CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

Caroline Ellison, whose testimony helped convict her former boss and ex-boyfriend, disgraced cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried, was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for fraud and conspiracy. Ellison, 29, accepted a plea deal to charges of conspiracy and financial fraud in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried was convicted of all seven criminal fraud charges against him and sentenced to 25 years in prison. A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued Tuesday for almost all of Florida's western coastline as a potential tropical storm moves across the Caribbean Sea and towards the Gulf Coast. The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — California avocado growers are fuming this week about a U.S. decision to hand over pest inspections of Mexican orchards to the Mexican government. Because the United States also grows avocados, U.S. inspectors observe orchards and packing houses in Mexico to ensure exported avocados don’t carry pests that could hurt U.S. crops. The letter added, "We are looking for specifics as to why you have concluded that substituting APHIS inspectors with Mexican government inspectors is in our best interest." Only the states of Michoacan and Jalisco are certified to export avocados to the United States. Some packers in Mexico buy avocados from other, non-certified states, and try to pass them off as being from Michoacan.

The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

A disturbance in the Caribbean Sea is expected to strengthen into a hurricane that will take aim at Florida midweek. A turn toward the northwest is expected Tuesday followed by an acceleration in speed toward the northeast on Wednesday and Thursday, the hurricane center said. A tropical storm is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher, and a hurricane of 74 mph or higher, according to the National Weather Service. A hurricane watch has been issued for Cabo Catoche in Tulum and for Pinar del Río. A tropical storm warning is in effect in Rio Lagartos in Tulum and Cuba's Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Isle of Youth, or Isla de la Juventud.

The next storm that could threaten the United States was beginning to take shape Monday afternoon among a swirl of thunderstorms off the shores of Honduras in the western Caribbean Sea, with forecasters saying there is a strong likelihood that it becomes Helene, the next name in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season storm list. Many of the forecast models that meteorologists use show the storm strengthening rapidly over the next few days before hitting somewhere along the central to eastern Gulf of Mexico coastline Thursday. This storm follows Francine, which spun across the western Gulf of Mexico this month. That storm struggled to organize and only slowly intensified into a weak Category 2 in the final few hours before making landfall in Louisiana and dropping a deluge of rainfall across New Orleans. If this storm system forms more quickly into a named storm across the Caribbean, it is more likely to become a hurricane or even a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico before it hits land.
