REUTERS/Sarah MeyssonnierCANNES, May 26 (Reuters) - Film legend Isabella Rossellini graced the Cannes Film Festival's red carpet on Friday for the premiere of Italian drama "La Chimera," director Alice Rohrwacher's third attempt to take home the top prize against 20 other competitors this year. Set in the 1980s, "La Chimera" follows the ups and down of Arthur and the grave robbers, known as tombarola, as they look for ancient tombs with any antiques they can sell illicitly. "Where I grew up it was common to hear stories of secret finds, clandestine digs and mysterious adventures," the Italian director said on the film's website.

The 76th edition of the festival, taking place from May 16 to May 27, has seen Cannes' usual population triple to 230,000 people to watch films, rub shoulders with celebrities, and - in some cases - compete for the coveted Palme D'Or. Gaillard, who is retiring after this festival, was there for Reuters, snapping Michael Douglas pointing at the camera with a cheeky grin and a besuited Harrison Ford receiving an Honorary Palme D'Or. He was there in 1997 when Michael Jackson was in attendance, in 2008 when Diego Maradona showed off soccer tricks, and in 2018 when Kristen Stewart kicked off her heels on the red carpet. A shot from the 48th edition of the festival in 1995 shows a disarmingly young Johnny Depp, while a black-and-white photo from 1987 depicts a tanned, bejeweled Liz Taylor with one-time flame George Hamilton.

Under a sweltering afternoon sun, Kaurismaki, 66, was joined on the red carpet by his lead actors Alma Poysti and Jussi Vatanen. "Club Zero" is Vienna-born Hausner's second film to be in the running for the film festival's top prize, after 2019's "Little Joe" that marked her English-language debut. In the film, new teacher Miss Novak (Wasikowska) leads a course on conscious eating for a group of teenage boarding school students that asks them to make increasingly drastic changes to their eating habits, with the goal of reaching "Club Zero." "Club Zero" is the latest in a series of independent films that Wasikowska has signed onto in the past few years.
