Subianto wrapped up the first stop of his first overseas trip since taking office three weeks ago. He is headed next to Washington — where the U.S. government is confronting China’s rise — and then to Peru and Brazil for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and Group of 20 summits. They agreed to hold a first-ever joint meeting of their foreign and defense ministers in 2025, a joint statement said. China also helped build Indonesia’s first high-speed railway, an 88-mile route between Jakarta and Bandung that opened last year. But a flood of low-priced Chinese products has hit Indonesia’s garment makers hard, closing factories and prompting calls for import tariffs.

CNN —Dangerous wildfires are burning on the East and West coasts Monday, with firefighters in New York and New Jersey working to contain a deadly blaze spurred by an ongoing, historic drought – while strong winds in Southern California could fan a destructive fire in Ventura County. Nearly 600 wildfires have burned nearly 7,000 acres in New Jersey and New York since October 1, according to officials. Most of the fires were in New Jersey, where the state’s Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires. “We were fortunate that the fire started at 9 o’clock in the morning, with daylight,” said Jim Fryhoff, the sheriff of Ventura County. Agricultural officials assessing the impact on farmland planted with avocados, citrus, and berries have estimated the damage at $2.4 million, the Ventura County Star reported.

CNN —A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Cuba on Sunday, causing material damage in several regions as the island continues to recover from widespread blackouts and the impact of two hurricanes over the past few weeks. The municipality of Pilón has suffered “a lot of damage,” according to Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba. Residents in eastern Cuba told Reuters that the tremor was as powerful as any they’ve felt before. In other occasions, we’ve felt the earthquake but not as strong as now,” Griselda Fernandez said. A Spanish research vessel that investigates marine ecosystems has been abruptly diverted from its usual task to take on a new job: Helping in the increasingly desperate search for the missing from Spain’s floods. Carrera, 60, is head of the fleet of the research vessels run by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, a government-funded science center under the umbrella of the Spanish National Research Council. The boat also helped research the impact from the lava flow that reached the sea from the 2021 La Palma volcano eruption in Spain’s Canary Islands. Finding a body at sea, Carrera said, is highly unlikely. Those findings will contribute to initiatives by other Spanish research centers to study Spain’s deadliest floods of the century.

Police are still searching for 43 monkeys that escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday, as the head of the company revealed that the outbreak happened when a staff member failed to secure a door properly. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, confirmed Thursday night that the primates were in the wooded region surrounding the Alpha Genesis facility, in a rural area on the edge of Yamassee. Locals were urged to lock windows and doors and not to interact with the monkeys and instead call 911 immediately upon spotting any of the escaped primates. Alpha Genesis carries out medical research for a range of clients for several conditions, including brain disorders. Meanwhile, animal rights advocates have raised concerns over the ethics of using primates in medical research on such a scale.

Oil prices regain ground as investors eye U.S. election fallout
  + stars: | 2024-11-07 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged up on Thursday following a sell-off triggered by the U.S. presidential election, as risks to oil supply from a Trump presidency and a hurricane building in the Gulf Coast outweighed a stronger U.S. dollar and higher inventories. Brent crude oil futures rose 26 cents, or 0.35%, to $75.18 per barrel by 0125 GMT. Trump's election had initially triggered a sell-off that pushed oil prices down by more than $2 as the U.S. dollar rose to its highest level since September 2022. Donald Trump is expected to reimpose his "maximum pressure policy" of sanctions on Iranian oil. U.S. crude inventories rose by 2.1 million barrels to 427.7 million barrels in the week ending on Nov. 1, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday, compared with expectations for a 1.1 million-barrel rise.

Donald Trump owns 16 golf courses across three continents, mostly with vibrant social-media presences. AdvertisementAt President-elect Donald Trump's golf courses, his election posed a dilemma: Embrace the connection, or stay quiet? International courses in Dubai and Indonesia also kept quiet, as did the US courses in Los Angeles County and Hudson Valley, New York. But his victory does put a spotlight back on Trump's business empire, where companies could use the connections as a selling point or try to function like a business without a famous owner. Reuters estimated earlier this year that Trump's golf and resort business is the biggest driver of the Trump Organization's cash flow.
