Google Bard, the search firm's answer to ChatGPT, has underwhelmed early testers. Users in the US and UK trying out the AI chatbot find it pales in comparison to OpenAI's tech. The makers of the Twofer Goofer word puzzle found ChatGPT was much better at solving the brainteasers than Google's Bard. It's possible that the company does have a super impressive AI tool up its sleeve. Insider's Hugh Langley reported earlier in March that Google employees are testing a more intelligent version of Bard, nicknamed "Big Bard."
Explainer: What is the European Union AI Act?

Apart from uses of AI by companies, it will also look at AI used in public sector and law enforcement. A GPAIS (General Purpose AI System) is a category proposed by lawmakers to account for AI tools with more than one application, such as generative AI models like ChatGPT. The proposals say those found in breach of the AI Act face fines of up to 30 million euros or 6% of global profits, whichever is higher. WHEN WILL THE AI ACT COME INTO FORCE? The Act is being discussed by parliamentarians, and after they reach common ground, there will be a trilogue between representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission.
Bill Gates said in a blog post that ChatGPT will be like "having a white-collar worker" as an assistant. Gates said it was realistic that people would use AI as a digital personal assistant in the future. "Although humans are still better than GPT at a lot of things, there are many jobs where these capabilities are not used much," Gates wrote. "As computing power gets cheaper, GPT's ability to express ideas will increasingly be like having a white-collar worker available to help you with various tasks," Gates continued. Gates wrote that firms could also create company-wide agents which would have access to sales information, finance documents, product schedules, and industry news and which employees could consult.
He said that AI could help healthcare workers with productivity, especially in poorer countries. Gate's letter, titled "The Age of AI has Begun," outlines two main ways he thinks AI could change the healthcare and medical field in the next five to 10 years. Gates is a cofounder of Microsoft, the tech giant that's been working to incorporate new AI tools from OpenAI into its Bing search engine and Office software. AI could help healthcare workers with productivityGates said he expects to see a lot of innovation in AI that could help healthcare workers with efficiency and productivity. Gates said that the next generation of AI tools will be even more efficient, which will "dramatically accelerate the rate of medical breakthroughs."
A Microsoft executive said OpenAI's new model will be released this week, per a German news outlet. GPT-4 will be able to turn text into video, a feature already included in Google and Meta AIs. Braun added that the more powerful AI will be introduced this week, putting an end to speculation over its release. The OpenAI CTO, Mira Murati, has also said "I think less hype would be good," but added it may "broaden opportunities," per FastCompany. Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside US working hours.
Days before the explosions, a tanker called the Minerva Julie was drifting nearby in the Baltic Sea. He discovered that the Minerva Julie, a 600-foot Greek-flagged tanker, was headed east from Rotterdam when, on September 6, it came to an abrupt stop in the middle of the Baltic Sea. From September 6 through September 13, the Minerva Julie drifted near the site of the September 26 explosions, AIS data show. The Minerva Julie stayed there, alternately idling and crossing a roughly 200-square-nautical-mile area above the two natural-gas pipelines, for seven days, from September 6 until September 12. The analysts estimated Microsoft's recently announced generated AI sales features could help it take market share and potentially add over $768 million in annual revenue. Microsoft announced on Monday that it would integrate generative AI based on ChatGPT into a set of tools for business called CoPilot. One of its primary features is using AI to generate emails. Microsoft says that its AI email writer can take important context from the email thread, like the price that was previously discussed, and stick it in the response drafted by AI. Microsoft's feature is currently in beta testing, but will be released to customers of Microsoft's Viva Sales feature on March 15, the company said on Monday.
But that's futile, experts say, because the AI of today can't feel empathy, let alone love. We've spent years trying to get AI to love us back. Experts told Insider that it's futile to expect the AIs that exist right now to love us back. During a simulation in October 2020, OpenAI's GPT-3 chatbot told a person asking for psychiatric help to kill themselves. Halpern, the UC Berkeley professor, told Insider AI-based relationships are perilous also because the entity can be used as a money-making tool.
London CNN —Russian oil is still finding its way to buyers around the world. Industry insiders estimate the size of that “shadow” fleet at roughly 600 vessels, or about 10% of the global number of large tankers. Andrey Rudakov/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesThe expansion of the shadow fleet highlights the dramatic changes Russia’s war has brought to the global oil market. As a result, an estimated 25 to 35 vessels are being sold per month into the shadow fleet, according to another senior executive at an oil trading firm. There are also questions about who ultimately runs the shadow fleet.
I'm a writer who used GPT-3, an early version of OpenAI's viral chatbot, in 2021. Emily SenkoskyThis experience has given me some insight into what ChatGPT could mean for the future of the writing profession. If writers want ChatGPT to produce worthwhile work, they will need to give it large amounts of contextual data. When the internet becomes flooded with half-hearted AI writing, people working in editorial roles will need to set their writing apart with human touches. I think any future version of ChatGPT will need a human to fine-tune the final product.
The CEO of the far-right social network Gab wants to build an explicitly Christian AI. Insider asked ChatGPT whether it thinks it is satanic, to which it said no. Insider asked ChatGPT if it's satanic, and this was its response. Screenshot/ChatGPTIn his article, Torba asked: "If the enemy is going to use this technology for evil, shouldn't we be on the ground floor building one for good?" Insider asked ChatGPT what it thought of Torba's article, and was told it was "misguided."
Even the skeptics of the latest hype cycle recounted during the Town Hall numerous examples of how AI is already embedded in more efficient business processes. The arrival of ChatGPT and generative AI only a few years after the hype cycle over the metaverse has attracted both the AI bulls and bears as tech pursues its next big thing. Another executive who works with lawyers and accountants said the sentiment right now is that AI is not to replace lawyers, but "lawyers using AI are gonna replace lawyers." And what generative AI does, is really help you crunch, take your machine learning to, you know, the 'nth' level of the finite level. That may also place AI in the crosshairs of ESG investors, making sure that the ethics part is part of the mission of companies using it.
AI-boosted search engines from Microsoft and Google are set to change the way we search the web. New versions of Google Search and Bing are meant to give conversational answers to complex queries. It's "more like just asking a personal assistant to do something," an AI expert told Insider. Nadella said in media interviews Tuesday that the AI-powered overhaul of web search represented "a new paradigm" for the industry. The new search AIs draw their answers from the web at large, and information on the web isn't always accurate, to say the least.
Insider asked ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, to draft a layoff memo for a pretend tech company, Gomezon. After a little prodding, the chatbot wrote a layoff memo just as formulaic as the others. Surely it could compose a layoff memo of reasonable quality, right? ChatGPT can write a layoff memo InsiderThat wasn't the answer I'd expected, but in some ways it made me feel somewhat better about the technology. Maybe I should have accepted the technology's initial reluctance to write the layoff memo.
Insider "spoke" to bots acting as Princess Diana, Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Stalin, and Fred Trump. AI 'Fred Trump,' Donald Trump's father, isn't impressed with his son's politics. But AI Fred Trump "said" that he's "very proud" of his son, describing him as a "successful businessperson" and an "amazing father." An AI chatbot acting as Fred Trump, Donald Trump's father. AI Stalin called for the two countries to "find a peaceful solution."
Without Consciousness, AIs Will Be Sociopaths

