And because the internet is an endless expanse of Content, this has spurred a reverse trend, where women and nonbinary people have wanted to weigh in with their own Roman Empires, loosely defined as the topics one privately contemplates more than anyone realizes. forward: “I think about just so many different things all at once. Vaynblat has multiple Roman Empires, too — the alien one and then a more serious one: motherhood. A friend who will stay.”Min Jin Lee, author of the novel “Pachinko,” described her equivalent of the Roman Empire as “Colonial America,” a subject of her college thesis. In particular, Lee said she often sees “obsequiousness” to France and England as common throughout American institutions.

CNN —The convicted murderer who escaped a Pennsylvania prison late last month is once again behind bars, now facing additional charges, after a nearly two-week manhunt that captured national attention and put the surrounding community on edge. Officers escort Danilo Cavalcante from a Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Avondale on Wednesday. “He said the law enforcement presence where he was, was immense and he felt that he needed to leave,” Clark said. “Three times, he described that law enforcement officials almost stepped on him within 7 or 8 yards,” Clark said. Prosecutors say Cavalcante stabbed Brandão 38 times in front of her two young children in Pennsylvania in April 2021.

“Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said Wednesday. The theft and shooting ultimately may have been a turning point in the intense search by hundreds of law enforcement officers. About 500 law enforcement officers – including the Pennsylvania State Police, FBI, ATF, and the US Marshals – searched the area of the shooting. At 8:18 a.m., a Chester County dispatcher said they had their man. “The radio room, Chester County government and the various other agencies working on the prisoner escape are proud to announce the subject is in custody.

An hour-and-a-half drive away from the museum – and roughly 9,000 feet above it – stands Mount Evans, a popular tourist destination and towering testament to a key figure behind the massacre. It can be replaced with a name that brings healing.”Now, yearslong efforts to rename Mount Evans are tantalizingly close to fruition. JoyHeart emphasizes that the ongoing conversation about changing the name of Mount Evans highlights the enduring influence of historical events on present-day Native communities. Interior Department on Wednesday said it would cancel oil and gas leases in a federal wildlife refuge that were bought by an Alaska state development agency in the final days of former President Donald Trump's administration. Environmentalists and an Alaska indigenous group praised the move while a Republican Senator from Alaska slammed it. A Republican-passed tax bill in 2017 opened the area to oil and gas leasing and directed Interior to hold two lease sales by December 2024. The oil and gas industry largely failed to embrace the 2021 lease sale, which generated just $14 million in high bids, mostly from AIDEA. “We commend Secretary Haaland for canceling unlawfully issued oil-and-gas leases in the Arctic Refuge,” Abigail Dillen, president of environmental group Earthjustice, said in a statement.

How to Win at Monopoly
  + stars: | 2023-08-31 | by ( Deb Amlen | More About Deb Amlen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When I look back at my child-rearing years, one of the most enduring emotions I felt — besides intense love and sleep deprivation — was absolute dread when my kids brought out the Monopoly set. Monopoly on it, because I immediately realized two things:The game was unlikely to end before their bedtimes, and possibly not within my lifetime. Maybe it’s the human inclination to not only keep up with the Joneses, but to really rub the Jones’s noses in it that brings out the competitive killer in Monopoly players. Either way, the goal of this game, according to the rules, is to win by ending with more money and real estate under your control than your opponents. And by “end,” the instructions mean driving the other players to bankruptcy, which is always a cheery way to wrap up a family get-together.

Law enforcement agencies were searching late Thursday for a Brazilian man who escaped from a prison near Philadelphia, days after he was sentenced to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of his former girlfriend, the authorities said. The inmate, Danelo Cavalcante, escaped from the Chester County Prison Thursday morning, the local district attorney’s office said on X, formerly known as Twitter. The prison’s acting warden, Howard Holland, declined to comment at a news conference on how or why the escape occurred, saying only that it was under investigation. Deb Ryan, the Chester County district attorney, said at the news conference that Mr. Cavalcante was last seen walking southbound in the county’s Pocopson Township that morning wearing a white T-shirt, gray shorts and white sneakers.

The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition released a new list of Indigenous boarding schools Wednesday that surpasses the number of previously reported institutions. The list of Indigenous boarding schools in the United States includes many that have closed and some that are still in operation today. It found the federal government ran or supported 408 boarding schools that forced assimilation between 1819 and 1969. The list also includes 125 schools that are currently open and that were or are considered Indigenous boarding schools. The legislation provided religious organizations with the resources to run more than a hundred schools for Native American children.

‘War Against the Children’

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

To maintain profitability, insurance companies have to take in more in monthly premium payments from customers than they pay out in damage claims. This has prompted insurance companies to back out of certain markets or pressure states to raise caps on premiums. Without robust rate caps such as those in California, insurance costs have risen by over 200% while DeSantis has been in office. He also signed legislation in December that protects insurance companies from liability claims and disincentivizes homeowners from filing claims to begin with. Despite these policies, insurance prices have continued to go up and insurers have continued to flee the market.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the strong objections of the island's government. "This is a serious warning against Taiwan independence separatist forces colluding with external forces to provoke," it said. China has a particular dislike of Lai for his previous comments that he was a "practical worker for Taiwan independence". The United States, like most countries, has no formal ties with Taiwan but is its strongest international backer, bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself. China has over the past three years ramped up military pressure on Taiwan, including sending military aircraft and warships near the island.

Taiwan's Vice President William Lai speaks during a welcome dinner in Asuncion, Paraguay, in this handout picture released on August 15, 2023. Taiwanese officials say China could launch military drills this week, using Lai's stopovers in the United States as a pretext to intimidate voters ahead of an election next year and make them "fear war". China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has an particular dislike of Lai who has in the past described himself as a "practical worker for Taiwan independence". China considers Taiwan to be its most sensitive and important political and diplomatic issue, and it is a constant source of Sino-U.S. friction. China says Taiwan has no right to state-to-state ties and has been trying to pick off Taiwan's remaining diplomatic allies.

REUTERS/Leah Millis/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLAS VEGAS, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Daemein Hargrove, 21, recently dropped plans for a four-year college degree to sign up for an apprenticeship program in Las Vegas that he says has given him higher pay, good medical benefits and a pension. But he's also shouldering gas costs of $500 a month as he commutes to a massive solar site 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit Monday to the Las Vegas training center where Hargrove and nearly 700 other apprentices are being paid to work and learn new skills raises some questions about Biden's approach. Yellen's trip to Las Vegas won praise from union leaders, but drew scant public or local media attention. Maryviolet | Istock | Getty ImagesResearch suggests it's best to hold off on claiming Social Security retirement benefits until age 70, if possible, to get the biggest monthly payments available to you. That includes 17% of respondents ages 60 to 65, who may be on the brink of retirement, according to the results. Why it pays to wait to claim Social Security benefitsEarly claiming will affect the size of your monthly Social Security checks. For each year delayed past full retirement age to age 70, 8% is added to Social Security benefits. By waiting up to age 70, retirees can lock in the biggest benefit checks available based on their work records.

Make it a cool pickle summer with this easy method

Sure, you can preserve food with a more advanced water-bath canning method, especially if you’re planning to save your summer pickles for up to a year. Or add pickled vegetables such as green beans or cauliflower to a grain salad or grain bowl as a topping. While pickled vegetables are always welcome in pasta salad (and potato salad, for that matter), they also bring an unexpected zing to hot pasta recipes. Or add pickled shallots, broccoli or peppers to pesto-sauced noodles. And when it’s too hot to think of anything else to do, there’s always “snack dinner” with a variety of pickled vegetables to save the day.
