Goldman Sachs is turning bullish on Spotify after its solid earnings report this week. Analyst Eric Sheridan upgraded the streaming stock to buy from neutral and raised his 12-month price target by $105 to $425, suggesting nearly 29% potential upside. Spotify reported record quarterly earnings on Tuesday that sent shares up nearly 12%, marking the stock's biggest one-day gain since January 2023. He anticipates the upside scenario would be for the company to repurchase as much as roughly 25% of its current market cap through 2029. Sheridan expects Spotify could also see compounding revenue growth in the mid-teens in the next three to five years.

Strong numbers in the company's search and cloud businesses more than offset the slight misses in the YouTube and network units. Cloud recorded a couple of big firsts: exceeding $10 billion in revenue, along with $1 billion in operating income. Whereas investors were — and many still are — concerned about what generative AI might mean for Alphabet's search revenue, the opposite appears to be the case, at least for now. Google Cloud revenue grew roughly 28% to more than $10 billion for the first time. Buffett believes buybacks are beneficial to shareholders for one simple reason: You don't need to spend a dime to increase your percentage of shares held. "Through that simple act, we increase your share of the many controlled and non-controlled businesses Berkshire owns," Buffett said in his 2021 annual letter. The 93-year-old legendary investor believes that it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. "If you're repurchasing shares above a rationally calculated intrinsic value, you are harming your shareholders, just as if you issue shares beneath that figure, you are harming your shareholders," Buffett once said in 1996. The Wall Street firm projected that Berkshire repurchased almost $2.5 billion worth of stock in the second quarter.

Can Boeing get back to its glory days?

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.

Shares of Nordea Bank , the Finnish lender, have been labeled "too cheap to ignore" by investment bank Berenberg. Net interest income – earned through the differences in rates offered to savers and borrowers — grew 7% year-on-year to 3.86 billion euros. "Trading on only 7.5x our [financial year] 2025 earnings — an 8% premium to the sector — we think Nordea is too cheap to ignore. However, the Berenberg analyst believes that Nordea's net interest income is relatively resilient, noting that "the market still underappreciates Nordea's [net interest income] stability, in our view, which contrasts favourably to that of more rate-sensitive Nordic peers." The analyst also said that recent challenges, including a slight miss on second-quarter net interest income expectations or a modest cost increase, should not deter investors.

Corporations absolve their employees of responsibility by delegating decision-making to an algorithm or deferring to company policy. Sorry, it's company policyAccording to Davies, accountability sinks emerged over the past decades of privatization and technological innovation. In addition, middle management and customer service jobs were cut or outsourced as corporations prioritized profits, optimizing costs, and delivering strong quarterly earnings. It often looks like a customer service representative working within a system with limited options to help. Accountability sinks can range from customer service to decision-making at major corporations.

"Buying because the stock price has gone down without knowing some of the underlying issues or without understanding some of the underlying activities, could be problematic," says Clark Bellin, president and chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth. After all, a stock could take major losses and then soar to new heights à la Apple. But what about that same markdown in the price of that company's stock? You'll just have to figure some things out before you buy, says Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA. Rather than scrambling to do research, he says, keep a watchlist of stocks you'd be interested in buying at the right price.

Along with the top- and bottom-line numbers, Wall Street is also keeping close watch on net interest income and guidance. "We see the greatest sources of potential earnings upside being driven by higher loan growth and capital markets." Barclays analyst Goldberg anticipates a slight decrease in net interest income in the second quarter due to a compression in net interest margin. Last year, the company posted $21.9 billion in net interest income for the period. Despite expectations for seasonally lower trading, he also expects strong investment banking activity and net interest income to drive ongoing positive momentum.

WASHINGTON — A group of Democrats are raising concerns as to whether companies that received federal funding for semiconductors used the money to support stock buybacks - and criticizing their own party over how the awards are given. Raimondo has stated that CHIPS funding is not meant to pad companies' bottom lines or support stock buybacks. But lawmakers urged her to go further, and ban stock buybacks for companies that receive CHIPS funds. About $33 billion of funding from the CHIPS Act has been allocated, mostly to major companies. It also said decisions on buybacks were independent from any funds released through the CHIPS Act.
