, Biden has released far more comprehensive medical information, with the most recent update coming in February of 2024. One cognitive test is not sufficient to detect issues, doctors told the Wall Street Journal. In it, Dr. Bruce Aronwald said that he has conducted "several comprehensive examinations" and called Trump's cognitive exams "exceptional." President Biden’s increasingly emphatic declarations that he will not exit the presidential race are delivering an unmistakable message to potential wayward Democrats: Any criticisms going forward damage the party’s chances against Donald J. Trump. For days, Mr. Biden has said he will remain his party’s nominee after his poor debate short of an intervention from “the Lord Almighty.” On Monday, he put that assertion into action. It began with an open letter to congressional Democrats saying he was definitely running. “I am not going anywhere,” Mr. Biden told the donors. The moves amounted to a show of defiance that the Biden operation hoped would earn him some deference, as uneasy Democratic lawmakers trickled back to Capitol Hill after a holiday break.

President Biden spoke directly to some of his biggest fund-raisers and donors on Monday, repeating his assertion that he was staying in the race and telling them they needed to shift the focus of the campaign away from him and onto former President Donald J. Trump. “I have one job, to beat Donald Trump,” Mr. Biden said on a call with his campaign’s National Finance Committee, adding that he was “the best person” to do that, according to a listener who relayed the president’s remark to The New York Times. He said it was time to put Mr. Trump in the “bull’s-eye,” according to a second listener. The president’s 19-minute remarks to donors amounted to the most formal entreaty to his financiers since his poor debate performance over a week ago that they should stay the course. His appearance, which was announced to his fund-raisers just 24 minutes before the call was set to begin, came after he sent a defiant letter to congressional Democrats on Monday morning rejecting the idea that he should drop out and gave an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in which he invited challengers to try to stop him at the party’s convention next month.

President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats increasingly appear to be on a collision course. Reporters are going to be asking any Democratic lawmaker in sight whether they believe Biden should remain their party's nominee against former President Donald Trump. As of Monday morning, five House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step aside, while two have pointedly said that he can't win. AdvertisementAll of this makes the week ahead extremely important for Biden and the Democratic Party. The worst possible outcome for Biden is that a public consensus emerges among congressional Democrats that he must go, and that party leaders follow suit by issuing calls for him to drop out.

“If any of these guys don’t think I should run, run against me,” he said. Challenge me at the convention.”This could be the most crucial week of Biden’s presidency, as he is facing calls to drop out from his own party. His performance will be scrutinized by Democrats to assess whether he can handle the off-the-cuff pressure that he struggled with during his debate with Donald Trump. Biden also made his most formal entreaty to top donors since the debate, in a 19-minute call today. The president repeated that he was staying in the race and said they needed to shift the focus of the campaign away from him and onto Trump.

President Biden on Monday dared his critics to “challenge me at the convention” if they want him out of the presidential race, refusing to step aside in a defiant letter to Democratic members of Congress and in fiery remarks on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program. Declaring himself “frustrated by the elites” who have called for his exit from the race, Mr. Biden engaged in an offensive blitz aimed at saving his candidacy. In effect, Mr. Biden decided to engage in a no-holds-barred fight with his allies for the world to see. He was at turns defiant, furious, indignant, exasperated and dismissive. He insisted that he would not withdraw from the race but accused those who have suggested he step aside of being routinely wrong about politics.

The House Democrats who said Biden should drop out of the 2024 race were Reps. Adam Smith of Washington, Jerry Nadler of New York, Mark Takano of California and Joe Morelle of New York. Some House Democrats in battleground districts are weighing whether to distance themselves from Biden. "President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service," she wrote in a post to X. During the interview, Biden dismissed the calls for him to step aside and said only the "Lord Almighty" could get him to reconsider his presidential bid. "Look, I mean, if the Lord Almighty came down and said, 'Joe, get out of the race,' I'll get out of the race," Biden said during the interview.

He's done little to turn things around since and appears to be in denial over the damage done to his campaign. Biden's poor performance led to a Democrat freak out and growing calls for Biden to step aside. Neither sentiment is likely to satisfy the many Democrats who have serious concerns about Biden's mental acuity and electability.