ChatGPT, the latest technological sensation, is an artificial intelligence chatbot with an amazing ability to carry on a conversation. It relies on a massive network of artificial neurons that loosely mimics the human brain, and it has been trained by analyzing the information resources of the internet. My teenage son recently used ChatGPT to argue about politics with an imitation Karl Marx. As a neuroscientist specializing in the brain mechanisms of consciousness, I find talking to chatbots an unsettling experience. But given the rate of technological improvement, will they be in the next couple of years?
Bill Gates said artificial intelligence is "quite revolutionary" in his annual Reddit AMA session. Gates replied: "AI is the big one. I don't think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary but AI is quite revolutionary." Gates appeared particularly keen about generative AI — that is artificial intelligence that can create content — saying "I am quite impressed with the rate of improvement in these AIs. Gates was responding to a Reddit user who asked for his views on generative AI and how he thinks it will impact he world.
A Princeton student built an app that aims to tell if essays were written by AIs like ChatGPT. The app analyzes text to see how randomly it is written, allowing it to detect if it was written by AI. The website hosting the app, built by Edward Tian, crashed due to high traffic. "Are high school teachers going to want students using ChatGPT to write their history essays? Tian added that he's planning to publish a paper with accuracy stats using student journalism articles as data, alongside Princeton's Natural Language Processing group.
She said that next year, a tech giant will buy an electronic medical records company. Missy Krasner, who oversaw several health efforts at Google and Amazon, predicts that a large technology firm will buy a mountain of patient medical records in 2023. EHR companies provide software that doctors use to store and analyze medical records and other kinds of patient data. The timing is right for big tech to make a play for patient dataThe timing may be right for a big tech company to buy its way into owning patient data. Tech companies have made seismic investments in this area.
Two "dark ships" were spotted near the Nord Stream leaks, a satellite data analysis firm says. It detected 25 ships near the leak sites, two of which had turned off their trackers, Wired's Matt Burgess reported. The International Maritime Organization mandates that ships with cargo of 330 tons or more, as well as passenger ships of any size, have to turn on their AIS trackers on international voyages. Javornicky's claims come as Western European nations continue to investigate the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines, which make up the largest network supplying natural gas from Russia to Europe. Several underwater explosions in late September ruptured the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea, but it's still unclear what — or who — is responsible for the damage.
Experts predict the web will be flooded with AI-generated content as the technology improves. Patel, who blogged about the experiment, reached the conclusion that Google had finally come for the robots and their AI-generated content. If Google did nothing, the majority of pages that people visit through Google search could one day feature content written only by AIs. Even if Google wants to down rank AI-generated content, the growing sophistication of the technology could make that hard to do. Of course, if Google does view AI as a major threat to search quality, it only has itself to blame.

Digital twins are used by businesses to run simulations and identify issues before they occur. Companies are using digital twins to stress-test their supply chains, Technology Review reported. Digital twins use data on social media, consumers, and global factors to run simulations. Digital twins are virtual representations of real-world objects or systems, such as global supply chains, that are used to run simulations and identify issues before they occur. MIT Data Science Lab Director David Simchi-Levi told Technology Review that an increasing number of companies are using this tool to stress-test their supply chains.
