Former US astronaut Frank Borman dies at 95

NASA astronaut Frank Borman in an undated photo. Borman served as the commander of Apollo 8, the first mission to fly around the world. Born in Gary, Indiana, on March 14, 1928, he was the oldest American astronaut still living; that mantle now passes to Jim Lovell, who is also 95 but eleven days younger. Like most of his fellow generation of astronauts, he trained as a test pilot before being selected for NASA's second astronaut program in 1962. In 1970 Borman retired from NASA and the Air Force and became an adviser to Eastern Airlines.

Apollo 8 carried three astronauts farther from Earth than anyone had ever traveled. It orbited the lunar surface 10 times, flying nearly 60 miles above its surface, to photograph a bleak and rock-strewn terrain, seeking potential landing spots for the moonwalks to come. Mr. Borman, who never set foot on the moon — and by his own account had no desire to do so — flew in space twice. In December 1965, he commanded the two-man Gemini 7 spacecraft on a 14-day flight that set what was then a record for time spent in space. Gemini 7 rendezvoused with Gemini 6A as it orbited Earth, a significant step toward perfecting a similar maneuver that would be required when astronauts reached the moon.

(AP) — Astronaut Frank Borman, who commanded Apollo 8's historic Christmas 1968 flight that circled the moon 10 times and paved the way for the lunar landing the next year, has died. Borman also led troubled Eastern Airlines in the 1970s and early '80s after leaving the astronaut corps. He and his crew, James Lovell and William Anders, were the first Apollo mission to fly to the moon — and to see Earth as a distant sphere in space. Astronaut Frank Borman was a true American hero,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement Thursday. In his book, "Countdown: An Autobiography," Borman said Apollo 8 was originally supposed to orbit Earth.

But investor concerns over an unevenness to the Macao recovery sparked selling in afterhours trading, sending Wynn stock down more than 5% — and creating a potential buying opportunity. Despite these positives, Thursday evening's sell-off brought Wynn stock to about $40 below the level at which was trading in 2019. However, the company's two properties in the region – Wynn Palace and Wynn Macao – are not enjoying an equal pace of recovery. In the third quarter of 2023, Wynn Macao generated about $78 million in profits, which when annualized is only $312 million. The weakness at Wynn Macao has the market concerned Thursday about a loss of market share.

Prosecutors contended Officer Nathan Woodyard's actions including the neck hold contributed to McClain's death. Here’s what you need to know about the criminal trials:WHY WERE THE OFFICERS AND PARAMEDICS CHARGED? Local prosecutors initially decided not to bring charges in McClain’s death largely because an initial autopsy didn’t determine exactly how he died. Defense attorneys for the officers repeatedly said it was the ketamine injection — not their clients — that caused McClain’s death. In Woodyard’s case, the defense brought in a paid expert witness who has also worked for the prosecution in the paramedic’s case.

The index is a forward-looking indicator of demand for non-residential construction activity, both commercial and industrial buildings. Commercial real estate has been hit with a double whammy. Among real estate sectors, firms with a multi-family residential focus saw more of a decline. Multi-family construction boomed over the last few years, with a record number of units now flooding the market and putting pressure on rents.

Zscaler could benefit from the growth of an emerging form of cybersecurity, according to Barclays. The firm upgraded the cloud security stock to overweight from equal weight and upgraded its price target to $190 from $176. Analyst Saket Kalia said the company's growing Zscaler for Workloads platform as well as a growth opportunity in the secure access service edge (SASE) cybersecurity segment underpinned the upgrade. The analyst added that growth in SASE cybersecurity could grow to become the same size or larger than regular network security protocols in three years, which could help propel Zscaler going forward. The iPhone maker in June announced its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset at an eyepopping price of $3,499 when it goes on sale next year. At its high price point, the Vision Pro will likely be more of a product for businesses, Seitz said. The five-year plan includes proposed sales in the Gulf of Mexico — the nation’s primary offshore source of oil and gas — in 2025, 2027 and 2029. The three lease sales are the minimum number the Democratic administration could legally offer if it wants to continue expanding offshore wind development. The lease program will guard against environmental damage caused by oil and gas drilling and other adverse impacts to coastal communities, Haaland said. “The (oil leasing) program is definitely informed by the IRA and the connection that the IRA makes between offshore oil and gas leasing and renewable energy leasing,” he said Thursday, referring to the Inflation Reduction Act. The Interior Department can’t sell the rights to drill for oil and gas offshore without first publishing a schedule that outlines its plans.

DENVER (AP) — Newly released surveillance video from a Denver theater appears to show Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert vaping during a “Beetlejuice” musical play — the one thing she denied doing while acknowledging earlier this week that she had been kicked out for being disruptive. Boebert and her guest were escorted out of the play Sunday after audience members accused two guests of vaping, singing, using phones and causing a disturbance, according to theater representatives and video from the publicly owned Buell Theater. When the lights were still on and as people were taking their seats around Boebert, she can be seen in the surveillance video talking with her companion. Boebert campaign manager Drew Sexton confirmed this week she had been kicked out but denied she was vaping.
