It is hunting for leaks of methane — an invisible, super-polluting gas that is dramatically warming the planet. Although it’s leaking less overall than the Permian Basin, for example, it’s an older basin — with older, leaky equipment — that’s producing far less oil and gas. Natural gas is flared Andrews, Texas, part of the Permian Basin, in March 2022. Dilapidated equipment tends to be leakier, and in parts of the Caspian Basin, gas is often treated as a waste product and vented or flared. But because of Venezuela’s proximity to the tropics and frequent cloud cover, capturing its methane emissions has proved challenging.

But if she had to pick between sweet potato and pumpkin — the two autumnal pies that have come to define the Thanksgiving season — the choice is a simple one: Sweet potato. But in many homes, particularly African American ones, sweet potato pie remains supreme. This abundance of sweet potatoes, both in pastry and other forms, led to sweet potato pie entering the soul food canon. Illustration by Leah Abucayan/CNNThe importance of sweet potato pie to African Americans has continued through generations. A few decades later, Georgia Gilmore sold sweet potato pies, and other food, to help fund the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

CNN —The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly agreed to a $182 million contract with two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, according to multiple outlets, including The Athletic and the Associated Press. His average of 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings is the highest ever recorded in major league history. Snell is also one of only seven pitchers to have won the Cy Young Award in both the American League and National League, having collected the award in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays and in 2023 with the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers reportedly made a move for Snell following his success in San Diego, but the Seattle native eventually ended up with the San Francisco Giants in mid-March of 2024. Ukraine's defense ministry issued a recall of 120mm artillery shells this week, citing defects in a recently delivered batch of rounds. The defective 120mm rounds — light artillery shells that Ukraine typically uses in mortars — were first reported in early November by Censor.Net, a local media outlet run by journalist Yuriy Butusov. Ukroboronprom and the Ukrainian Defense Ministry did not respond to requests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider. Globally, Ukraine's allies have also struggled to quickly scale up production of artillery shells. On November 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said domestic factories had produced 2.5 million artillery shells and mortar rounds in 2024 alone.

In the world of cheap drones, Skydio was the great American hope. Its autonomous flying machines gave the U.S. defense and police agencies an alternative to Chinese manufacturers, free from the security concerns tied to dependence on Chinese supply chains. But Skydio’s vulnerabilities came into sharp focus days before the U.S. presidential election, when the Chinese authorities imposed sanctions and severed the company’s access to essential battery supplies. Overnight, the San Mateo, Calif.-based Skydio, the largest American maker of drones, scrambled to find new suppliers. “This is an attack on Skydio, but it’s also an attack on you,” Adam Bry, the chief executive, told customers.

His wife, Georgia Dixon, said he died at a rehabilitation center. Created after the Civil War, the Army’s all-Black cavalry and infantry regiments were nicknamed “Buffalo Soldiers” by Native Americans who encountered them in the nation’s Western expansion. The name may have been a reference to the soldiers’ curly black hair or to the fierceness that buffalo show in fighting. — As President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration solidifies its plan for mass deportations, local law enforcement agencies are preparing to ramp up a controversial program that allows them to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the ability to perform certain functions of an immigration officer. According to ICE, as of May 2024, law enforcement agencies in 21 states participated in the program. Other critics have also said the 287(g) program merely serves as a political messaging tool for conservative sheriffs. The death of a 2-year-old western lowland gorilla at a Canadian zoo earlier this month was found to be the result of human error, the zoo announced. The care team member — intending to separate Eyare from other gorillas for an individual training session — accidentally activated the wrong door, striking the young gorilla, who sustained traumatic head injuries. The zoo said that they immediately launched a formal investigation into Eyare's death and removed the gorilla care team member responsible from the workplace following the incident. That member will be "reassigned to another area of the zoo and will undergo further staff training for that area." The zoo said they are also exploring the idea of transitioning to alternative door and control designs, instead of continuing to use hydraulic doors.
